John .. love your videos .. but I think this is one of your best ones .. my son and I are always talking about learning how to analyze hitters based on where they setup in the box .. this video also addresses conversations we have about about pitch selection .. we are getting more into conversations about tunneling. He has issues with his catchers at times because they want one thing and he wants another .. I like the fact that you invite catchers to listen to this video too .. they all should. I think a great follow up video to this one would be to talk about how to analyze the hitter and how he sets up in the box. Once again, great job and keep up the good work!

Awesome! Thanks for the comment! Yeh, I could talk for hours about this stuff! Maybe I need to just to do a long video one day. I usually try to keep it short and get one or a few points across so I don't lose the viewers attention but I know there are a handful of guys out there who would really dig in if I did a longer video. I'll have to try it. But I'll definitely do one about the analyzing the set up. Thanks again!

Excellent video. Really helpful. My son is a 12U catcher and had the opportunity to play up this season on the 7th/8th grade middle school team. Coach wants the catchers calling the pitches, and I've been searching for a video just like this to help teach him what to call and when. The good news is that he has a couple of 8th grade pitchers who can throw 3-4 different pitches and hit targets. So we're getting into "real" baseball now. Thanks for the great content.

"Sucker see ya later sit down!" as a catcher love that quote, and love getting the swing and miss on ball that starts in the zone and moves out. Also a very safe pitch with 2 strikes, as the batter can't often do damage to a pitch that's out of the zone.

Would love to see videos on; how to throw a change up, slider, or variety of pitches for young pitchers (10-12yr old).
@zachtorncello43253 жыл бұрын
Definitely NOT a slider. At that age, it’s less about movement and more about fast/slow and comfort with the grip. Pitches like curveballs and sliders need move than 42 ft to engage the seams

Never waste a pitch.. Always be in charge, always DICTATE.. I remember throwing in Fall ball at college, and I literally walked my first 3 batters.. I threw majority fast balls and just could not get a strike. I then threw 10 curveballs in a row and got out of the inning. This has never happened to be prior nor again. But I remember it, because as a pitcher I was feeling that panic button starting to happen, and I had to swallow my pride and just get the job done. I believed in my stuff, and just made changes. Threw my best pitch "of the day" until it got touched.. and it never did for that inning. Was able to start over after regrouping.

Hey coach I was thinking about buying the Pitching 365.2 but I was wondering if the other programs that you offer like the Advanced sinker and slider training or the velocity programs are included in the 365.2 program?

So, if am throwing hard and fast. And a couple lucky slow hits get through a hole .well one was actually a slow grounder that found the right center of 2b. Than the following batter I pitched a that jammed him up inside but he was able to get a jammed up pop up that landed right behind 2b in center field. So two living on a prayer swings makes contact basically and now the wanted me to change my pitch. But my fast ball was killing it and still had a lot of steam . What do you do in that scenario
@tymusgraves Жыл бұрын
You can't always control outcomes. The pitcher "won" both of those at bats, even though the hitter got lucky, so stick with it. One exception would be that maybe the location could be better, and you could still throw fastballs with better location and turn weak contact into swing and miss. An underused location that can be easy to get swing and miss is high (between the belt and nipples, depending on the batter's swing). It DOESN'T have to be inside: the problem with up and in is it's not usually a tempting pitch. Up over the middle is much more tempting, just need to make sure it's high enough.

In a conditioning program for pitchers, what do 30's X 8 20's X 4 10's X 4 mean ? I don't know if 30's means distance in yards or something. I'd like to have it clear. I'm a freelance pitching coach living in Venezuela

Good fastball hitters can be late on the fastball the first time and hit a homerun the next time on another fastball. I would def. not always ask for another fastball when he is late. Read the swing. If he's a good fastball hitter and is late. Have him take a look at a off speed pitch outside the strike zone and throw another fastball inside after that one. This way he doesn't get his timing. Also i would suggest using shake off sign as a catcher. Give the batter the idea that the pitcher has more pitches than he is throwing and keep him guessing.

Hey, i was wondering what level you have to play at to get drafted to the majors. I was also wndering how good you have to be to get drafted from the minors to the majors if you can do that.
@alexnegri9216 жыл бұрын
Bryce Currier you're question is weirdly phrased. I'm not sure you understand how the draft works. You get drafted by a team (out of high school or college) and begin in the minor leagues. You work your way up to the majors nobody is drafted directly into a major league team.

At what age does pitchers sign
@manuelwashington6 жыл бұрын
If a hitter is swinging late on a pitch he is thinking I have to be quicker getting to the ball. He mentally is pumped up to hit that next ball like that one . If I was pitcher I wouldn't throw that same pitch unless you recognize he has a poor swing and weak as a hitter . For instance his swing might not be short and quick to the ball. It might be a long swing . So my suggestion is be sure you know hitting mechanics before you make a hard and fast rule that if he is late on the swing of a fast ball Im going to give him another shot at it. Know the hitter and basic hitting mechanics of the player at the plate.

Good talk
@tymusgraves Жыл бұрын
As Troy Percival said when coaching me, hitting is hard. If you have decent velocity and the batter is on time, he MIGHT be pumped up trying to catch up... but he's still not likely to square a ball up the next swing. It's always possible, but it's hard to hit if you aren't on time and getting on time after being late means making significant adjustments. You're still unlikely to be successful on that next swing.

Use the lightning philosophy of never hitting the same spot twice. For the younger guys, work on you location! Mental toughness and watch your body language - the batter loves it when he knows your struggling to hit your marks!
@jeffreyscupham84276 жыл бұрын
So what is your philosophy when going through the order second and third times? Mine is first time threw fastball, Second time curveball, Third time back to fastball. Thanks
@mattpeden18515 жыл бұрын
Jeffrey Scupham man ride that fastball as late into games as possible.. destroy the zone with it expand the zone with it. When it get hit hard then start using your other stuff more regularly

I don't know how many times I have seen coaches call of speed pitches when the batters could not catch up to the fastball and the batter would hit a dinger!

Ball fouled straight back means you are late has a hitter, not on time.
