It’s a common site in many parks and backyards: Crows squawking. But groups of the noisy black birds may not just be raising a fuss, scientists say. They may be holding a funeral.
Kaeli Swift, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Washington’s Avian Conservation Lab in Seattle, is studying how crows learn about danger from each other and how they respond to seeing one of their own who has died.
Unlike the majority of animals, crows react strongly to seeing a fellow member of their species has died, mobbing together and raising a ruckus.
Only a few animals like whales, elephants and some primates, have such strong reactions.
To study exactly what may be going on on, Swift developed an experiment that involved exposing local crows in Seattle neighborhoods to a dead taxidermied crow in order to study their reaction.
“It’s really incredible,” she said. “They’re all around in the trees just staring at you and screaming at you.”
Swift calls these events ‘crow funerals’ and they are the focus of her research.
--- What do crows eat?
Crows are omnivores so they’ll eat just about anything. In the wild they eat insects, carrion, eggs seeds and fruit. Crows that live around humans eat garbage.
--- What’s the difference between crows and ravens?
American crows and common ravens may look similar but ravens are larger with a more robust beak. When in flight, crow tail feathers are approximately the same length. Raven tail feathers spread out and look like a fan.
Ravens also tend to emit a croaking sound compared to the caw of a crow. Ravens also tend to travel in pairs while crows tend to flock together in larger groups. Raven will sometimes prey on crows.
--- Why do crows chase hawks?
Crows, like animals whose young are preyed upon, mob together and harass dangerous predators like hawks in order to exclude them from an area and protect their offspring. Mobbing also teaches new generations of crows to identify predators.

A crow was stuck in my grandma's chimney behind the flue. I got him out with gloves and a mirror and when I took him outside there were dozens of concerned crows making a ruckus. As soon at I let him go they all gathered around him in the same tree. It was very obvious they were concerned and quite intelligent.

I have seen a crow funeral. I feed the crows and have done so for many years so they always feel safe in my yard, the 30 tall trees doesn’t hurt either. Several years ago our cat had a very remarkable kitten, his name was Orion. He was black like the crows, and black like his mother. He was not allowed out but eventually he got out because he was a curious and spirited boy. One morning I woke up to find 100+ crows in the trees in my backyard all of them doing their Funeral cry. My heart sank because I could not find a Ryan and I had some inkling of what was going on, I walked outside I circled the block and they’re on the busy road way behind my house with my baby Orion he had died. The crows called me and told me that he had passed and they stayed for sometime. Sure he was black like them, but on some level I think they understood that he was my baby and they were sad on my behalf. I will never forget that morning or how it felt.

One afternoon I was at my house and heard a strange noise coming from outside. Eventually i noticed it was maybe 100 crows cawing loudly within a single tree. Eventually I saw a single crow fly in from the distance and land in the tree. In an instant the noise stopped and every single one of them took off together. Was one of the most incredible things I've ever seen. Such an organized effort just make sure a single member of their group didn't get left behind. They truly are remarkable creatures. Full of compassion and virtue.

Omg this is exactly what I observed a couple years ago. I went running one morning and I noticed a dead crow on the road. Soon I observed a couple of crows absolutely losing it. They were soon joined by many more crows and after a while everything went quiet and somber. It was then that I realized that I was actually a part of a crow funeral. RIP.

I've experienced it personally. I remember to have captured a crow and in the next 15 minutes all our compound was filled with hundreds of them chanting and trying to liberate their friend. They are highly and intelligently sociable.

Personal Anecdote: A few years ago, one of the black cats in my apartment complex killed a crow and after that the crows recognized her and would attack her (and only her) whenever she went outside. It always astounded me that they knew the difference between her and the other cats. Even the other black ones.

I witnessed a crow funeral, after one got zapped on the power line. It was very unnerving, as it started small but quickly grew to dozens or more and became very loud. Their sound actually got me out of my house to go see, whereupon I saw the dead crow and figured that's what the fuss was about. In the end it was a moving experience.

TIL conservatives think they're smart as crows. There's actual scientific studies that show conservative viewpoints are held by those with lower IQ and more cowardly/fearful personality traits. I wouldn't be surprised if a lack of self-awareness was also correlated with such viewpoints, but that's quite hard to measure.

You'll also notice that crows give a minor danger call for cats (seeing them as a small threat) but a much more pronounced danger call for humans, recognizing that we pose a much greater threat to their safety. It's like: "caw caw caw" when a cat is wandering through the yard and "CAW! CAW! CAW!" when a human steps outside. :)

@@taekwondotime That's not true at all. It's quite the opposite. Cats kill vastly more crows than humans do. Many humans often feed crows, and even humans who don't try to feed crows may leave behind trash that crows like, whether food they can eat or trinkets they can collect. Crows don't respond positively to seeing a cat, whose only interest in crows is to hunt them, but many crows will respond positively to seeing a human.

​@@Oiltuber Cats don't hunt crows. A crow is far too large for a cat. They're practically the same size. Crows DO make more noise when they see a human vs a cat because the human is the greater threat... especially when you encounter crows in places other than city parks. Want more proof? Crows will sit in a nearby tree and caw when there's a cat passing through. Those same crows won't even feel safe being in a tree when a human is present. They fly away.

A crow is not too large for a cat, and cats kill crows all the time. Crows are mostly indifferent to humans, and some will even approach humans for food, water, or trinkets. Crows caw when there's a cat passing through to warn each other because they know cats can be a threat to them.

When I was 5 or 6 years old, there was a deceased crow in my backyard and at least a hundred crows were flying in a circle in the sky above my backyard. It was such a surreal experience to see animal life mourning for another. I think that's when I begin to realize that animals are intelligent and have the emotional capacity to show empathy and compassion towards another living being. It was such a beautiful experience to witness as a young child at my home. I'll never forget it.

I threw a stone into a tree full of crows in my garden once, and ever since-for years and years after-they've been haranguing and scolding and cawing at me since. When someone else leaves or enters my bungalow and crosses my garden, they are quiet, but when they see me-even if it's down the street, approaching my home-they begin a ruckus, alarming and warning each other of my impending presence. The grey-necked Indian house crow remembers faces, for years even, and it even holds a grudge.

I was some 13 years old when I threw stones at Crow nest while visiting my uncles house for Short stay..... Then for next 1 months Crows daily attacked me. When I returned to my home some 40 kms away. Crows still attacked me even 5 years later. Now attacks are stopped

I read this curious finding about a raven in Alaska (I think it was Alaska) that would play dead by falling onto its back with it's legs up everytime one of it's own kind neared a carcass the raven had found. Ravens were a nuisance in the area and people had been poisoning carcasses to help kill off the birds. So the birds had learned to associate a dead raven by a carcass as food to stay away from. So one clever raven took advantage of that by pretending to be dead each time so it didnt have to compete over the food.

I had this experience with crows when I , along with my friend tried to rescue a not so grown up crow, recover from its fall from a tall tree( believe me when I say it was tall) . The moment we picked the bird up and put it on a pile of clothes or smth, a bunch of other crows gathered on the trees nearby and began doing their crow funeral stuff. God ,was it loud! I now have to think twice before helping another crow in need.

When I was a kid I used to scare the shit out of crows in my yard with sticks and rocks. Those crows had always remembered me and screamed crazy whenever they see me. Even their offsprings to this day still make noises when they see me in the yard, even though they haven’t seen me bothering them. They can pass down information from generation to generation and they also recognize human faces.

I have observed a crow funeral and walked into the middle of another funeral. Both were very quiet and respectful. The one I attended must have had at least 500 to 600 crows. Every one of them were silent for hours. Except 1 crow that was wailing. It sounded like the crow was weeping for their loved one. Still gives me the chills 12 years later.

When one of my pigeons died, her mate was very upset. He wouldn't leave her side as she was lying on the floor. He kept walking around and around her, looking at her from all angles. After I moved her, he was still wandering the area looking for her. They can be very intelligent but they are also prey animals, so in the wild they are too wary to linger in one spot and allow themselves to be distracted for long.

Darcey Mussey, I raised mostly white homers years ago and now I have pet chickens. My neighbors thought they were doves, which was the idea. Recently I told a friend it's too bad this hobby is gone since people are more interested in electronics. My only problem now is I don't eat chicken anymore but I don't fault anyone who does. I just can't do it.

Prey animals tend to be dumber than predators. Dolphins eat fish and even whales, remember, and humans hunt everything. Elephants are pretty much the only exception I think of a smart herbivore.

Saucy Doggo No they didn't It's that the crows that have seen her holding the dead crow associated her with danger and sounded the alarms when they saw her again When crows saw her again they sounded the alarm again which alerted new crows that she is danger making the sound themselves Now if one of them was miles away with another murder and it saw the mask again it will sound the alarm and new flock will be introduced to the danger

Awesome video! I witnessed something similar with ibis' where one had died in a lake and eels were starting to notice it. Other ibis' crowded the water's edge where it was and seemed genuinely disturbed. Animals are far more intelligent than most give them credit.
