Well done for standing up to the bullies Simon. When people threaten to bring in the lawyers they are often bluffing. Lawyers themselves often bluff and use chest beating language in the letters they send. Years ago I was sent a legal letter threatening court if I did not pay the guy who had bought my house £200 in compensation for having to take some garden tools to the tip that I had left for him; we are talking half a dozen hand tools, spades and the like which I thought he might find useful. I just ignored it and never heard from him or his solicitor again.

Amazing! Alison got her money back regarding the meal that wasn't paid for, but what about loss of earnings due to having to close, stress, ill health? Bottom line is none of this should've happened & it's down to them that it did. It's been on Facebook, all papers, police Facebook. It happened & it's already been seen & reported in the media. I hope they've learned their lesson. Main thing is that Alison is happy 🥰👍

I studied the law of defamation (and malicious falsehood) at university and subsequently qualified as a barrister, although non-practising. I can honestly tell you that if this couple were to sue you it would be ruinously expensive for them to even commence the case. For this reason they appear to be making idle threats to get you to back down. Moreover, the main defences to a defamation action would be available to you:- 1) Justification (truth) 2) Fair comment 3) Qualified Privilege 4) Absolute Privilege Although 3) and 4) are not applicable in this case, 1) and 2) would be perfectly reasonable and valid defences. Everything would depend upon the Court's interpretation of all the facts, evidence and circumstances. If this couple cannot afford a restaurant or fast food bill, then they will not be able to raise thousands of pounds, more likely tens of thousands of pounds, to commence litigation, not forgetting the additional ongoing fees, costs and solicitors bills etc. Defamation actions need to be lodged with the High Court.
