BTW, what happened with the impala carcass? Did one get the whole piece or most of it? I'm wondering if they weren't playing out (as in "working through" not "pretending") dominant and submissive roles, and the one doing most of the caterwauling was the submissive who *has* to get a smaller piece or even none at all. Which one was mommy hyena grooming at the end? I've read that sometimes mother hyenas give the submissive pup some compensation in the way of extra attention, affection, etc.

They're so pretty! I think there's a point spotted hyenas reach in their adolescence when they look like the most cuddly, pretty things, and gosh, wouldn't it be great if you could have one as a pet...if it weren't for the fact that they're one of the most dangerous predators extant. But then their coats thin out, and their necks grow out of proportion to the rest of their body. Some spotteds manage to remain handsome, and a few stay or become beautiful, but they're definitely a minority. :(
