I am a former caver from Kentucky. My days of crawling on my belly as my back scrapes the cave ceiling are long over and I feel thankful to still be living. Even if I were thin like I was then, there’s no way. The thought of these really tight caves terrifies me now. Maybe it’s the John Jones story that was the tipping point for me.

WHY? I DON’T GET IT! I’m an advanced scuba diver, I’ve been skydiving a few times and I’ve explored caves while walking upright. I will never understand the attraction of crawling on your belly meters into the earth thru crevices barely big enough to fit through all the while risking getting stuck. I can’t even bare to watch these types of videos beginning to end, my anxiety goes off the charts, this type of caving gives me a deep visceral feeling of panic.

Yes. We are part of that organisation. The state and the forest service work with the caving groups. Rescues do not need to be performed very often... but there are people ready for that.

I hate ttight spaces but as a kid i remember going in this really tight tunnel under a bridge along a stream in a place called blaze castle bristol uk going to go up and take photos so i can see how small it actually was i entered flat on my face on one side of the bridge and it went to the other side side side of the pass over in a u shape.

Well primarily we try not to get them. A few times I noticed cramping when I got tired and the remedy was just to work my legs harder at the gym. If I'm in a cave and I start cramping in my legs I will usually just leave. But to be in generally good physical condition is the best remedy

Basically. We're in Washington. There is plenty of publicly listed caves in Oregon. Theyre spread out so as long as you have a car you'll be in good shape. Some of them are also tough to get to during the Winter. We'll do some group caving events this summer most likely. In the Portland area.
