this is my favorite episode of the show so far very pertinent to my situation. I am in my early 40s and the siren song of competition is always calling me. I try to keep perspective of just getting on the mat and being able to practice as my goal, but there’s something deep inside that is urging me to compete against all better judgment, even with the intellectual knowledge it’s hard to not just go on the tournament website and sign my name in and compete even though it’s not what I know is best for me

Really enjoyed the podcast again and follow Chris ever since. Man, I feel brown takes me forever and maybe I stay purple forever 😂. Coming from other martial arts and combat sports , also instructor and professional LEO DT/arrest +control tactics instructor, I transitioned later to grappling. 24 years on the mat overall, 14 years in grappling. 4 years white, 4 years blue and right now still purple belt for 6 years. Almost 48 years old, husband and father, recreational level 3-4 times a week on the mats plus DT instruction. So I think It probably will take me 20 years to achieve a bjj black belt 😂🙈! I still enjoy teaching, training and learning Jiu Jitsu though, independent of the belt level, and it keeps me physically and mentally fit! Keep up the great work, greetings from Germany 🇩🇪

Learn the art at the older ages is some thing I started a yr back from bad neck injury. 43 yr old brown belt. That is a beautiful answer and a real gem.

I think it takes 10 years using the traditional approach. By using EcoD we force people to raise all levels of skill at the same time : it won’t take that long . IMO

I have ten years in 6 months…. I hope to have 20 more that’s all I care about. I’d like a black belt but it changes nothing.

That's a good attitude to have I believe.

You can do BJJ for 30 years, but if you're a 55 year old man, it's going to be very tough to handle a 20 year old competition blue belt. This is the thing people need to understand. A belt doesn't carry magical powers, it's a recognition of time in grade.

No, competency or former competency is a part of the belt. I have met 55 yr black belts who still kick 20 yr comp blue belts butts, but the thing is their game wasn’t attribute based but technique and timing based and that’s why they were able to do so well, even with a 20yr blue belt.

Not gonna lie, without the femme fatale /CEO, I almost skipped this episode because I wasn’t sure you guys could hold it together. What a pleasant surprise.

Sunee definitely has the silky smooth voice for an easy listening radio station if he decides that the MMA thing is not gonna work out!
