WOW!!!! So PAMS weren't the only production company in circulation! Man, as a musician I really DIG the punctuation and escalation of the music when it first comes on. (Especially the bass line😉) I liked the variations that 'characterized' each station. WFYR was clever, I don't recall hearing "YOU" on Jack fm when I was in Dallas nor did I remember it on WFIL. I so enjoyed this, thank you Mr. Feaster!👍💥🤜🤛🔥👏👏👏

The whole "You" package was re-sung for UK radio station Beacon Radio in 1977. At the time the regulator forbid American jingles on commercial radio stations so the MD of Beacon, Jay Oliver, who was an American apparently flew TM singers over to London and had them sing on re-orchestrated beds. The result was phenomenal and the package for the station was fantastic. The strapline "We do it for you" fitted perfectly just before the station name, "on Beacon 303". They can be found online in various places if you look hard enough.

Almost sounds like SCTV sketch when Dave Thomas impersonated Richard Harris performing "MacArthur Park" with its instrumental interlude extended way beyond its actual length, turning it into a disco song.

The amount of Canadian stations using this package is neat. Here in Lil' ol' Pittsburgh, PA I used to try to "log" as many Canadian AM (and FM!) stations as I could. I mean getting WLS out of Chicago or WSB out of Atlanta was cool and all, but a Canadian station (even if it was actually CLOSER) was better as it was international! (I spent many hours listening to CKLW in the '70s!) Then I got an actual shortwave radio and got a "hoot" out of Soviet blok English language propaganda stations. (I regret not recording those Cold War "gems").

When I was a young tyke, I thought, "WOW these jingles must have been custom made for WHBQ" (Memphis). Of course, WHBQ was part of the RKO chain and got their version of the package like the other RKO stations did, but the call letters worked so well with this particular package that it wasn't an unreasonable thought for a 12 year old :). Everybody has a favorite memory of hearing the "You" package on their hometown radio station, but (showing my bias here) the package sounded particularly good with WHBQ since the 'Q' in the call letters rhymed perfectly with 'You'. "We do it for youuuuu at WHBQ!"... "We play it for youuuuu on WHBQ!" It doesn't get any better than that! I'm kinda partial also to the way "Memphis" sounds on the Legal ID. On some TOH jingles the cities almost sound like they have to be "crammed" in. "Memphis" has got to be one of the easiest cities to sing. Ironically, John Long, the PD at the time the jingles were in use, did not like the jingles and only used the TOH and a select few of the shotguns and shorter jingles. (He mentioned this in his online radio biography at oidar.com, which sadly has been down for many years.) Many elements of the "You" package were not used regularly. On rare occasions one of the jingle songs would be used but they did not air frequently. The "You" package - my all time favorite.

An impressive montage. If my memory serves me right, I think Firstcom had a TOH jingle that sounds almost exactly like the one from the "You" package. I believe it was for their KIIS '88 package for KIIS-FM. They must have liked it so much that it was used for two more packages, "KIIS '89" and "Fast Break" (the latter for KFMB-FM San Diego).

When did radio stations stop using their call letters and switch to boring monikers like “Mix 96?” Call letters were a distinctive marketing tool for stations which had long local histories and loyal listeners, and TM’s jingle packages in the 70s and 80s especially defined and enhanced their sound and flow.
@ApartmentKing66
@ApartmentKing66 2 жыл бұрын
I think Z93 in Atlanta was the station that started that. I'm with you...call letters are king. Call letters are the one thing a station has that NO ONE else does.
@EllisFeaster

It seems like names for radio stations, instead of Call letters, or even single letter/frequency combinations, started in the late 70s with FM stations like Kiss 108 Boston & Magic 103 Philadelphia. But by the early 1980s, it really took off with stations like Power 99 Philly, Joy 108 Orlando, & 98.7 Kiss in New York.
@donmccullen1973
@donmccullen1973 2 ай бұрын
@EllisFeaster I prefer names myself. Not every country uses a call sign. Most stations in Europe have call signs that are the radio station name. Australia calls use letters and numbers. Mexico calls begin with XH or XR. Canada start with C. Japan starts with J.
