For a young couple just starting out, Adam and Tia Natal were doing okay. They rented a modest apartment in Newark and lived within their means. Adam worked as a manager at a rug-cleaning franchise, while Tia stayed home with their two boys, Gerald and Benjamin. But when Adam lost his job, it was only so long that they could live on their savings. They never thought they would need public assistance, but a few months ago, the Natals were placed at Harmony House, a transitional housing complex in Newark run by the community development organization New Community Corp. They are just one of many families struggling with the recession, but with access to a private apartment, daycare and job training, landing at Harmony House has been instrumental in getting the couple back on their feet.
