Honestly, I’ve been feeling completely overwhelmed by the flood of information out there, but Simplicity Through Simulation: The Algorithm of Humanity by Karl K. Dondaneau changed that for me. It’s like everything clicked-this book blends quantum mechanics, psychology, and mathematics in a way that actually makes sense of the chaos we’re all swimming in. It’s already starting to shift how I see reality, giving me a framework to understand things on a deeper level. If you’re craving something meaningful that cuts through the noise, this might be the book that does it. I can’t recommend it enough. It's on Amazon….

I will say that I am not bilingual, but I have my associates in Spanish. Concepts like humor and joy were amplified in Spanish literature. Irony was so much more delicious. The way I thought about the world in Spanish was forced to shift because words and grammar do not cleanly translate, and thus so did my view of myself relative to the world. What I will say is that movements in literature usually are for a single language. Thus, although there are quite a few exceptions for philosophy I’ve learned about (knowledge of French during the Enlightenment, knowledge of English, Latin, and Greek for Nietzsche and so many other philosophers, some pieces of knowledge of Eastern philosophy in general), this doesn’t change that philosophical and ideological frameworks are often being shaped by people of their own native tongue, even if the origin is a different language. This means that writing styles, archetypes, and formats for stories themselves are also different. It has been too long, but movements in Spanish fiction often has very little overlap with English concepts, although first-of-its-kind literature inspired by Enlightenment and 19th century concepts seem to typically hit Spanish literature in full force a few decades later. There are many genres of fiction that simply do not exist in English and I found nearly all of them more rhetorically interesting and profound than anything I’ve read in my English classes. I’m not sure I have much more to go from here, really from lack of deeper study and rusty memory, but it was all very intriguing with intermediate level reading skills, I just suck at learning language and moved on to other pastures for now. Just wanted to back up my personal experiences corroborate with a lot of what the video says about the experience of knowing another language, and add to it.

How interesting the relationships between languages and time . Do you know that when we look into the Greek language that has given us so much in all aspects of life we find that they don’t have any specific word for “time” as of the English. What they do have and use are “ lepto for minute “ - “ Orra for hour “ - “Merra for day” - “Minous for month” of course “Cronus for year” and that’s it no word for time?? To me that implies time is an individual measurement of experiences of oneself or as to say the “Ego” which is a representation of “Me” in the Greek language

The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, also known as the linguistic relativity hypothesis, is the theory that the language a person speaks influences how they think about the world. The hypothesis was developed by American linguists Edward Sapir (1884-1939) and his student Benjamin Lee Whorf (1897-1941).

Great video. But language is there to paint pictures of reality in your mind. If language is abstract it leads to frustration. Word must be clear precise and accurate to describe anything you hold in your perception. The better you understand words, the clearer they are in your perception. It's also important to understand how logic builds sentences to clear mental visions of ideas and concepts. All ideas and concepts must be empirically tied to the real word for them to be expressed for others to understand. Any sort of speculations, general, abstract rhetoric will only create frustration.

There's a very small culture in the Amazon, I forgot the name of the people. A Christian anthropologist visited them to try to convert them (iirc), but their language only dealt with the ohysical/tangible. No abstractions. No words for numbers, and presumably no words to allow a foundation for conceptual thought to manifest through which made some think they weren't able to grasp abstract thinking. They wanted to learn numbers to ensure they weren't being scammed by those trading with them

hmmmm, this is thought provoking. An easy example I want to point out is how in Greek, they differentiate between different kinds of beauty, and different kinds of love. In English, we don’t have that in the same way beyond contextuals: "familial love". This contributes to how messy our relationships and perspectives of others already are. You'd imagine it would be easier to find words for our complicated relationships if English gave the words out like candy.

@snowarmth, that’s a fascinating point! Language definitely shapes our perceptions, right? If we had those nuanced words, do you think it would actually make our relationships clearer, or could it complicate things further? Maybe the messiness is part of what makes connections so rich. I see it not as the sculpter, but as the toolset; and if all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail Now that's obviously oversimplified, because no language is THAT simple, but is paints the picture... From time to time one finds whole paragraphs in old books describing concepts what we now have singular words for, so the relativists can't be intirely correct, but having the (understanding of your) vocabullary to easily describe something, WILL equip you to graps it better

"The Duncan's sometimes ask if I understand the exotic ideas of our past? And if I understand them, why can't I explain them? Knowledge, rhe Duncan's believe, resides only in particulars. I try to tell them that all words are plastic. Word images begin to distort in the instance of utterance. Ideas embedded in a language require that particular language for expression. This is the very essence of the meaning within the word exotic. See how it begins to distort? Translation squirms in the presence of the exotic. The Galach which I speak here imposes itself. It is an outside frame of reference, a particular system. Dangers lurk in all systems. Systems incorporate the unexamined beliefs of their creators. Adopt a system, accept its beliefs, & you help strengthen the resistance to change. Does it serve any purpose for me to tell the Duncans that there are no languages for some things? Ahhh! But the Duncans believe that all languages are mine." [Leto II, God Emperor; Frank Herbert, God Emperor of Dune.] tavi.

Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis Universal human experiences transcend linguistic boundaries, revealing a profound commonality that supersedes cultural and linguistic diversity. Notably, children exhibit an extraordinary capacity for language acquisition, rapidly developing proficiency despite limited exposure to linguistic input. This phenomenon underscores the existence of an innate linguistic faculty, operating independently of cultural context, which facilitates the remarkable process of language development. Furthermore, the universality of logical and mathematical reasoning remains unaffected by linguistic variations, demonstrating the autonomous nature of these cognitive functions. While language undoubtedly exerts a profound influence on thought, it does not exert absolute determinism. Instead, linguistic structures subtly shape perception, imposing discernible yet surmountable constraints. In this context, language plays a pivotal role in molding thought patterns, yet its influence is tempered by the complex interplay of cognitive, cultural, and environmental factors. Consequently, linguistic relativity is tempered by the robustness of human cognition, which transcends the boundaries of language.

Good, yet imo unnecessary food for thought. Id like to say sticking to a common sense and having mind open, being flexible is a must :) Thoughts and language, both create reality. And it can go terribly wrong. Also some languages, slavic languages for instance have many words in common, but the meanings and the use of the words can be VERY different in all possible ways… I could keep elaborating.. unfortunately my language and thoughts are not aligned tonight..

The voice is memorable, tho' artificial, so I';m inclined as a human to identify it and now associate it with repellant opinions. I've been somewhat rankled by the abscence of real human announcers, having made a living at it once a long time ago. nevertheless I thought it might protect authors and otherwise neutralize peculiar pronunciations. But even tho' the robo voices are inhuman (we can tell by the mispronunciations (although in this case they're very rare) nevertheless I hear the same voice that spewed political tripe making points in an otherwise infomrtive and unbiased presentation. You may reconsider the fake voices since the veil of neutrality is stained with one bad post.
