In the south, we've been making hotdogs just like this for 80+ years at curb service drive ins and diners. It's either hotdog with mustard, chili and onions or "all the way" which means all that plus coleslaw. Growing up my parents owned a BP station with a little pickup restaurant of this style. We sold millions of hotdogs, hamburgers, RC cola and Moon Pies.

Those are actually NY System Hot Weiners. They are a regional thing especially in Rhode Island. When I was young, some 50 years ago, you could by them for 2 for 25 cents! Even later you could get 3 for a buck. Steamed rolls, steamed onions, thined out mustard and a meat sauce on top. Then hit them with little celery salt. Delicious. In Rhode Island the drink of choice with hot weiners was and is Coffee Milk, another RI favorite.
