As a painter on the boring side of the wall (I like smooth blends) I can say that this method is the only one I've been using effectively to get actual smooth blends with acrylics in a controlled way on tiny surfaces over the years. Pretty strightforward and down to earth piece of advice, in my very humble opinion this little video is really valuable. Good job! 👍

Good video. This is very close to how I paint. The big difference is that I don't go to 3:1 water to paint dilution immediately. I start glazing with a slightly stronger glaze and then get more transparent as I go. It just gets you there a little quicker. Plus, if you haven't experimented with medium you may want to. I know people are getting good results with just water, but using medium for glazes means that the paint will flow like paint, be more controllable, and you don't have to worry about over thinning to the point where there's no solid paint film and new layers lift pigment and make the model gritty.

the problem I have when trying to glaze with water diluted paint (and i noticed different paints are worse than others) the paint on the miniature starts to "pool" and it doesnt just cover the area i brushed on with a uniform layer of pigment but the water starts to move around the miniature and the pigment kinda sticks in certain spots. I feel like getting rid of that water from the brush might help tremendously but i've always seen in guide people mix paint 3:1 with water and all it seemingly does is the brushstroke area just gets a little less pigment and blends nicely and it's never been my experience, so i mostly just use stippling to blend...

Wetting up the kitchen roll used to unload Paint helps alot to keep the brush moist and give smoother marks!

Really great result that, I agree it's not much fun agonising over blends...but it is kinda addictive. I think there's a balance and if it is doing ya head in that much ya can always take a break, paint something else and work on smoothing up the blends when ya in the mood to do that. plus the more you do the boring repetitive stuff the more it locks in your mind and muscle memory and the less effort it takes when you do it again, so I always think of that stuff as like programming my brain to become efficient. Pretty similar to what i do. But i use mediums so I have more control. And the fact that more pigment ends where you finish the brush stroke, so with careful planed and precise strokes i get the same effect faster.

@@jcrr1972 yeah, don't use any others really. And I've been trying just with water, it works well enough with most paints for most purposes. For flat surfaces like capes i always add a tiny bit of glaze medium.

Why isn't this channel bigger? Painting isn't my favourite thing to do and I've realised that, when I first started in the hobby I used to do shit paintjobs in my minis and I was happy with them, then I got older and wanted them to look good and realised that I can't paint that well enough for my perfectionist tendency and that I apparently have zero patience!!! But recently I've been painting some space marines using some 80's paints and guides and so I've been trying my hand at blending and, it's okay, but not so great. I'll definitely use the advice in this video next time, just wish I'd seen it a fortnight ago!! ;P

Great technique and magnificent spacewolf paint ! I think there must be something with the acrylic dilution..saw recently artist Jennifer Haley special dilution : -25% liquitex slow dri + 25% winsor&newton flow improver + 50%water for glazes details. -50% W&N flow improver + 50% water for ultra fine details. I think the water better be distillated water or demineralised water (a little less pure than the other..) Or have good result dilution with GW lamian medium too..

thinning medium, instead of water, will prevent paint breaking up into medium and pigtments. even smoother blends...

Tbh I have a HUGE problem with thinning mediums, that’s why I never use them. In my experience they make the paint super glossy and it’s efff annoying. Way more annoying than me!

I can definitely not say ooomg you are wrong, because well there’s a lot on KZbin about glazing. But you know, in total honesty I never understood how to actually use it to get smooth blends until my friend explained it to me like I explained it in the vid. But hey maybe I’m thick in the head lol but it’s all true for me it was life changing!
