In the second instalment of American Viscountess at Deans Court, I harvest organic vegetables in the kitchen garden; encounter Orlando and Pringle - the resident goats who help mow the meadows; and hear how buried treasures were unearthed from the Roman period. deanscourt.org

I grew up on a 27 acre farm.in New Jersey. My Dad raised chickens for eggs. As a 4-H child, I had 30 Turkeys , 200 chickens and 15 to 20 sheep. We also had a big vegetable and flower garden. No cows, no horses, no steers. I sold my animals, I didn't slaughter(That's not a pleasant word) any of them. People begged for my Turkeys at Thanksgiving and Christmas, the chickens became barbecue at our County Fair and the Sheep went elsewhere, they were food not pets. I have been a non meat eater for quite a while, even then I knew where they ended up, but ignored my own inner feelings. Seeing those sheep being kept as useful estate members, of course the wool and the natural grass plowing benefits the place, really felt good . It's ironic how some of the most famous Vegan/vegetarian. whole food Doctors started their lives as Farmers, but realistically the most we can hope for is some middle ground which you so ably demonstrate. Cheers, Frederick "Rik" Spector

No-dig gardening is definitely the way to go. I decided to do it in my garden right from the beginning, despite the disbelievers and side-eyes I got lol. My soil is bursting with life of all kinds, and this summer I got a clear indication that the mycelia (aka mushroom fungus network under the soil) is thriving. Mushrooms don't grow in crappy soil, so I was so happy I took a picture. Well a few pictures! I always have a great harvest, my plants have (knock on wood) never had any kind of massive infestation or disease (having healthy soil means healthy plants, which means they're better able to fight off disease), and I have WAY less weeding than my neighbours who till the soil.

Were the serpentain kitchen garden walls original or made that way in contemporry tims because Thomas Jefferson integrated curving walls at the University of Virginia that were made one brick wide and curved to give it strength. This design feature was found out when the university grounds were being rennovated years ago.

Curious about the reference to John Hannum returning from Virginia with the two trees in 1607, which was the year the settlement of Jamestowne was founded in the future colony of Virginia. Was he a member of a ship’s crew?

Researched this and learned that Hanham was an initial investor in the Virginia Company, but did not go to the New World. In late 1607, Capt Christopher Newport returned to London after transporting the settlers; he must have brought back the trees for Hanham.

@@AmericanViscountess naw, you had the cow phobia before that, it’s clearly more deep seated anxiety than that recent event. Yoga is great but try CBT! Developed specifically for this kind of thing! Do it and thank me later ;) Cows are naturally curious and gentle. If the cow wanted to threaten you or hurt you you’d be history and alot of cattle farmers would be killed regularly. And goats aren’t cattle. It’s visibly irratic fear you’ll feel so much better if you can leave behind you. I’d be too curious not to get to the bottom of it, psychology fascinates me so. I have one phobia, fear of heights/vertigo, from an experience at age 15 I’ll deal with through CBT, because everything else doesn’t do the trick even if breathing excersizes are great etc. I want it gone. hypnotherapy and CBT are very effective methods. I used to be thrilled with heights as a kid, it’s rediculous, fussiness is not my character. You’ll be more relaxed when you get it overwirh my friend, you live in the country! Go get ’em! 😄❤️💪

julie, can you tell me why that beautiful rock wall surrounding the garden was serpentine? was there a reason? just for looks, or did the curves create some kind of biosphere of growth? the aerial view is stunning, you can see just how wonderful it looked from the sky. a rock wall gently curving gently along, like a wave of water.
@OnDasherOnDancer
@OnDasherOnDancer 2 жыл бұрын
The serpentine shape stabilizes the wall, making it easier to stay standing up. This way, the wall does not have to be nearly as thick as a straight wall and uses much less stone. The serpentine line makes it a mite longer, but still uses less stone, ergo: less labor, less money, fewer repairs (blah, blah…sorry!)
@marywest2896

@@OnDasherOnDancer thanks so much for the information, it really does make sense now that you said that, the wall really looked thin from the air, but wasn't it pretty how they had little vignettes of plantings in the curves? I loved it.
