You Won’t Find This Vietnamese Dish Served Like This Anywhere Else

In this food travel vlog, Trang and I eat bánh xèo (banh xeo) and bánh căn (banh can) served in a style that is specific to this middle Vietnam region, aka miền trung (central region). Even more specifically, the banh can that is served here is a food that you will only find in Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan Provinces of Vietnam.
We ate this Vietnamese food in Phan Rang, Ninh Thuan, Vietnam. The name and address of the restaurant are:
Bánh xèo bánh căn Năm Lai
Võ Nguyên Giáp, Mỹ Đông, Phan Rang-Tháp Chàm, Ninh Thuận
We had a full on feast of two plates of banh xeo, a plate of banh can, and sugarcane juice, for a total price of 125k VND, or about $5.11.
Both banh xeo and banh can are “Vietnamese pancakes” made with a batter of rice flour and turmeric. Banh xeo are slightly larger, have a yellow-ish color, and are shaped sort of like an omelette. Banh Can are more of a white color, more miniature in shape, and have the shape of a small flying saucer.
The banh xeo here in the mien trung region are distinctly different than the banh xeo served in the south, or “mien tay” region, in that they are much smaller. Instead of one very large piece of “Vietnamese crepe” or Vietnamese pancake, in mien trung the banh xeo are served in several smaller sized portions. This allows for more of the delicious, crispy fried edges, and allows for (in my opinion) a functionally easier eating experience.
Both of these dishes are served with a special peanut dipping sauce that you won’t be served anywhere else in Vietnam while eating these dishes. It’s a really nice dipping sauce that smells and tastes just like peanuts you would get at a Dodger baseball game.

In Vietnam, don't judge the quality of the foods based on the look of the place. While a good argument can be made on cleanliness, some of the best tasting foods are found at places like this - and for a much cheaper price. Foods look good Tyler. Stay well and happy.

Love the video... shrimp are sometimes consumed with the shell on. Vietnamese eat shrimp without having to remove the shell. There are a lot of vitamins and nutrients in the shell. Also if you prepare it properly the shell is not noticeable when consuming it. I personally love shrimp with the shell still on. YUM!!! :) Goes great with some Nuoc Mom baby... :)

Ban Xeo was my favourite discovery in Ho Chi Minh after the famous egg coffee! I wish I'd had more time there before heading to KL. The north of Vietnam was amazing though, so I have no regrets. I did find Tet a little tricky to navigate in Hanoi given all the closures. Glad you guys had a good time

I’ve had the banh xeo mini before, they’re good. Oh and funny tidbit. I know you ride motorbikes. But seeing you riding on the back of one. With your ex. I got a kick out of it. I’m a big guy too. I haven’t started riding on my own yet. So I’m 6 ft about 170lbs. Mai Vietnamese wife rides me around all the time. I’m glad I’m not the only one that does that lol. It’s good seeing you out man.

haha yeah I've done most of the driving since then on this trip but she knew the way to that restaurant and it was a bit far so she figured it would just be easier for her to drive. @ 27:20 - 27:30 trang is way off. Seems like she's only aware of where she's from and the southern part of vietnam. I guess she never visited the other central provinces of vietnam before. She did get one thing right although wasn't fully convinced herself but bình thuận does make this style of bánh căn as well. Im surprised they still do being so close to the south with it's influences. However, if trang look slightly northward on the vietnam map and next to ninh thuận there's khánh hoà, phú yên (my hood) and bình định we're known for this type of dishes especially my hood and bình định.

The reason why they leave the shell on the shrimps is it keeps the moisture, you're suppose to peel it while you eat...I'd eat the whole shell, head and tail :-)

no she just studied at normal Vietnamese schools in Vietnam...she's very sharp and good and picking up languages. she's learning Mandarin now
