This is interesting because with the usual way, when adding a border to a finished article, you can be left with just a single strand that can pull out to quite a large hole. Will definitely do a couple of samplers to try this technique. Thank you for posting it.

For me, I would start my first row after this foundation chain by inserting my hook in the more lumpy stitch, rather than the smooth V stitches, so I could have the smooth V’s showing at the bottom/beginning of my crochet project. I do love the simplicity of your technique for the foundation row. Thank you for posting.

I do like the look of this foundation chain except I agree with you on the doing the first row in the lumpy stitch. It would cover up the lumpy and leave it looking cleaner

i think i need to learn this new technique - well it is new to me at least - but what i really like about it is the edging. There isn't left behind huge gaps after finishing the foundation row in the foundation chain like the most common chaining the crocheters know about. It looks like it is more solid to work with as well. That is a big bonus when handling limp flimsy yarn. This new chaining technique looks like it still leave optional room to include a trim or border as well - unlike working the foundation row in the spine of the original foundation chain. This looks to me like a big game changer. Kudos and ty for sharing this. :)

If you do a regular knit cast on and add the crochet stich like here, the bottom comes out very smooth. Its super nice for amigrumi stitch around a chain bc you dont get the single chain separation.
@amydavis49458 ай бұрын
Although this is an interesting sort of "knitting cast on", I'm not fond of the way it makes the bottom of the foundation appear. That's just my opinion. I'll stick to the "normal" chain, and working in the back "hump" for my first row for a nice clean bottom edge.
@troberts18 ай бұрын
I think this should be pushed as a stretchy foundation chain, because that's its primary attribute. (I just did a little testing.) But I agree, this gives you the less attractive side of the chain. It's also incredibly slow and awkward to do, since you have to reposition the yarn twice for every stitch. Definitely not worth the result, especially since a different yarn and a looser gauge will look even worse. Oh and in knitting, that's called the 'backwards loop cast on' and is basically the most inferior cast on that exists. 😆
@sunnycherrysea88008 ай бұрын
@@troberts1, если в видео показан самый плохой набор из существующих, то какой же самый хороший? 🤔
@misselanys12198 ай бұрын
I think working a regular chain method and the back bumps makes the foundation row too bulky. By the same token this new method in the vid here is awkward I completely agree with you. I use the normal chain method working into the front of the loop which is perfectly fine fast and neat and that is my personal goal accomplished. You guys do it your way though. Whatever works
@misselanys12198 ай бұрын
@@troberts1But this isnt knitting. The fact that the backwards loop she is doing is reinforced with the sc makes it less flimsy. Also need I remind you that most knitted sweater patterns call for the backwards thumb method to cast on the extra underarm stitches in sleeve working - the most important stitches in a sweater which bear the most stress and strain so I would not call it "inferior🤣" . I just thought that extra laughing emoji was unnecessary meangirl action
@amydavis49458 ай бұрын
@@misselanys1219 "Whatever works" - exactly! Just like this video and this technique, the way I do my foundation row is just the way I do it. This video suggests another way, and you do it your way. None of these is "right" or "wrong" as long as the person doing it is happy with their work!

This appears to be a crocheted I-cord. You can start or end a project with this and it gives a nice finished edge to your work. It is not a true foundation chain because it creates a second set of chain stitches, and will look different. You can definitely use this in place of the normal chain, just know that there IS a difference. And if you have a pattern that uses both the starting chain AND at some point, the I-cord, there is a specific reason for it, so they may not always be interchangeable. Good tutorial though!

@AmyAllen-v5r7 ай бұрын
Sometimes a pattern calls for making the foundation a row of single crochet instead of chains. This leaves a pretty edge. I use it when making clothes or anything I don't plan on putting an edge on.. Or if I am doing something that I want to use only one strand for the edging. This way of making the foundation single crochet will be much simpler and stronger. Just FYI 😊
