It's like the massive numbers of mental health issues that so many people are proud to claim they suffer from. Years ago we would have recognised that most were nothing more than a lack of character, and most people would have been deeply ashamed to play this card.

@@DavidGetling it's not a lack of character. It's just the human response of wanting an explanation. And the ease of just accepting a mental health issue as the reason they don't feel right. Then if they do something and fail they can blame that rather than accepting it's likely something they did and looking at themselves for solutions. It's a product of the environment.

I have binge eating disorder since I was 11 or 12 and I’m 64 now and still yo yo dieting, it’s definitely psychological with me, very depressing when a grownup can’t control what she puts in her own mouth, habit comes into it too. Losing weight, eating healthily, moving more should be easy enough, and it is for many, wish I was one of them

Some feeders do it as a kind of control, even if they don't realize, and yes, they should be held responsible. If it's mum, she's effectively keeping him as her helpless 'baby', and she's too stupid to see that she's slowly killing him. Used to know one like that, who overfed her toddler son until he was morbidly obese, then later took him out of school because she claimed he was being bullied (he wasn't), then kept feeding him until by the age of 11, he was huge. She came up with all sorts of excuses, including blaming his 'medical condition' for his obesity, or his 'genes', made him think he was ill and kept him isolated from other kids so she could control him - and living on a farm in the middle of nowhere gave her real power over him, with nobody to intervene (dad had long gone). Fortunately, the boy had a bit of a revelation in his late teens, moved out and had the willpower to starve himself down to a normal weight, but if he hadn't rebelled, I could see him in a similar position to the obese guy in the video.

The levels of obesity in the UK is truly shocking and warrants a national investigation. Look at pictures from the 1960s and 1970s. The blame lies clearly with low fat high carb ultra processed foods that are being told is good and healthy for us. If we all ate a real food diet high in fat and low in carbs and no seed oils there wouldn’t be an issue. The drive to make us all eat a plant based diet is packed with carbs sugar and seed oils is killing us slowly with big pharmaceutical not curing but peddling drugs that prolong the misery. A cynic would say the food manufactures and big Pharmaceutical are in cahoots.

Absolutely agree. I cut out sugar and wheat ( modern gm wheat) and there’s whole aisles in the supermarket I just didn’t bother with because it was just wheat and sugar all the way down. Plus takeaway Fish and chips used to be cooked in meat fats- lard, dripping etc - back when no one was fat. And ice cream was too. Now it’s all vegetable oils. And look at the obesity. Worst of all is the baby milk- highly processed. Whole fresh cows milk from six months plus other bits of bread and mashed dinners used to be normal and no obese kids then.

This condition does not happen overnight..it doesn’t happen with one or two meals, it occurs over time by constant over eating. I believe people need to begin taking accountability for themselves. Medical conditions can cause issues, I fully appreciate that but that doesn’t excuse you not taking responsibility in adjusting your lifestyle and life choices. I have a thyroid issue and arthritis giving me mobility issues so I’ve had to make lifestyle choices to account for that. If I eat what you’d consider a normal daily calorie intake WITHOUT compensating with what exercise I can do, I will put on weight…it’s really very simple! If you consume more calories then you use, your weight will increase. With the same diet over the last 15yrs I began gaining weight until I was diagnosed..which is when I made the adjustment to my lifestyle. I’ve lost 12lbs in 2 months by not really doing anything drastic. I will never understand how people say ‘it’s cheaper to eat unhealthy food’….NO IT IS NOT! Any take away now for 1 will cost you anywhere between £10/£20. The cheapest food you can buy in supermarkets is fruit & veg etc…and who are the individuals feeding people unhealthy food if the person eating it can’t get out of bed? It’s time people stopped blaming everyone else..fast food companies do not drag you into their establishments or force you to pick up the phone and get your unhealthy food delivered…we’ve become a nation scared to speak the truth through fear of being labelled uncaring or nasty etc etc..as the saying goes ‘the truth hurts’

Last year my dad was suffering from breathing problems and his mobility was reduced and consequently he gained a fair amount of weight. He managed to see a doctor ( a miracle in itself!) and was given an inhaler to help his breathing - which it did very successfully - and also advised to go on a healthy course at the local library. By taking accountability for his own unhealthy patterns he lost 2 stone and now at 73 is much more healthy and active than he was 10 years ago. However there were also 5 women on the course not one of which lost any weight. One womens excuse was it was so hot today that I had to eat 2 Magnums! No one forced her to do that and they certainly aren't cheap. We must be accountable for ourselves.

I can never understand why people don't become aware of their problem when they get to, let's say, 18 to 20 stone, when they are still capable of doing something about it. There must be a mental aspect.

The truth is if you don’t move around you can’t burn any calories. And it’s hard to keep under 1000 calories to actually lose weight. If you just sit there you only burn about 40/50 calories an hour which is 960/1200 in 24 hours.

Having lost seven stone on a basically porridge and potato diet in my 50s, with min exercise, the idea it's about exercise and lack of money for healthy foods, astounds me. As does prescribing pills or surgery to paper over an eating disorder. Their eating habits/addiction has to be broken, and that ultimately requires a desire and self discipline off the individual. Easier said than done, and sadly many will be unable to make the change. I would suggest this needs to be addressed at school age, monitoring children's weight and lessons on diet and nutrition, along with "fat camps" where obese older individuals, can be sent, to be exposed to healthy eating and be educated towards permanent healthy lifestyle changes along with with advice on how to cope with any phycological issues..

@@cristianionascuI disagree. If you obtain your daily calories from nutritious foods instead of harmful non nutritious foods then your body will naturally lose weight whatever your age. I’m 65 and have lost 20lbs over recent months without even trying. I just altered my diet and cut out stuff that was causing me some uncomfortable symptoms. I didn’t really want or intend to lose any weight.

@@barbaraeastham9205 I was mostly referring to people's inability to change their behavior beyond 40. You are an exception, as I was myself when I lost over 20kg, although I was not fat, just wanted to find my younger body, now I'm in between. Mostly though, people do not change when they are over 40, they find taking pills or accepting it, easier. Good for you for your wise choice.

It costs no more to eat the correct amount of healthy food than to eat lots of unhealthy food and get fat. We make too many excuses. You can prepare good food rather quickly if you're used to the routine of it and get organized at home and with shopping.

In tv shows like ‘ my 600 lb life’ there almost always seem to be people willing to enable the person. Bringing them the worst food choices, cooking and taking care of their dail6 needs - children, partners, parents etc. usually there r underlying reasons that needs to be addressed but they need to seek psychological help before it reaches this point.

I tried to tell the staff at my surgery that I was worried about my Son being overweight. I was concerned he'd end up diabetic. He was an adult but wouldn't listen to me and while I understand that doctors can't discuss my Son's health with me, they could have just listened to what I was saying. I knew he'd listen to a nurse or doctor because he had done when he was found to have high blood pressure. I asked if they could write to him and call him in for a check up, saying it was routine, but I was told no. Well years down the line, he's now diabetic and still not listening to me. He's now vegan which should be good for diabetics, but not when he's still eating vegan cakes and chocolates. If only medical staff had helped me to help him when I asked, things would be so much easier. He's no where near as big as the man shown here but he is too fat.

One point raised was the question of whether the NHS should treat these people free of charge with self afflicted obesity issues. I understand why people might say they should not, but I think then we are crossing a never-ending line where smokers would not be treated, drinkers the same, but then also step into the realms of people having accidents while indulging in "unnecessary" sports. Not a good road to go down imo.

On my way home from work a few years back, I was in a queue in a fish and chip shop. I’d be grafting all day and simply wanted a fish and a bread cake. The lady in front of me was an office worker and had ordered a vast platter c/w cheesy chips. The sow was 20+ stone and came alive when discussing the cheesy chips with the staff. I kept my distance from her as faeces were showing through her tent like trousers. It is purely down to low self esteem and poor parenting, these slobs are a disgrace!
