Young Military Members & Expensive Cars Explained

In this video I will explain how young military members can purchase a Dodge Charger on pay less than $30K a year. I also explain how a civilian on the same pay could never do this. To be clear, whether you're a military member or civilian, buying a Charger on less than $30K annual pay is diabolical.

You make $1800 a month ONLY IF you live in the dorms. Once you move out you make almost double. And it’s based on what state you live in and what branch you joined. I’m Air Force as a 6 year E-4 living in FL making 5 grand a month after taxes while putting in TSP on top of that. Military life is a discount everywhere we go. Plus we getting a 20% pay raise start of 2025.

This is a very real phenomenon- appreciate you covering it . When we got back from deployment I tried to have my soldiers listen to reason and not blow all their money on new cars. Long story short - the BN barracks parking lot was full of BMWs, Range Rovers etc. After about 3 months every week there would be tow trucks doing repos … 6 months later all the fancy cars were gone. One of my soldiers had a 17% interest rate on his car note . Another bought 2 cars but didn’t have money left over for insurance or basic necessities. (This same soldier didn’t realize he had signed a contract for 6 years of reserve duty after his active commitment)

This video brought back some memories for me. I went in the Army in 1983 as a Private E1, and by mid 1985 at Ft Bliss Texas, I was a Sergeant E5 living in the barracks with all the perks as you mentioned, no kids and very few bills, but making much less money than these soldiers today. And yes, I was that person that went out and bought me a brand new black Saab 900 Turbo and enjoyed life. I remember my monthly car insurance was more than my car note as a 20 year old Sergeant E5...Those were definitely the good old days. Especially when I was driving a much nicer and more expensive car than my company commander 😅😅

Bought a 2001 Ford Explorer in 2000, and you couldn’t tell me nothing. Back then the Mustang was in the E-3 starter pack. My payments were like $465 a month, gas was $1.76 a gallon and I still couldn’t afford it since my insurance was almost $200 a month. My take home after taxes was about $776 biweekly. I’m glad they didn’t have Chargers and Challengers back then, because I would’ve figured out a way. My roommate had to work part time at KFC just to be able to afford a Mazda 929, although he did the full 20 and now pulls six figures as a personal trainer. Back then we didn’t care about eating at the DFAC or hospital cafeteria because we were all from the trenches.

I did 8 years in the Army. I did a study a few years ago comparing the net worth of black vs white military members over their 20 year careers. Between the two groups, generally, even though the incomes and ranks were the same and both groups had the same access to information and programs, one group had a significantly higher credit score and net worth than the other, and your video explains why.

honestly if you're young and dumb and have nothing but a phone bill to pay for. go out and get you that scat if you can make the ends meet! military pays BAS and BAH. plus uniforms, a standard military members should reasonably only have to pay for a phone bill, internet bill and BX cases of beer. if you're making 3000.00 a month figure 300 for internet and phone at the highest levels. if you can manage a $700 used scatpack payment and 300 insurance you still have 1700 beer and gas money! no bdubs every night but you have a nice ride.

THis has been going for a looooong time. When I was juniorE-4 during the Fast and Furious era, we all wanted the cars in the movie. I got a custom 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse, My payment was $500 a month and I would ultimately owe $34,000 on the loan. At that time I lived in the barracks and had no bills and insurance was cheap. Was I broke? Yes, but back then it was either a car note or spend up all my money in TJ or some club over the weekend. People have to understand that a kid straight out of high school just wants to have fun, party, meet girls, and in the late 90s and early 2000s, it didnt cost much to do any of those things. IWe'd have girls over all weekend and all we paid for was the liquor. You can NOT pull that off today, especially if a guy gets some girl pregnant

That’s the thing. Some members have additional incomes, or they have good investments they can pull money from. We don’t know everyone’s financial situation, so there’s always the off chance those young people can actually afford the car. But 9 times out of 10, it’s a bad purchase.
@Yo-gm3le

@@Jodywithawhy you’re right, and the issue of buying cars you can’t afford needs to be changed. Dodge specifically is really feeding this habit because they made it super easy for anyone to go to a dealership sign a high interest loan and walk away with a nice car. So people with lower incomes and poor credit scores wanting to drive a nice car can easily be tricked with the “it only costs x amount up front, and then pay y amount later” Also, could you make a video on what cars to buy for service members at each level of service and how to negotiate car deals? bc I’ve seen and heard too many stories of young servicemen go to the shady car dealerships and get absolutely ripped off for a used money pit of a vehicle. He's not lying about the price I was looking at $900 not including insurance which was 400 as an E-2 I just saved my deployment money and settled for a 06 GMC Envoy Denali it was like 9k and I had money left over for a sub woofer setup.

I’ve always followed one rule: if I can’t pay cash for it twice, I can’t afford it. Never borrow money for a car even if you can make the payments I’ve seen so many of my battle buddies (Army here) blow all of their money on crap they don’t need. I’m not criticizing them for enjoying some of the money, but good god they acted like they had to spend as fast as possible in order to have even a little bit of fun. Like spending money was a competition But I’ll say this: if a service member saves every penny possible for three years and wants to buy a brand new Charger V8 scat pack, if they have enough to pay cash and choose to do so, then have at it

@JodywithaWHY 😂😂😂 U wild boy!!! This isn’t just a military issue. This is reality throughout society! In 2017 Army recruiters tried to sell me by using the 392 scat😂😂😂 I told him my credit sooooo good fuk a 392😂😂😂 I’m good, I still support u boys

As long as you don't buy brand new, you should be fine. But not a Scat. Get a 2015 Challenger RT with good to "okay" miles and put an exhaust on it. Insurance will be cheap as fluff. Or if you really want to save, then just buy an '09-'14 model. Even the SRT8 of those previous years will run you about $15k-$17k. Under 70,000 miles will be in the low $20k's though. I'm not in the military but I did the same thing, but with an "everyday'' car and couldn't afford to keep it. Using better car strategies, I now have a fifth gen Camaro SS. Which cost way less in insurance and the note.

If I’m correct they have to lower any pre existing loan payment you have to under 6% once you join the military …if that is still the case and applies to auto loans as well, then if you buy the car you want before joining they’ll have to lower that 15%+ auto rate to 6%. You’d save a lotta money and still have no living expenses so some ppl might actually do it as a finesse

I joined end of 2022 E3 as of now and buying a new car is definitely doable after joining just gotta have a bit of patience and discipline with your money. I bought my 2023 BRZ for 34k after tax, title, and registration brand new. I also took advantage of the dfac at tech school and not going out a lot spending a lot on food since no matter how much u get at the dfac it’s still coming out your check. At the end of my tech school which was like 5 months I saved almost 15k since basic to put down an 11k DP on the car. At the end when I got the car and went to my first duty station I even had a good amount of money to play around with for new car parts. Also if just like a car guy like myself and really wanted a sports car I promise you’ll find a way to afford it just depends how bad u want it. You don’t need the brand new scat and I’m pretty sure u could probably find a Daytona or maybe an older scat for as much as I paid for my Subaru brz. My buddy did the same thing with a used bmw 440 for 36k.

It is possible. I had to buy a duplex to make it happen. Our mortgage is $2240 a month. I rent out a 1 bedroom for $1250. That leaves $990 due on mortgage. My wife pays $495 and I pay $495 for a massive 3 bedroom. It works but tenants have now been late on rent 3 months in a row so it’s risky but it works

If you can't buy 4 with cash you can't afford one, that is my rule. I have 3 vehicles, and when I bought each one I could buy 4 of each one with cash. But hey, keep having car payments and give your money to the bank if you want so the bank can pay me interest.

While I agree that the military should have a financial literacy program. Have you been in the military? When I was in the military we had BAQ, separate rations, and COLA(cost of living adjustment pay) for those of us who just happened to be assigned to bases/units that didn’t have adequate housing. Those who live on base are not paying rent, electricity, medical bills and the family medical was covered also. I’m not saying service members should run out and get expensive cars, nah, save and invest. But you are capping just a little.

Shit when i was in I bought 2012 Charger 392 with 7miles on dash cost me 42k when I was an E-4. Definitely wasn't broke. BUUT I just got off an year deployment from Afghanistan, lived in Germany where the COLA pay was insane, No kids, no bills, I was rolling in it. Remind you we kept our COLA and still got our hazard pay and it was tax-free. went from E-2-E-4 during and was averaging 2700 a month. I had about 24k in the bank coming back. Then had another year in Germany still getting 2k a month saved maybe 500 each check. Went back to the states dropped 10k and had NFCU financed the rest. That's the only reason it was easy for me, don't know how these slick sleeve privates doing that shit now.

THere are a lot of Girls that see them Millitary guys as a way to get out of house and situation they live in, all kinds of girls around the barracks and clubs, just being able to get into housing or an apartment that could be nicer then she has ever had lived in, plus furnish it. Shop at the commisary, she wont mind him with the expensive car loan for the car she will most likely start driving, and she may have a roster of guys who can help with the other bills. BUt seriously, there are realationships that do work out and the couples retire from the millitary.

My car insurance even with history is 390 damn near $400 and that's with USAA. I would've just been on my moms but I'm in a different state so I'm unable to. i'd say just learn how to budget properly don't get no crazy expensive car. Do that when you like E5/E6 even then you don't (need) no crazy car. You just need something to get from A-B, but 🤷🏾‍♂️

2009, Ft. Carson, Colorado. We JUST got back from Iraq. We all sitting on a FAT stack of money cause we been deployed for a year. The new Mustang, Camero, and Challenger JUST came out. I'm in need of a car cause I'm 20, living on an Army base, and gotta get around. I listen to my mom and dad and go car shopping with my NCO (non-commissioned officer). I luck up on a Mazda Protege 5 for about 9k. Tell me why I get back on base only to see more muscle cars than Fast and Furious, Transformers, and Need for Speed franchises combined on base? Now mind you, it's summer. Mfs are out in full effect flexing. By winter, the base is half empty, and tow trucks are sliding every single night, snatching cars left and right cause mfs can't keep up on them high ass payments! Moral of the story, just cause you can don't mean you shouldm

Speak for yourself… I was a sgt in San Diego making 3800 every 2 weeks (since got out) and had an e commerce business netting 4-8k monthly depending on the month. That didn’t include my wife’s income as well. Just because someone is in uniform doesn’t mean they’re broke… also not everyone is single and living in the barracks.

Outside the military, it is also true that not everyone decides to first purchase a home, then move on to starting a big endeavor via having kids first. Instead, in this era, renting a home and living via paycheck to paycheck is shaky enough decision in the checks and balances department. Renting is for college bound or single individuals who have a plan moving forward in life. Someone owning a house next to a beach or other forms of " success" always includes keeping an eye on ones checks and balances. Some are rich and broke at the same breath just to keep his or her appearance in their respective endeavors. Good day now.

Very good video🫡🫡🫡. Great breakdown👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻. Ironically! Civilians are doing the same thing as well. Very sad though! In a very pathetic way. People are not humble anymore. It’s like people are living in a competition. People get themselves into things that they cant afford at all, just for looks and vanity. And than! Their homes are literarily falling apart. 😔😳😮. I am a latino from north jersey. I used to live in the bronx for 20 years. And you see that type of behavior a-lot with latinos. Great video. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻❤️❤️❤️

I seen marines having trx money but can’t afford the maintenance 😂😂 people are deceived by the fact that they can’t afford it. I had a guy come to me before that the extended warranty should pay for all 4 tires and I told him it doesn’t work like that. If he has 1 nail that can’t be fixed on the tire then and it’s 4x4 which is the trx btw we have to basically price out 4 tires depending on the tread. The dude needed further explanation how the extended warranty works.
