David Seaman is joined by his former manager, one of the all-time greats, Arsene Wenger.
In the chat they discuss Arsene's Arsenal career, what he thought of the team when he arrived, the transformation in the club's culture when he took over, his title winning seasons, his new role with FIFA, the current Arsenal squad and also Mikel Arteta.
In Part One, Arsene talks about joining Arsenal and his first impressions of the team, changing the diets of the squad (and how Gary Neville took the idea back to Manchester United!), the highlights in his Arsenal career and Highbury.

That’s more to do with the timeframe of when Wenger was Arsenal manager compared to Graham when the Premier League wasn’t beginning to go global. It’s no signal on either manager being better or worse than the other.

To this day I still can't get my head round Ashley Cole selling his Sole for A few bags more? 😅 I FACED HIM ONE TIME AT A CLUB AND I just said Why? Why Ashley over a few grand Xtra per week? Why m8? People forget that we should have won the PL title 3 seasons on the bounce, we absolutely threw it away in the 02/03 season, we lead the title race for something like 77 percent of the season, then we lost form right at the worst moment just as United got some unbelievable results as the end. That Arsenal team of that era was so so good. Also Not sure David will see this but you were my absolute hero as a kid, I grew up playing GK, had all of the Arsenal shirts - I have a picture of me in my school fancy dress photo of about 10 years of age with my full Arsenal GK kit on and also sporting a drawn on moustache. Also as a kid I used to ask the hairdresser to cut my hair the same as yours - to the point where I was asking the Barber to give me your receding hairline! I thought that was the style at the time! I was a really promising keeper too, won player of tournaments a couple of times in local competitions, but I was absolutely tiny and by the time I was in my mid teens I was 5ft 6 and no one would give me a look, so packed it in. Wish I didn't cos by the time I was 20 I was 6ft 1 - not exactly huge for a keeper, but big enough - but thank you for being my inspiration for many years!

It's amazing the little nuggets you pick up on how Arsene thinks from this. Even when he was talking about the different approaches week to week in different countries, and how he would adapt his thought processes in mind with that. No wonder he was nicknamed Le Professeur. A true scholar of the game. Not many would think in such an open minded way in such a high pressure environment. Compare that to say Capello and it's clear why one was successful with English talent and the other was a complete failure. On a side note, it was pretty funny when he recalled how he was close to getting the Arsenal job a year before he did but that the club went for the slightly safer choice at the time. Yet, after a year went back to the manager that they felt left the best impression on them. Pretty much the exact same thing happened to Mikel when he got the job. Missed out to Unai the year before, but got it the next year. Arsenal, eh? We're a club where our traditions seem to follow in the most charmed of ways.

That's why Wenger will always be class. Arteta should learn this from him. You don't just throw out big characters away just because you're the boss
@Chigz10
@Chigz10 8 ай бұрын
Wenger had big characters that wanted to win and knew how to win, they were just difficult to manage. Arteta had to change the culture of a club that had players that didn’t know how to win and didn’t care enough about winning, so it’s different. Although I do think he can learn in that regard and be better, he’s still a young manager
@dchampionpraisekeyz8341
@dchampionpraisekeyz8341 8 ай бұрын
@@Chigz10Not true. Martinez wanted to win for instance, ozil is a winner. Listen to Wenger, he said he gave them a chance to change their culture not just giving them attitudes or throwing them out. Wenger always rewards performing players with more game time but Arteta always do the opposite because he's bias. When have you heard anytime that Wenger was bias to certain players????
@Chigz10
@Chigz10 8 ай бұрын
@@dchampionpraisekeyz8341 Martinez wanted to play, players leave for more opportunities all the time including under Wenger. Ozil is a terrible example lol he got a 350k a week contract and fell off, he absolutely did not care about winning by the end and that was an issue before Arteta got there. And one of the major flaws of Wenger towards the end was that he was massively biased in favour of players that were not good enough and wouldn’t improve on them

@@finding_aether Didn't you heard what Wenger and David are saying??? The old players then had past their prime as they were over 30 and could cause problems to the team but Wenger change to playing from the back to suit Adams and Co which involves less running but more of intelligence, Wenger didn't sell them and went to bring in ball playing defenders straight away

I love Arsene Wenger quote about the English fight, and the older generations, it is true, and something I lament in modern society in a more general way, we are losing men who know how to fight when it matters....passivity and lack of will and determination is becoming an infectious disease in modern culture and Tony Adams and Co, Roy Keene, of Utd, optimised how men can and should forge themselves for the betterment of themselves their families and communities. Their sports, professions and so on and life in general. Uniformity is not a good thing, and they call it diversity! 🤣PS Arsenal fan since the early 70s. Loved Brady and co 78, 79, 80 and all the years after But Dennis, Henry, Pires, wow!

He extended the careers of Seaman, Bould, Winterburn, Keown and Dixon. Tony Adams had a lot of injuries and when fit was still world class to the day he retired. He just couldn’t hack the operations anymore. Ian Wright had his best ever PL season under Wenger in 1996/97 and scored around 25 goals at 32 years old which was past a player’s peak at that age back then. Since Wenger arrived, we have not just seen players carry on playing past 32 in the PL but past 36 and 37. His scientific methods changed the PL forever. Every manager followed suit. It proved his downfall in the end as once everyone realised how he was so successful, they all followed suit. Not to mention once Chelsea had Abramovich take over, the door he had with his contacts in France and around the world for cheap world class talent was closed. Chelsea and then Man City would simply hijack all our deals with overinflated transfer fees.
