The irony is that if you actually *do* invoke your 5th and 6th amendment rights when being questioned by the police, you could very well *avoid* spending 10 years in prison. 🙂 ______________________ 5th amendment: Right not to be forced testify against yourself. Also includes the right to remain silent, but _must be explicitly invoked. Salinas v. Texas_ (2013) 6th amendment: Right to the effectiveness assistance of counsel. Useful to invoke when in custody because iit cuts off police questioning until your lawyer is present. (Invoking the 5th amendment also stops questioning, but only temporarily -- they can start asking questions again after a sufficient passage of time. Invoking the 6th amendment shuts down the questioning completely until a lawyer is present.)
