YOU Should™ Buy the M4 iPad Pro, And Here's Why!

I've been rather grumpy about iPads in recent past, mainly because I've wanted them to be computer replacements. But when I look at them as a notebook/brain replacement this thing has really shocked me with how good it is.
So here's why I think its worth buying.

Just picked up my 11” iPad Pro 2024 256GB today. I purchased a device that was returned to the store in same condition as brand new in original packaging and full warranty. This saved me 230$ and it only had 3 charge cycles and the included charging cable was never used. I feel like it was a good deal.

Agreed with the 5G feature. I've been using cellular iPad models since 2018 and I can't go back to using Wifi-only models anymore. Having an always on, always active data connection anywhere and everywhere is such a game changer. I no longer worry about my hotspot connection randomly disconnecting, tearing through my phone's battery life and getting bombarded by 200 notifications all at once every time I connect my iPad through tethering. I remember having anxiety taking video calls through tethering because sometimes the connection would randomly weaken causing the feed to buffer, freeze and sometimes disconnect entirely. No such issue on iPads with dedicated cellular connection. My iPad now goes pretty much everywhere with me now unlike my previous Wifi only models which spent a lot of their time in drawers, having no charge and gathering dust.

I am still using my 11” M1 iPad Pro with 5G and it goes everywhere with me. I knew it would be useful but I didn’t realize just how useful. Never going back to WiFi only. Now if only we can get 5G on MacBooks! 🎉

This has been my rule in buying Ipads since I had the Ipad air 2. If something were to happen with my smartphone etc. lost , damaged. I still want cellular service on the go. Not having to worry about where you're at brings such freedom to be totally productive.

The number of people that have said ‘I don’t need cellular’ either don’t want to pay the additional upfront cost and/or the monthly data plan fee, but for me it’s worth the time saved with not having to re-establish a tethered connection or a flaky hotspot. Couldn’t possibly go back to a non cellular iPad now if only Apple would bring cellular to their MacBooks

All I’m going to say is the M4 11 is maybe the finest iPad ever. Beautiful screen, proper face time camera positioning and the snappiest chip ever! In defense of the keyboard, it’s built rock solid and like V1 has a very nice typing experience. It’s a little heavier set up than some other options, but not by any significant amount. With the 3 amigos it weighs in an about 2.25 lbs or around 1043 GR. I think the iPad fits a lot of use cases and work flows. End of the day I think it’s an iPad anyone would enjoy. Peace!

I had a 3rd gen iPad Air that was on its way out so updated to the 13” iPad Pro base level so 256 Gig. I’ve done so because as a guitarist I can get all of my music in the pad, and since the eyes are not what they used to be, the extra screen size makes it worth while with the additional brightness and clarity really being useful. The pencil allows me to change scores on the fly so it’s totally changing how I can operate. I travel a huge amount so having something that can breeze through other bits of entertainment is a major plus. Yes, it’s been expensive, but if I can maximise the use experience and continue to expand the ways I use it, then it’s been worthwhile. If no one needs the extra screen size, then I’d suggest the 11”, but having most of my magazines digital means the extra screen suits everything

I loved that you gushed about the notability app for like 60 seconds! I’ve been in a graduate program for the last 2.5 years and the notability app is literally the best piece of software on the planet. And it’s always been that useful. If you’re recording your professor and taking notes, you can click on one of your notes and it jumps to the audio that was happening when you took it. They had that before the searchable handwritten text which is more recent. But it’s so useful

I purchased the M4 IPad Pro 13 inch and I LOVE it! I use it as my main computer. I love that it has cellular so I can use it anywhere at anytime. For me, it’s a great laptop replacement. Again, for ME it works.

Currently using the 5th Gen iPad Mini, along with my iPhone 13 Mini and Apple Watch. The iPad Mini is the form factor that works for me - don't need anything MacBook or iPad Pro sized - so I'm waiting impatiently for the new one. Thanks for the content.

Love mine, although the keyboard is expensive I personally think it's the best experience, especially the new one vs 3rd party options. Personally, I run my business with just my iPad Pro. It's really that powerful. Spreadsheets, presentations, PDFs, signing docs, etc etc.

@@totemadept I like the fit, finish and feel of the keyboard. The multiple angles I can put the screen at, the key travel and feel is great, the trackpad to me is phenomenal, and the charging port allows me to charge via the keyboard while I use other peripherals via the iPad’s USB C port.

I think people going too hard on Apple, offering such a wonderful upgrade regarding the chip and the screen for almost the same price (because they upgraded the baseline storage) is a very welcome upgrade, if you think you can do the same with your M1 or M2 iPads thats because you are not supposed to upgrade every 2-3 years, those who should upgrade are owners of iPad pro 2018 or older, you will feel very satisfied when you upgrade every 5-6 years (the cycle at which Apple makes big changes in their devices) and yes i know the software is still incapable but that’s not Apple’s fault, iPads are not meant to run desktop OS but the App developers are way too lazy to upgrade their iOS apps with more features that put them on par with their desktop versions, i think Apple reached the peak in iPad OS and the upgrades to come will be minor and mostly for customization rather than functionality, Apps are what needs more functionality and if games developers are pushing desktop-grade games to iPad OS that means other software developers need to push desktop-grade apps to iPad OS.

I have the OG iPad Pro and pencil and use them constantly for notes and thinking on paper (Nebo, but I may just switch to Apple Notes). It is effortless to find notes I’m looking for. No more digging for the correct notepad. It’s also easier than finding notes in Windows or MacOS. Can’t wait to finally upgrade.

I love and greatly appreciate your analysis videos Gary. You share your anecdotes, overarching facts, and the ultimate verdict. There are several great points you make in advocating for the m4 iPad Pro, but as you said in a different video of yours last week or week before (I think it was best accessories for your iPad in 2024?) you said how the regular 11’ iPad does so much of the same functions with very similar functionality and seamlessness as the iPad pros and air models. For me as an elementary/middle school sped teacher and (in my free time cartoonist), there are amazing educational, note taking (I.e GoodNotes and notability), and the drawing apps (procreate & clip studio paint), work SO FREAKING WELL! I do use my iPad for sped lessons, note taking, and drawing; but I don’t need to upgrade. My 2018 11’ iPad Pro received all these updates (including stage manager), and overall, still runs very well. If I were to upgrade and continue using iPad as tablet and laptop replacement; it would be the “budget” 10.9/11’ iPad. Why pay more for essentially the same Apple tablet when the software is 90% the exact same. This m4 iPad Pro doesn’t have some hybrid mix of iPad os and Mac OS and can’t truly/fully utilize the hugely powerful m4 chip. Feels like an overspendhre waste. Great great review as always dude! I upgraded from a 12.9” M1 iPad Pro to the 11” M4 iPad Pro, I mainly used the M1 before for media and some light work but I found myself using the M4 a whole lot more for everything as a substitute instead of my MacBooks. Especially with the Magic Keyboard it’s perfect. Now I just wish Apple would give us a real OS instead of a gimped toy OS 😒😒 the file browser is still the biggest thing I hate about iPads.

Let me make it easy for you. If you have an M1 or better iPad Pro, no HUGE reason to upgrade. Full disclaimer, the OLED screen is a game changer and looks absolutely stunning. The mini LED screen on the iPad Pro m2 is gorgeous as well, but like 60vs120 hz refresh rate, once you experience the OLED there’s no going back.

I have an iPad Pro 11 inch M4 With nano textured glass. This iPad is definitely a laptop replacement. I really love this size compared to the 13 inch because of portability and ease of use. The OLED display is simply awesome. A lot of people don’t know it, but the M4 11 inch is actually 11.1 inch and it is a noticeable difference

Great video. One of the great things about the iPad is the modularity of it. I personally use and love the Magic Keyboard, for example, but you don’t like it and found other great alternative ways to utilize the device. I believe it’s best to label the iPad Pro as a “computer alternate.” While many users may be able to make the device their main computer, it’s not (currently) designed to replace a traditional laptop.

I agree with much of the video. I am back in school and do a fair bit of writing and taking notes with the pro pen is great. OLED is great, smaller size and less weight is a big difference from my previous ipad. I do wish they would have reduced the bezels further and make the device smaller and even lighter, but it does make a difference holding for longer times

I did the same thing, went from 13" m4 to 11" took a little bit to get used to the difference aspect ratio but playing games and browsing while on couch or bed is way roe portable now, its super hard to type on the digital keyboard on the 13" while holding it

I have the M2 iPad Pro 12.9 and I use it as my primary device. My use case for work: I use it as a mobile extension, but not a replacement for my MacBook Pro (I can only complete about 85% of my work tasks on the iPad). My use case for personal: I use it for about 98% of tasks, I rarely use my MacBook, but I don’t do video editing or anything like that. I would love to upgrade to the M4 iPad Pro simply for the size/form factor, but I can only justify it if I sell my M2…

Hey, I'm still grumpy about the iPad including the M4s. My ideal iPad would run MS 365 with VBA macros and full keyboard customization. It would have two great front cameras (the M4 cameras are crap). It would have the studio-quality mics with audio post-processing focus options. It would have cinematic video stabilization and ProRes LOG in the regular Camera app. It would have a clever, bug-free video editing app for fast in-and-out editing with support for the FreeLab LUT. (Final Cut and Lightroom are both buggy, and LR for iPad doesn't have a Calibration slider (magic)). Guess I'll have to be happy remaining grumpy, or stop waiting for Apple to make hot rod pads that work. Hey, my 2nd Gen 12.9 is still swell for music scores, but I can't sing fast enough to justify an M4.

I hadn't looked at the cellular option for so long, and I'm kind of meh on my Apple watch having it (monthly fee kind of sucks versus something like a data block). Seeing that you can just easily add plans in the actual Settings has me re-thinking on just springing for the cellular version so I have that flexibility. The magic keyboard is an overpriced pile though (you can't even put it in your lap or if you tap it too hard it tips over wtf), so I'd also be using my regular bluetooth Apple keyboard -- glad you brought that up!

I was thinking of getting a new iPad - after checking a lot I came to the fact that the ne AIR M2 with pencil pro will be PERFECT and 300$ cheaper than the M4 pro (both 11") I will wait if there a 11th gen with M1 will come, that would probably again 200$ cheaper. I dont need the POWER of an M4 or more than 256GB Storage or a better screen ... I put a matt very very thin screen protector on it anyway :-) a NON paperlike. That is also not need in my opinion.

Honestly I like pro… I’ve had the 2018 iPad Pro a12x, air 3-4, iPad 9, and still have the iPad mini 6 that I am typing on now. I also have IPhone XS Max, mini13 and MacBook m1 Pro 14 and found that I think the new iPad Pro is really normal needed. Right now I think my next purchase will most definitely be a new MacBook Air and run some virtual machine for both android or iOSand macOS to have the best of all worlds. iPad for me is great because without the keyboard it’s compact, but fall short on all desktop of macOS full apps. My MacBook Pro feel real big in situations but I can run iOS apps or android pretty smoothly, just without touch. And then I have my iPhone for everything else.

Nice vid but….i can d all of that on my iPad Air M1 chip and that iPad is perfect. The only difference between my air and the new pro is the slim case size and storage, otherwise I don’t need that M4 speed and storage since all my notes n data go to the cloud. Btw, I tried out the new IPad Pro in the store and the weight is not that noticeable really.

I gave up using my I think 5 year old ipad air quite awhile ago for written notes. Paper and pen and maybe alater rewrite to apple notes for stuff i want to keep. If I can even read what I wrote. Or even find the bits of paper. So this new thinner more power ipad that had a great screen and a pencil I can just squeeze to erase is a good deal for me. And if next fall it can clean up my handwriting some? Wow. Plus M4 for Lightroom and photoshop? I'll splurge and have it with me all the time. Thanks

I’m gonna agree with the case being too large even though I don’t have the appple one (i think it’s too expensive) the one I have is still too heavy and makes the experience of carrying it bothersome.

I like your videos so thank you. I’ve been running around Europe taking photos and videos and wanting to upload them for safety purposes and I have a feeling that overtime you will get frustrated. After a decade I have just bought a surface pro because of this. It certainly is powerful, but it doesn’t have pro apps so I still view it, unless you need the pen, as a consumption device… I think Apple have missed the boat due to their not wishing to hurt their MacBook sales but I would’ve gladly have both but now I find myself, and I can’t believe I’m saying this, potentially transitioning back to Windows, WT…

Most KZbinrs would recommend laptops seeing the best of best iPad is more expensive than similar laptops. The new iPad Air is £300 cheaper., And able to the Apple Pencil ✏️ pro. I agree with having a stand with the mac Magic Keyboard cos I got a magnetic powered stand and thing it’s a nice touch, feels a little table top computer 13 inch iPad Pro.

Wait for more snapdragon x elite tablets. It generation behind M4 but come close to M3. You can install Windows, ChromeOS(maybe), android based like lineage os, Linux desktop and some touch version like Plasma Mobile ,Gnome touch. It is freedom which Ipad will never do.

There's a reason why Surface Pro devices aren't really an iPad competitor -- Windows with tablet features is horrific. iPadOS strikes a solid balance, and always errs on the side of tablet usage as its primary focus. My Steam Deck makes great use of Linux under the hood, which is mostly transparent outside of installing software in Desktop mode -- never tried any of the Linux touch screen stuff outside of that. I gave up on Linux on the desktop like 15 years ago, just more enjoyable to use macOS for that perfect balance of *nix-like and beautiful UX experience.

I can't see any reason to get the m4 pro over the m2 air... my wife's m1 pro is already faster than anything she/i can do with an ipad, so what's the advantage of an even faster even faster processor?

Unfortunately I am old school. The iPad, and mobile only tablets generally feel like glorified digital notebooks, with extra functionalities. But for me, that seems insufficient. Hence why looking at your view of the Windows surface pro made more sense for me.

I like the MacBook Air M3 since it has better aspect ratio for content 16:10 but the pen is cool, probably best to buy both. I feel like for travel the 11 pro is better option if I don’t need a keyboard.

The only tablets that will be able to utilize the most recent OS 18 and the real release in the fall with its full AI integration are the 11-13 inch Pro or Pro Max with terabyte or two terabyts.❤

Full time photographer here going around Europe for different festivals and performance art. I usually leave my 16 inch Max:ed out at home and only bring my iPad Pro M2 12.9. It’s amazing, it’s burning through thousands of high resolution/big files photos without any lag in Lightroom. But the file handling, import and export is so slow. Sure, it gives me time to drink beer but also gets me more stressed. Anyone know if they improved this with M4 version? I just love to edit on my iPad, but getting to impatient for all the other parts.
