This is a clients six month old warmblood We are working on several different things here, tying, patience, and behaving for the farrier/trimmer.
I am using "the clip" by smart tie, I have a very thin lead rope attached to it, as a young horse can not pull as hard as a mature horse. This way he will not get into trouble. I also have a hay bag hanging for him to make this a pleasant experience. I spent much time giving him his hoof back before he wanted it, and we also left the stall and tied in the cross ties like a big horse, again using 2 clips and leads for cross ties as to stay safe. He was wonderful! He had previously been having a bad experience with the farrier. I was told her was rearing, and acting up. He only tried to kick me once and that was my first time meeting him when picking up a back leg last month. He was much better my next visit, so we made this appointment for me to get him really good so the farrier does not have a problem on his next visit. A young horse needs many little breaks as he does not realize he can stand on three legs. The more he gets his foot back BEFORE he wants it, the faster he'll trust you to keep it longer. It is also NOT the farriers/trimmers job to train your horse, his job is hard enough. I love to do this training work and I'm happy my client has trusted me with her baby. This was taped 2013
