Solo Leveling Episode 9
"You've Been Hiding Your Skills"
Kang shows his true colors and gives an insightful philosophy lecture. Has Jinwoo gazed into the abyss long enough to overcome this foe? How much longer can his humanity survive on this path?

Thanks for putting out these videos so quickly! I'm really looking forward to seeing you both react to ep 11 and 12 when you are finally caught up to each other. And major props to Kim for holding off on watching the final two episodes so that you can enjoy them together, and so that we viewers can share in that experience. One of the things that others pointed out to me about this episode is that Sung is basically looking at what he might become when he is facing off against Kang. So the "staring into the abyss" comment actually has an important dual meaning, which is made very apparent in the way the scene is framed as Kang is slowly dying. It's like there's a mirror set up between the two of them (and this also happens shortly after the imagery of broken glass was established with Sung looking shattered, which is such incredible visual storytelling). Sung and Kang share a lot of remarkable similarities to each other, in that they are both assassin builds, they've both killed human beings, and they're both keeping powerful secrets from others about their hunter skills. So it's like Sung is staring at a future evil version of himself as he watches Kang die. Of course that's only _if_ he keeps growing distant from people and loses touch with his humanity, which is what he worries he is doing. But this arc really establishes the dangerous path that Sung is going down, and what may await him in those "dark places". Kang's evil reveal is honestly one I did _not_ see coming. At all. I was certain for the longest time he was going to set the prisoners on the rest of the team to test Sung's strength. But once again Solo Leveling shows us its genius at misleading the audience. Instead of that fairly simple storyline we get an awesome life-and-death fight that unveils cool new skills, combined with great worldbuilding showing us how the Hunter's Association fits into the larger world outside (we learn that they are basically overworked bureaucrats, which is how Kang was able to hide himself among them for so long), plus we see the corruption in the legal system that lets hunters who are criminals basically get away with horrible crimes just because clearing the gates is so important, as well as establishing the idea that finding enough hunters to keep up with the number of gates appearing every day is difficult, and lastly we see that Mr Song and Joohee are true friends that Sung can trust with his life. Wow, this episode honestly really blew me away when I first watched it, especially after I thought there was no possible way episode 6 could be topped. I'm sure you both realize it by now, but Solo Leveling really has some exceptional storytelling at many different levels.

The manwha plays this scene even crazier - after he kills Kang and sends his 2 mates out of the dungeon - Jinwoo notices one of the rapists is pretending to be dead and then drags the rapist with him into the boss dungeon and forces the rapist to fight the boss while Jinwoo just watches the rapist get eviscerated, basically saying "im not going to let trash like you survive..." no idea why they cut it out, it speaks volumes to Jinwoo starting to become a more like a brutal avenging angel - who saves the weak and does good things but really becomes this deadly punisher of evil... and I'm absolutely hear for it all. Kill or be killed, you have to be strong to survive world, its me or them.

From my reading of the manwha I remember Jinwoo acting fairly different in that moment. He just remarked that the man's injuries were probably going to kill him without Joohee's healing, and then dragged him to the boss chamber, saying he was worse than Kang and that he wouldn't let a monster like him loose outside. Now this may seem like an "avenging angel" to you, but to me Jinwoo acts fairly cold and calculating through it all. I actually assumed the real reason he killed the convict wasn't because of a thirst for vengeance, but simply because the man had witnessed Jinwoo's abilities, and he couldn't be trusted to keep that secret. Sung just acts so detached through it all that it was hard to see him as being upset if anyone died, even if it was innocents at the hands of a pardoned criminal. Regardless, I tend to think that the anime leaving that scene out is the better choice. The incident is definitely superfluous, since we just witnessed Jinwoo kill Kang without any emotion or hesitation whatsoever. So repeating those same story beats immediately after comes across as trying too hard to be "edgy" (which the story is definitely guilty of at times).

@@RoryMitchell00 In the light novel, there was only one rapist - the other criminals, along with the hunters, were collateral - and Kang Taeshik was saving his true target for last, because he'd been paid to make it painful. The target saw nothing, thought that Kang might still be around, but a short conversation revealed to Jin-Woo that the man was not only unrepentant but was also a serial rapist, which is what prompted Jin-Woo to toss the criminal, still bound, to the hobgoblins. Leaving out this scene saves Jin-Woo's character, as it was out of character for Jin-Woo to kill someone without the system prompting him.

@@leonielson7138 Interesting info about the light novel. In the manhua I remember it being all three who were the rapists. The last one had his vocal chords cut and was only pretending to be dead, so it was all a monologue by Jinwoo. Yeah, it does create a bit of an out-of-character moment for Jinwoo. Though I would argue that he had a consistent motivation around keeping his abilities a secret, which could definitely come into play at that time.

The REAL important question is this; will the anime cover the epilogue chapters? there is a massive twist about this episode in those chapters.

As far as Jin-Woo's level goes, he's high B-rank, but his skills put him at a low A-Rank, as evidenced by how he was able to take out Kang Taeshik once he put all his skills to use. The problem is that Woo Jinchul is at the top of the A-Ranking (if this was 'One-Punch Man', he'd be the one that heroes had to go through to become S-Rank).

10:08 Second Awakenings felt like they were added for the convenience of the story, then the rich kid just knows he's not one, and adds "I've heard rumors of false rankers" just so he's scared of him. But now Kang KNOWS he's not one, because "they don't leave any witnesses alive". I love this show, but the writing is inconsistent even for a Shonen.
