I am a 68 year old black man who grew up in segregated Mississippi, witnessing the assassinations, on the news of our local, state and national civil rights activists who paid the ultimate price for simply trying to register black voters. I returned home from a military retirement in the mid 1990s with those white people responsible for the deaths of those brave civil rights warriors were still trying to escape accountability from a new generation of prosecutors. I try to explain to young black Americans what MAGA actually means in today’s society. It actually means going back to a time when white Americans controlled everything in our city, state and the federal governments, leaving us to live based on the decisions they made. You can’t go back to a great America if it wasn’t great for you in the first place. I remember the passing of the civil rights act as a kid and wishing it would make a difference in the way we were treated as a people, which was totally second class. We simply had no voice. It’s why l stand in line on the first or second day of early voting, in every election, to make sure we don’t return to the way it was when l was a kid, basically living in fear of the one race of people, looking out mostly for themselves, but who controlled everything in society for everyone else. Our vote is our voice and without a voice you will never be heard.
