I spent a year and a half or so working for an established "Performance Shop" turned Manufacturing company. I really enjoyed tearing down shitbox stratus engines and turning them into 600hp forged internal beasts. The people were rad. They were my people. The job itself could be monotonous, but hearing those builds hit the dyno and make big power was so rewarding. That said I couldn't make it a long term gig. The pay was not there, I took a huge pay hit to go do it, which left me at a net negative financially for that year and a half. We also had poor benefits. The company was purchased by a larger company with no manufacturing experience and brought in an incompetent management team to run it. The writing was on the wall, I had to leave. Overall it was a positive experience, the brightest part was certainly all the networking I was able to do throughout that time.

Don't forget, when it comes to getting a job in performance, it's not what you know its who you know

There's a GM Performance shop near me that works on Corvettes and Camaros, every time I pass looks like business is good always thought of stopping by and seeing if they have any openings for a technician.

We had a prima donna come in with an anniversary C5 corvette, he wanted tires changed. We are just a regular indy repair shop and I knew there was going to be issues. I even warned the service writer. Our tire machine is not the most current, but it is a touchless style. Anyways I thought I did a careful job. The owner didn't, he went over them with a fine tooth comb and found some marks on the outer most edge of the rims. Even the bodyshop guy said "It wasn't that bad". We now recommend the fancy cars to a tire shop.

I work at a tire shop and we can't do those kinds of tires either. Our machines struggle with 22 in OEM wheels. God forbid we run into run flats.

Dyno tuning is the ultimate in our trade. Nothing beats that in my opinion and nothing is as difficult. Learning stand alone ecu’s or factory reflash systems will push anyones abilities. Thats a trade within itself. I always liked wiring up race cars/bikes and the dyno tuning. Never liked the fab and wrenching stuff much. Engine work is fun in a performance application.

I have tried to look into that thanks to Mighty Car Mods and i found out it a LOT more difficult to deal with on your own vs paying a guy who build race cars in that vehicle...

The thing is with all performance upgrades especially turbo involved requires a lot of upgrades that you don’t realize And all honesty the mods to make it fit are not like the magizine or you tube video

Good video and true! You forgot to mention the customers who do their own installs and then realize they’re in over their heads and they bring it in for us to figure out. I’ve have seen some absolute nightmare cars like that!

I worked at a customs and performance shop and it didn't pay shit. Same with the other 2 here in Indianapolis. Flat rate or commission daily drivers pay the most here.

Strictly a line tech here…but I’d prefer my hot rod hobby stay a hobby…albeit a pain in the ass fixing others garbage and coming home to fix mine, it’d be way worse doing that at work and home on the performance side

I’ve worked in motorsports off n on for 12-13 years. Racing cars are cool because racers aren’t nearly as concerned with aesthetics of the car because the car is going to get belted with rocks, get wheel marks in the door, give and receive some “chrome horn” and so on. For them it’s function, reliability and weight are their concerns. Custom car trailer queen guys and hard core parking lot racers (hard parkers as I’ve heard them called) are the dicks that want every bolt head with the top flat parallel to the ground or have a total hissy fit if 1 washer is a slightly different shade of whatever coating is on it. Performance engine builders and tuners (not to be confused with engine assemblers) are worth their weight in gold. Not only do they know what pieces play well together, they can give you tuning options for putting down the highway or hurting someone’s feelings, and do so without melting your pistons or throwing rods out the side of the block.

Another problem with these customers is they are never, EVER, satisfied with the performance they get for the money they spend. Advertised performance improvements are never delivered in the real world... and it's always the mechanics fault. We stopped doing this sort of work back when Edelbrock was selling the fuel injection "packages" (intake manifold, TBI, and ECU). They never worked worth a shit and Edelbrock always blamed the person who installed it... until they fessed up and discontinued the pieces of junk. Good thing for the customers we never threw out the OEM parts.

Not to mention customers have no idea what these gain’s actually equate to behind the wheel. They hear these larger numbers and expect their car to do wheelies. 😂😂😂

The biggest issue is the persnickety customers you will have to deal with. Everything not perfect is an issue. I put a blower on for a guy once, who bitched that there were marks on the bolts......yeah
