To be fair the Japanese have every right to be mad considering people get up in arms when they make a black character a shade lighter 🤔

It’s like making Afro samurai white skin when the first season he was dark skin. And it’s cannon not a fan art.

@@JusDrainlook I understand what you're saying I'm not disagreeing with you, it's just that kid had the misfortune of receiving the built up frustration from people from Japan seeing a lot of there characters skin tone and race change to black also either saying or implying that they are better now.

It won’t even that big deal honestly.. and to be real the damn dandadan characters don’t even look Japanese, they look like white people…The lil girl didn’t imply that her drawing was better either she was just making fan art..It was just racist ass people wanting to say something and make it a big deal..🤷🏾‍♀️

You know what's actually funny about this whole situation just like how Piccolo is claimed as Black by certain DB fans Goku is claimed as white yet people only have a problem when Piccolo is claimed as Black even if it is a joke. Heck the Japanese has Korean Manwha characters have their race swapped to Japanese whenever the series gets and anime the character is even given a Japanese name and all yet they have a problem when Japanese characters are made Black for some reason despite doing it themselves. Heck this isn't even getting into how they harass Black cosplayers who dress as fictional characters that aren't even Japanese sometimes.

Pretty sure you miss the whole point. While, yes, bullying, doxing, death threats - regardless of the reasoning behind, be it justified or outright stupid - are bad. That I agree wholeheartedly, people are just being the worst type of bullies - twitterfreaks. The age, the problem, the idea; none of that matter to them, they just want to be bad people who bully for the sake of mainstream and bullying. The whole point and reason for the controversy was the fact that asian characters got race swapped as if them being asian is something that must be changed to enjoy the media. Whilst, yes, the fanart creator did their drawing for fun, for themselves, for showing their appreciation towards the media, it still erased the whole idea of the original characters being asian. It wouldn’t be much a problem from the japanese, if the original characters were the typical non-asian characters in anime that are just constantly drawn as having pale skin, but the original characters are asian. It’s akin to drawing POC characters not as POC, just drawing an asian not as an asian. And for the VAs, pretty sure the main problem the japanese artists were pissed at them was because the VA kept talking about equality (blacks being denied stuff on the reason of racism, which, honestly, sucks), whilst being a hypocrite themselves (“only poc can voice poc, because culture!!!” as if the skin colour has any connection to understanding the voiced character and the world they are set in) + additionally supporting the controversial fanart. Now, true to words, racism towards POC in asia exists, unfortunately. Many fanarts of characters that canonically have any amount of melanin in their skin depict them fair-skinned, as if they’re hikkis sitting in the corner of their rooms and not some characters that actually know how their outdoors look. Whilst hating on such artist with the whole typical twitter doxing and threats, is too much, they definitely deserve the dislike they get for such fanarts. Similar to how this situation with asian characters being drawn as non-asians. I’m sure the artist didn’t have racism in my mind and did the whole fanart because they like the media and wanted to have a closer connection to characters by depicting them as black, because, unfortunately, there still so little black characters in any media and especially anime (that aren’t portrayed with outright black skin and huge puffy pink lips and are actually characters than a one time gag in the show). But the whole look of it is bad, since it comes off - whilst definitely having good thoughts in mind - as a racism towards asian culture by making asian characters black.

It’s fan art, so people have a problem with black people cosplaying as a Japanese character too huh? Going by this logic we can cosplay as characters we love and enjoy because we not Japanese?

Did you read my comment at all? I fail to see how cosplay fits with all the fanart controversy and the whole blackwashing non-black characters. 1. It’s fanart, yes. People are free to enjoy the media however they want. Doesn’t mean that their “however they want” is lawful and good all the time. There was nothing wrong with the artist doing a fanart for their favourite media, the japanese had their problem with blackwashing asian characters, as if the artist couldn’t enjoy asian characters as asians. The artist didn’t have a thought of erasing asians in mind, that’s true, but they also did it by changing the race of the characters - also true. Was the backlash warranted? Yes. Can the bullying towards the artist and the racists coming out (whilst not belonging to either the artitst’s following nor to the actual fans of the show) be justified? No. 2. Raceswapping any characters with confirmed race is bad. Racism exist towards any race. Granted, they are different cases of raceswapping: out of “what if miku was brazillian?” (curiosity to see how a certain character would look with a different race) and out of “i want this character to be [insert any race] because i think it fits them more than [insert original race]” (purposefully removing the original race of the character because they can’t do fanart with original race for some reason - don’t get me wrong, the artist did this (while unintentional), but there are plenty of other artists who do the same (unintentional or not) with POC characters being drawn white and not “under harsh white light”, but white as a sheet of paper). And if the curiosity just shows an AU, the second option screams racism, open or closeted, purposeful or accidental - doesn’t matter. As for cosplaying, the judges look at the craftsmanship and how alike to the character, real and good the clothes and stuff look. There are also different entrances, like a team one, where you perform a play of the characters - then there’s also the matter of how entertaining you are, whether or not you stay in character or how badly coordinated your movements are. Judges do not look at the skin, gender or beliefs of the cosplayer. If they do - they are bad judges and the winners are likely to be buying their places. Additionally, going by your logic in this comment (because I certainly did not put this logic in either of my comments), asians can’t enjoy western media, speak western languages, wear western clothes, because they are asians?

@@nanaoh_rennts Bro literally set up a strawman and then dodged it with the Cosplaying response because there are people who cosplay for fun and post the images online but then Japanese Twitter would have a fit when it would be a Black person cosplaying an Asian character but this same hate never came when a fair skinned cosplayer cosplayed as that same character.

I think the fan art looks cool. I don’t mind race swapping as long as there is no ill intent. Someone could make a white panther fan art and I wouldn’t care as long as it stayed fan art. Someone can make Tiana Asian and I wouldn’t care. It’s all about the intentions. I think it’s cool imagining other characters as different races

@revivalakame Afro Samurai’s identity as a Black character is central to the story and its cultural impact. The series blends elements of Japanese culture with themes from Black history and identity, making his race and background an integral part of who he is, not just a random choice. When we talk about race-swapping characters, it’s important to understand the difference between celebrating diversity and erasing the significance of a character’s heritage. Changing Afro Samurai’s ethnicity to Mexican, for example, would strip away the cultural context and the unique lens through which the story is told. This isn’t about ‘crying’ or being sensitive-it’s about respecting the deeper meaning behind characters that represent underrepresented communities. Instead of altering existing stories, we should focus on creating new ones that celebrate and uplift other cultures authentically and meaningfully. The person who drew Dandadan didn’t do it out of disrespect or change a culture he did it to represent himself. No ill intent just did it for fun no culture change because their are black people who do live and go to school in japan. Right?
