I have been watching Tony and Chelsea for several years now and looking back, I didn't realize that they never accepted promotional sponsorships, but they have always said what I needed to hear when selecting gear and after buying them, I felt like what they said was right. That's not quite right. They take sponsorships all the time. They just don't take sponsorships from camera makers. That's Canon, Sony and the like. They do take sponsorships for camera adjacent fields, like website and used camera stores.

Very refreshing to hear someone advocate learning how to max out the cell phone before even thinking about a camera. In my travels I have seen too many examples of people purchasing more than they really needed, facing buyer’s remorse. If you start with your cell, you’ll quickly determine what you ‘feel’ you’re missing - and what you should consider if you move forward with a camera decision. I don’t know how many times I have told someone that a good point and shoot is all they need….and to forget shelling out thousands just to post pix on social media. Good job Tony, and thanks for your honesty.

I had a first generation Canon 70-200 F2.8 IS laying around. I recently paired it to a used $350 Canon T6 and started taking photos of hummingbirds in front of my kitchen window. The results absolutely blew me away. Lesson: it's the lens that counts - although I wish I had faster autofocus 😊.

Best time ever spent, I learned more from this couple then I did with 4 years for my BFA in Photography and Digital Imaging from Ringling School of Art and Design, graduated May 2007. I appreciated everything I did learn beyond photography at this school, it completely reshaped how I see, observe, and imagine a image in context and it’s development, but for actual photography knowledge this couple is the best. Back in 2014 when I started watching your channel, based on your reviews back then (among some other channels too), I bought the Canon 700D with two kit lenses. The results that I’ve got out of it, made me extremely happy! Until then, the best camera that I owned was a super zoom one, and the difference in quality between the two was day and night! I upgraded to better camera bodies and lenses (80D, 5D Mark IV, 90D and a bunch of Sigma, Tamron and Canon lenses), when my skills improved to the point that the camera was the bottleneck in creativity. Thank you for all the advices that you gave us all these years, and for the effort you and Chelsea both put for making all your videos!

Too many comments to see if anybody has already mentioned it, but if on a very tight budget, but willing to learn photography, a used Nikon D90 is a dirt cheap but quite able camera. Paired with second hand, third party, F1,8-f2,8 lenses you will get the results your smartphone just can't give you. Have a much, much better camera nowadays, but still keep it charged and pick it up every once in a while for a random family photo. One of the most underestimated cameras of all time imho.

RP is slept on. It's such a great camera that forces you to get good. But when you use it right, the pictures it gives you make it worth it and it's very rewarding. I upgraded to a A7IV, but the RP is a great backup.
@harrison00xXx2 жыл бұрын
I had the RP for about 2 years, my first and for a while my last full frame camera. Yeah, it was great and i enjoyed it for all things i did, especially with RF 50mm 1.8 prime and a 50 and 100mm 2.8 Macro lens, but as soon i was interested more in wildlife and video, i realized HOW BAD the RP can be. The thing which lead me to keeping it for so long... weight and size! Rarely i hated the small and short lasting battery, but mostly i loved how small and light the RP was! Im now a happy R7 owner and as much i miss the full frame glory now, more often than not i can take advantage of the crop anyways and also for example the EF-S 17-55 2.8 IS USM lens is GREAT and super light, even smaller and lighter than a full frame 24-70 F4L, just little bit worse IQ and more disortion in the corners but absolutely worth it (and better in low light than the RP + F4 lens was) I dont regret using FF for a while, aswell that im back to APS-C again, in fact some things like astrophotography, super low light, ISO 50.000 video etc im now much more limited with the R7 than i was with the RP but it gives so much more back: sharper images, fast speed, great autofocus for wildlife, 120 fps video, nice 4k60 crop video, very high quality downsampled 4k from 7k, good IBIS even with adapted lenses (as long they are canon, 3rd party with IBIS make sometimes HUGE troubles)

For wildlife, for $4400 I'd much rather have the Canon R7 + 100-500 L lens. You get more reach, better subject detection, higher framerate, better IBIS than the A7IV, a lighter, smaller lens with great MFD/max magnification if you're also into shooting insects. Only disadvantage would be high ISO performance, but noise is so easy to deal with in post nowdays that it's not a major issue.

Nikon Z5 for $999 new. On sale now. I just regret I didn’t purchase it for the same price this time last year, or the year before. For general purpose stills/video (not 4K because it has a large crop), such a great value that Canon and Sony still don’t match at this price now. Sensor is still great and IBIS works great, and I find the autofocus sufficient for anything other than maybe professional sports/wildlife. Though it worked fine for casual Thanksgiving family football game with new 24-120! For wildlife, I prefer APS-C so I still use a Nikon D7500 with Tamron 100-400 for that.

Pretty solid advice. Hard to get much more real significant benefit once breaching $5-6k as diminishing returns kick in. I have 'loadsa kit' but I shoot a lot and it's one of my main life hobbies plus I can afford it, so that's justification enough for me. Each to their own.

as an amateur photographer who isn't a full time professional but still takes the hobby seriously and does paid photography work, i would sincerely suggest to anyone watching this video to go learn more about lenses. the lens that you use on your camera matters significantly more to what the final image looks like than your camera body does. sadly, cannon is pulling third party lens support from their new RF lens mount. there are still a ton of lower budget lens options that can be adapted onto their mirrorless cameras, but those lenses are older, and worse in nearly every way. by contrast, there is a plethora of sony e-mount and nikon z-mount lenses from third party lensmakers which produce better images for less money, fill niche lens needs, and overall spark competition and provide modern lens options for these systems. this is something cannon cameras are no longer going to have moving forward, and anyone who buys an RF mount camera will be stuck using the lenses and paying the prices that cannon wants them too. which is often hard to stomach given the price to performance ratio of their in-house lenses. :(

Disappointing that you did not mention any of the Nikon mirrorless. While the Canon R5 is better for focusing with wildlife and and better for video (I think), the Nikon Z 7II is excellent for landscapes and general shooting and a lot cheaper with a better selection of telephotos than Canon. Similar situation with the R6 II and Z 6II. Nikon is being written off because because their focus system is not quite up to Canon and Sony. And no, I still use a Canon 6D with EF lenses. The camera has a dumbed-down focus system but I have gotten excellent results. There is no doubt that I would get satisfying images with either Sony, Canon, or Nikon, but I do think you are not giving Nikon a fair shake.

I was also looking for validation after purchasing my Z9. My preference is street and landscape photography. Unfortunately, I buy Nikon primarily due to fulfilling my early photgraphy years (70’s and 80’s) dreams of owning a Nikon. I watch Tony and Chelsea for thier knowledge, skill, and evaluation of cameras across the photography spectrum. They research, test, and use everything they talk about. As a result, they report honestly the results they experience….good or bad. I always enjoy seeing the differences, strengths and weaknesses of all the platforms they encounter, even if Nikon is not being unanimously hailed as the grail of cameras all the time😊. If the Z was not mentioned, I would hazard to guess, that it was not a recomendation due to other cameras filling the bill better for those niche photography areas. At least in Tony’s opinion. Of course, that is the key here. An opinion still allows us to be correct in our own opinion, even when it is in contrast to someone elses.

For the most part, I don’t see much difference between the image quality. It’s not a that I don’t doubt there are differences, it’s that realistically, I don’t spend that much time obsessing over image quality differences. That may come with time, but even though I said that, I would point out that there are a number of professional photographers use in Fuji equipment. You want to blow a equipment, be my quest. You want to learn the basics of all the variables in realm of photography, Fuji certainly gets one started and provides a depth of exploration that just not possible on other camera systems. Two years ago, I decided to find myself a hobby and buy my first ever camera. Fortunately for me, a friend was selling his Canon 60d in a near mint condition. For around 400USD I got the body and Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 VC. This year I purchased a used Canon 55-250mm f4-5.6 for around 150$. To be honest, even though the camera is quite old, I'm so happy with the photos I take with it. With the lenses I've got, I can take a huge range of different pictures, from portraits (which I'm definitely not good at) to wildlife. The only thing which the camera is bad at is low light photos, as iso1600 is very noisy. Still, I think that was a pretty nice deal for about a half the price of a new flagship phone. By the way, Stunning Digital Photography as a book is something incredible. All the knowledge, examples, videos... I really learned a lot from it. I've done side by side comparisons of the R5 and R6 taking landscapes with the 15-35 RF lens. I upscaled the R6 files to 45 MP and honestly, even when zoomed in to 100% , it's hard to tell a difference. If you use Adobe Camera Raw enhance then the R6 files always looks better (especially for portraits) at 45 MP. Resolution seems to be overrrated, at least when you go over 20 MP to about 60 MP.

My recommendation for begginners is always ZV-E10 for the price and for the quality. It will make you happy for years and when you learned the technique and start to make some money with it you can buy a Full Frame camera.

Thanks for the video! I found the R6 plus lens combo to be closer to $2250 in reality, which is nearly $200 cheaper than what you said in the video. Perhaps this is an important difference for some, as you could get the RF 50 1.8 or 16 2.8 for those 200 saved dollars.

A7iv for sports too...? Well, if you accept no more than 30 % of sharp pictures for people running straight. I'm bitterly disappointed by the A7iv for this use. I'm surprised to see it mentioned for wildlife but I can confirm it does a great job for portrait or landscape.

Hi With a budget of $1700 I am seeing a lot of cameras. I want new technology but seems like they are already 3 years old . My concern is buying one of these and a 2023 brings out new processors. I been using rx100ii then rx100 v. What is weatherproof, compact, great for filming grandson swimming, kicking soccer ball and recording especially on the beach where sand is always my fear?. I shoot raw and would like 4k for youtube upload and 1080p for dvd architecture rendering usually less then 50 meters. Thanks kevin

I shoot concert photography with an older DSLR Canon 6D for online reviews. I wish to upgrade to a more modern mirrorless camera. What camera should I buy? Was thinking maybe the Canon R6 mark 2 because I can but an adapter to use my EF lenses? Or I was thinking starting all over with the sony a74? Or ate these both wrong & I should consider a different camera for concert photography? Is a new phone all I need for concert photography? Why aren't mirrorless camera more like smart phones where you can eddit and post immediately on socisl media?

I agree, a dedicated camera makes sense if you are willing to invest time to learn. Also, good camera suggestions. I've forwarded this video for a couple of friends looking for camera this Christmas season. Also, for landscape and studio, I'd recommend the GFX 100s, or the GFX 50s mark ii as the specialty cameras.

So glad you gave positive reviews of the RP. It was all I could afford and I had to buy an adapter to use my EF lens. I got lucky on eBay and have a Canon 85/1.8 and a Tamron 28-75/2.8. Both in great condition. Really wish I had more variety, but it’s not possible in my budget. However I love my setup, if it is lacking, then I’m unaware because I’m accustomed to what I have. I do both portraiture and still life in my little makeshift studio.

Why no R7 in the sports section? You did some videos touting that one. Considering that raw burst pre-shooting can only use the electronic shutter, and the severe rolling shutter when using the electronic shutter, that pre-shooting feature is only useful in a few cases... once you pan it's all over. But you'll get a little more out of your buffer, at least, it seems? I wish the Sony a1 and a7 line had pre-shooting. (And the R3, R5, R6...) I'm new and lack experience though, still deciding what I want to get. Found you guys a couple weeks ago - great source of information, thank you.

I was wondering this as well, why no mention of the R7 for its price?
@kurasoe2 жыл бұрын
@@nafyah_media the R10 does most of the same. Slower electronic shutter but, with the rolling shutter craziness, it may not matter enough for an extra 30% speed. Otherwise they seem pretty similar. I do think there's a decent bit of difference with the R7's buffer. Nothing gigantic but certainly noticeable. I believe there's a slight mp difference too which may help with crop. I need better low light with indoor volleyball but I don't know that I can afford it. Also with the R6, Mk II is coming really soon I believe so might want to wait if you're thinking that and get something a little better or snag used once market adjusts. Even with the R6 upgrade it's still not fantastic. No 2 grand plus camera should be cheaping out on non cfexpress card slots honestly. Smh

@VenomIIID2 жыл бұрын
I believe A7iv has better animal eye tracking algorithms.
@chriscrowell66782 жыл бұрын
@@VenomIIID I own the 7RIV and the 7IV I picked up the IV for the better video capability and because I dont always need the R's 61mp plus a second body is a must if ever doing weddings etc, so it made sense at the time. both have had firmware updates and in real world I actually find them about the same for the eye tracking if anything I find the R tracks faster however the R doesnt have specifically "bird" eye tracking in the menu ??? just human / animal vs human / animal / bird. I do like The Sony, shot canon for years but Sony was leaps ahead in mirrorless ( still are really ) and canon switched to the Rf lens when they released the R and RP so mirrorless meant replacing the glass either way. I would like to keep one of The Sony as my main body and sell the other to pick up the Canon R5 and just limit my RF lens to one or two.

I went to Botswana last year with a Nikon D7500 and a Sigma 120-600 f5/6.3 lens. Took some fabulous images too. My wife used a borrowed D90 and a kit zoom lens. The results were not the top. So I followed your advice and for this year's Kenya visit, I have added a D780 and a Nikon 70-200 f2.8. Can't wait to use them in Kenya. Probably because with the 18-135 EF-S, you have a better walk-around lens, you don't have to lose shots while switching out lenses, plus it will get most shots you'll want, only losing the higher 65mm of range.

Thanks for your insights Tony. I thoroughly enjoy my Canon R5 for the real estate and commercial work I do. It is my day to day work horse, so solid and dependable. As a backup I use the Panasonic Lumix G9. It is very well laid out, well balanced in the hand and the weight difference between that and full frame is amazing. It is a joy to shoot with and it is my go to camera when walking about and especially hiking. It has had lots of firmware upgrades and for video is almost a mini GH5, and for a camera with so many features it seems a good price even new. From my experience I can earnestly recommend both the R5 and G9. Again Tony, thanks for helping us know some of those options... there really are so many good cameras out there.

Agreed! I have a r5c, mostly for the ability to record in codecs that can easily match other cameras we use in a video production. But I primarily do photography. And the r5(c) never disappoints, it’s really good in low light high iso environments and is tack sharp even with old ef glass on a ef-rf adapter. Impressive highlight recovery and shadows too. Skin tones are excellent, use the 70-200 rf 2.8 and it’s amazing. Have the super old 24-105 but it’s so sharp I love it😂 also have a 17-40 for real estate and it’s great. Tony, it all depends, what you'd like todo, nowadays. You can even make landscape photography perfectly with (just) 10 or 12 MP gear, its only that you won't print that big, -huge hereby. But even for an A3 print size, it's perfectly fine, it's all about viewing distance. One usually doesn't rub the nose onto a gallery print on the wall. 🙂 And then, there's still that Adobe ACR "super resolution" feature to upscale the MP, in case it's being needed. Old gear isn't obsolete - but the industry wants to tell you that, because otherwise they don't sell anything new.
