This is very striking but seems quite simple to make. Thank you for sharing. After trying this I wanted to add my thoughts. First, you need soft yarn for this piece. Using worsted weight I chained with a K hook and crocheted with a J and it was still tight, dense and stiff, not at all airy. It also tended to bow out on the pattern rows and draw in on the sc rows. I ended up ripping mine out for a different pattern. I would strongly recommend you do a practice swatch first before starting a project.

I modified this stitch of yours. Instead of doing 2 rows of single crochet, I only did one row and preceded to do the double double crochet in the next row and so on and so forth. It's coming out pretty cool.
