It's not bubble without at least one fried egg on top , as kids it was normally cabbage, chopped sprouts and mash . It did most certainly bubble & squeak when it was frying. It was a nice filling hearty winter warmer on a Monday night when getting home from school. I'm from the same era as Martin.

We never really had much veg - and definitely no roast spuds! - left in our house to make Bubble that often. Definitely not at Christmas when my Mum cooked for 14. Back in the 60s nothing got wasted so, like you, my Mum would have made some mash to add to any veg we had over. Oh, and she'd chop an onion into it too 😋 Me & my sisters (not my brother!) are big fans of almost all veg. I'm a big fan of carrots, brussels and really dark greens: l even loved school greens😂 You can smell Bubble cooking a mile off. That distinctive 'charring' (burnt!) smell instantly takes us all back to our childhood in our Mum's kitchen ♡ (Sharon mentioning this hot me all nostalgic...Manzes (SE18) and Cooke's (SE1) = Pie & Mash with Liquor, loads of pepper and vinegar! 😋)

You are 100% right sir the good old cafes are mostly gone now and they have replaced the good old bubble and squeak with the poxy frozen hash browns which I cannot stand on a breakfast.😂. We have bubble and squeak at least once a fortnight on the Monday with the Sunday dinner leftover veg🤤. Merry Christmas and happy new year to you all 🎄

My whole family never used mash in bubble and squeak… it always has been roast potatoes….always cooked with bacon…. Bubble is the veg and squeak is the bacon (piggy). I guess different families have different left overs, it’s all yummy. Mines never mashed up like that but cut up very small…strange that even with left overs there’s family recipes 😂

Love bubble 👍 always have this on Boxing Day all the roast veg , roast spud and Brussels ( never put Caulif cheese in it ) cold meat , chestnut stuffing , pork stuffing and pickles 😋 look delicious , I agree Sharon about preferring this to the Christmas dinner 👍🤣

@ chestnut stuffing I make has no meat , chestnuts puréed and chopped , breadcrumbs, lemon zest and egg , it’s honestly delicious, the pork stuffing I mince the pork and add whatever I decide but always fruit in it , apples or apricot then whatever I choose on the day , it goes down well whatever it is . I agree about the pickles for sure definitely not as good .Hope you are having a lovely Christmas

Oh Yummy. I do love B & S. We always ad it with any left over potatoes (roast or mashed) and any veg. Was usually cabbage (cheapest or self grown0 Tues was Cottage pie and mash. When we had a meal, we were not allowed to leave any. We also never got large portions of meat because it was all good food. And there had to be some left for Tues and Weds.
