Yes. Loved it. It wrecked me too, the ending. Am hoping for a resolution in season 2 that is happy. Totally want the whole 9 yards for Wilhem and Simon - and f*ck the monarchy. As a mum, I see the queens behavior as abusive - she didn't support her son or address his trauma at all. It obviously didn't occur to her either that throwing Simon under the bus is going to bite her. Wilhelm isn't stupid, and it was never just a fling - he certainly made that clear to her already.

It was a stroke of creative genius to have Wilhelm look DIRECTLY down the lense of the camera. Not only does it shake up the viewer, it’s one of the few moments that Wilhelm can shed his crown prince 👑 persona.

It’s such a good cinematic bookend to the series. To do a recall and have him start the series with a look straight down the camera and again in the last shot is genius. Also they mirrored the scene in the first episode of Wilhelm first seeing Simon sing in church and their smiles and then in the church in the last episode of mirrors it except no one is smiling and it’s so tense and the mood is completely different. Just a few examples of the attention to detail in the series. I could go on and on about the cinematography of this series is so stellar and nuanced.

I think the ending was perfect - the fact he didnt care about people seeing him hugging Simon alredy means he changed his mind about being secret, Simon can't say it back cause it will put him back in being a secret. The ending was good for a single season while leaving open some conflicts to be resolved on a second season.

There are two times during the season where the song Revolution is in the show. The first one when Simon goes to the football field to rescue Wilhelm, before they sleep together, and the second at the end of the show, after he tells Simon he loves him. This gives me kind of hope. It seems that changes are going to be made and he could stand up against his mother. 🤞🏼🤞🏼

Wilhelm and Simon's journey is an absolute treasure! Not to take away from Simon's crush, but Wilhelm definitely feel it deepest from the very start. He falls not just because Simon is BEAUTIFUL, but because when he sings it's from the heart. Having grown up as the scapegoat second son in a world of flattering, fakery and facades, Wilhelm IMMEDIATELY notices. He desperately craves genuine emotions, genuine validation from someone who is their genuine, authentic self, and Simon is that 100%. Simon starts liking him when Wilhelm actually introduced himself, (no one else has bothered to). Then Wilhelm mirrors Simon's authenticity right back, telling him he likes what he said in class. So they both fall for the emotional honesty they find in the other, adding chemistry in the "oh wow I really want to kiss him" final scene of episode 1. Simon isn't afraid to speak truth to power, and he never lets Wilhelm get away with any of his privilege and hierarchy bs. Being held accountable for his own actions starts an avalanche of emotional growth in Wilhelm. For someone as starved of love, affection and validation as Wilhelm, Simon's the emotional impact on him is massive. His honest feelings for Simon is a stark contrast to all the fake flattering and lies of his peers, not to mention the cold, calculated manipulation of his emotionally abusive mother. Simon has a different journey. He learns to let go of his saviour complex that is a symptom of the trauma his addict dad put him through. His growth is that of enforcing healthy boudaries that doesn't force him to compromise his authentic self. And when he finally does, it's both painful and empowering. I love how every time Simon enforces a boundary with Wilhelm, Wilhelm loses him until he grows emotionally by admitting his feelings to himself and to Simon. He lost him first just from the tiny boundary of Simon not accepting the pain of being friends with someone you have a crush on because you hope they will change their mind. Wilhelm's feelings for Simon evolves along with his emotional growth. Every loss leads to stronger feelings and needing more courage to admit those feelings. He faces the loss of Simon three times, every time from lack of courage to be his authentic self. As he takes a new step on the journey of emotional growth leading to his authentic self, he returns to Simon until Simon enforces his own boundaries. BUT - he is emotionally manipulated into the last loss by his mother. And then the season ends with him admitting what he feels. It's a step on the way, but not yet the massive growth he has to achieve in order that Simon may want a relationship with him. 3rd time does it right? It's fairytale number magic, meaning there can't be more on and offs between Wilhelm and Simon. Not without Simon compromising his healthy new boundaries. I'm so impressed with the writers, directors and actors who together created such a profound and genuine journey of emotional growth for both Wilhelm and Simon. I'm very curious about what level of emotional growth Simon will accept from Wilhelm before they get back together. I do hope for 3 seasons, but not if it takes a whole season apart for Wilhelm to grow REVOLUTIONary courage lol. Cus I'm here for a November REVOLUTION!

it’s just so sad that Wilhelm has no one - no family he can trust, brother dead, betrayed by his mother, & he estranged himself from Simon. Like, for a teenager, so traumatic. At least Simon has a loving/ caring mum and friends etc.

Here is a quote by Lisa Ambjörn, YR's creator and head writer from her most recent interview she did in early May, while finishing up filming of Season 2: "Usually, you use the tension between characters to build up the story... Between Simon and Wilhelm we worked so much on building a positive balance and taking any power factor away. We wanted to show another kind of relationship between two boys who fall in love with each other without sexualising it or exploiting it to create drama. There are many nuances between Simon and Wilhelm, but there is no manipulation, no power games, no using one another. Each struggles with their inner demons and the world they are in, but it's not a struggle between them. In the emotional space they built together, they are equals and they give each other the chance to exist beyond forms."
@gerganakantcheva81762 жыл бұрын
To be fair, denying his presence in the video was the only way to reclaim privacy, make the press back off from Simon and make the video worthless by making it a video of two random teens and not the future King and his lover. And Wilhelm never really put much effort into hiding his affection for Simon in school, he just really dreads the additional media scrutiny. Wilhelm's brother died a couple of weeks ago and Wilhelm suddenly became the future King. He's not even prepared for that, he needs serious grief councelling and help with his anxiety disorder. And his mother used Erik and his legacy as Crown Prince to guilt Wilhelm into doing what she wanted, without telling him that she knew it was August at that point already, because he wouldn't have made the statement if he knew, so the Royal Family wouldn't be able to sweep it under the rung.
@veronikahaugendrageid26622 жыл бұрын
I literally screamed YEEESS when Alex used the word manipulative about the queen. So many people already struggle to recognise emotionally abusive parents. Yet so many excuse it because it's the royal family?!? It's not like abuse isn't traumatising just because you're royal. Quite the reverse, it makes support and help even harder to come by. Here's a short list of the queen's abusive behaviours: Making unreasonable demands Expecting you to share their opinions (i.e., you are not permitted to have a different opinion) Refusing to accept your feelings by trying to define how you should feel Refusing to acknowledge or accept your opinions or ideas as valid Accusing you of being selfish, needy, or materialistic if you express your wants or needs (the expectation is that you should not have any wants or needs) Nitpicking at your clothes, hair, work, and more (The queen nitpicks his nail biting) Manipulating and controlling you by making you feel guilty; giving you a guilt trip Using your fears, values, compassion, or other hot buttons to control you or the situation Punishing you by withholding affection or giving you the silent treatment Acting like they are always right, know what is best, and are smarter than you Controlling who you see or spend time with, including friends and family Treating you like a possession or property Trivializing the other person's concerns Criticizing Shaming or blaming Withholding affection and attention Source: www.verywellmind.com/identify-and-cope-with-emotional-abuse-4156673 Poor Wilhelm is eaten up by anxiety. People may be unaware, but anxiety is a symptom of CPTSD, in other words, it's a consequence of trauma. Whilhelm's family is the major cause of all his mental health problems. Here is what emotional abuse does to us: "Research indicates that the consequences of emotional abuse are just as severe as those of physical abuse. Except, instead of physical marks and bruises, your wounds are invisible to others-hidden in the self-doubt, worthlessness, and self-loathing you may feel. When emotional abuse is severe and ongoing, you can lose your entire sense of self. Over time, the accusations, verbal abuse, name-calling, criticisms, and gaslighting can erode your sense of self so much that you can no longer see yourself realistically. Consequently, you may begin to agree with the abuser and become internally critical. Once this happens, you become trapped in the abusive relationship, believing that you will never be good enough for anyone else. Eventually, you may pull back from friendships and isolate yourself, convinced that no one likes you. What's more, emotional abuse can cause a number of health problems. Mental health effects of abuse include depression, anxiety, and sometimes the development of an eating disorder. Being abused emotionally can also impact you physically, causing you to develop stomach ulcers, heart palpitations, and insomnia." It's trauma baby, and it's serious stuff. Don't excuse it just because people are rich and powerful. Oh and lastly, I'm sure some of you recognise their parent(s) in the queen. I see you. I love you. You never deserved any of it. You're worthy of love. Safe hugs

@@jo5546 Exactly! He's 16 and a minor and as we saw in episode 1 his family can still make decisions for him, so they could still take him out of school and have him schooled privately at the palace to have better control over him. Also, the Royal Family has a business-like structure, his mother was never just his mother, she's the reigning Queen and now that he's Crown Prince she is basically Wilhelm's boss, he is her Trainee, who she has to prepare to take over from her as the future King. And that sentence Wilhelm said in his speach about his brother "It feels so wrong that I'm still here instead of him" is still haunting and relevant, that wasn't that long ago, it was actually in the same episode the video was made...

Edwin, the director and the writer have all said, Wilhelm’s problem isn’t that he is gay, it’s that he is a Prince. And I think that sums it up pretty well. If he was not royalty barely anyone would care. Sweden is an extremely accepting and LGBTQ+ safe country. Even when Wilhelm is outed on the show, none of the students really comment negatively about it all, instead they talk about how weird it was that someone was taking that video from outside his window and how it might be more complicated to produce an heir but no one really cares that he is gay. If he wasn’t a prince I doubt it would be a problem at all and he would just have a relationship with Simone. It’s this public figure, royalty, duty to his country plot that really causes the problems. It’s great writing and storytelling and I love all the nuances and added subplots and social commentaries they also added to the show. It tackles a lot of really important subjects and conversations.

12:58 in Swedish he said "Vad fan ska vi göra?" with emphasis on fan. Fan is can be translated to damn or hell so he said "What the *hell* are we going to do?" Not much of a difference but still, I would have put it in the subtitles. 23:04 in Swedish "Hur fan kan du kräva det av mig?" the direct translation is "How the hell can you demand that from me?" It sounds much harsher than "How can you even ask me to do that?" and it's not like Simon demanded him to do anything so I just feel it's worse than "how can you even ask..."

At first, I just watched the show over and over. I’ve watched it so many times that I know ever single look and nuance in the show. Then I graduated to watching reactions because the only thing that comes close to watching it for the first time, it watching someone else watch it for the first time. And there are certain scenes that I specifically enjoy seeing reactions to. The biggest is Wilhelm’s final look at the camera. I’ve seen so many different interpretations to it. I agree with you in your interpretation. He’s about to tear shit up. His look is defiant and the song in the background is saying ‘the city’s on fire but it’s beautiful’. He’s about to burn shit down. I can’t wait.

I always enjoy watching people’s reactions to Wilhelm’s last words to August, the revelation that the queen knew, Simon’s break up speech and then Wilhelm’s look to the camera, not necessarily in that order. All so well written and acted.

What I love and think is an outstanding insight is when Simone inadvertently meets the Queen! WOW! What a scene by both the Queen and Simone, neither expecting to meet the other! I believe Simone finally realizes he is in love with a Prince! The Queen meets the boy that is causing such a commotion. It’s a revealing scene. Simone not knowing what to do tries to courtesy, not knowing if he should since she is the mother of his boyfriend and not a Queen! His mind must be going in circles! Her mind must be analyzing his status and how to shape him if things become really serious! It’s a very well done simple scene. Bravo.

Ah, you’ve finally made it to the finale. It has been so wonderful reliving the show through your eyes and your reactions. I’m so glad that you’ve loved it and saw as much depth, nuance, and beauty in the show that we fans love. This show consistently catches people off guard, I think, in its ability to use common story tropes but still complicate them and combine them in really interesting and effective ways. This show absolutely got under my skin when I watched it, and it has been so fun interacting with fans in the community and seeing people’s reactions. I watched it in May, but like you, I’m grateful I don’t have to wait quite as long as everyone who watched it over a year ago. Because even this wait has been hard. A few parting thoughts: The head writer and director have pointed out that it’s no accident that the very first image we see after Wille hangs up on the queen is a match being struck. The fire has been lit inside him, and like you posited, he’s ready to eff things up. He absolutely feels betrayed and alone, and he knows he was manipulated into turning against the person who truly loved and accepted him. I truly believe we will see him attempt to right that wrong in S2. As someone else said, it also feels like no accident that Revolution was played in that final scene, as well as the football field scene in E4 when Wille has said that everyone else is fake, but his feelings for Simon aren’t fake. Finally, thank you for pointing out the incredible chemistry between Edvin & Omar as well as the attention to intimacy in this series. They used an intimacy coordinator, Sara, and I respect that work that she and other ICs are doing. It truly made everything so believable in this show - so relatable - and it made the actors themselves feel safe and supported to have that intimacy and vulnerability. Both actors have said multiple times that the intimate scenes were practiced, choreographed, even, and that it was like a dance. They knew how it would go, and they had done trust and consent exercises each and every time. It’s beautiful, and I hope the industry uses it as a standard. Thanks for sharing your reactions. S2 is going to be so incredible….I can’t wait!

Very well said! I wrote a thing about how Wilhelm's emotional growth of courage to be his authentic self is linked to every time he has to face the emotional consequences of rejecting Simon. Wilhelm has rejected him 3 times, and that is a number often used in storytelling. Simon has taken him back only twice, meaning he can't take him back anymore without compromising his own emotional growth vs heanthy boundaries, until Wilhelm has found the courage to be his authentic self and stand up against his emotionally abusive mother. For someone who grew up in normal families, it's really hard to understand the massive challenge it is to stand up to abusive parents, especially when they are as manipulative as the queen. It's like being afraid of heights and spiders and having to constantly bungeejump into a massive nest of spiders. I'm guessing it will take a while for Wilhelm to find that courage. Anger helps, but he also needs a strategy and allies. Some way to come out, for Simon to trust him again. Hopefully fast-ish, not sure I can endure a whole season of pining lol.

Thank you guys for watching this series, you gasped in all the right places. I agree with several of the folks here, this was the perfect ending. Partially for the sake of season 2 but also because it was what Wilhelm thought he had to do and, in some respect, it protected Simon because if it wasn't Wilhelm in the video, in two weeks no-one would care. But also, the final breaking of the forth wall bookended the breaking in episode one where Wilhelm says, in effect, you insist on watching me, fine now watch what I do. And we were hooked. What a magnificent series. The writing, the acting, the cinematography, all amazing. They are winning awards left and right. And special congratulations to the two principal actors. Edvin Ryding who plays Prince Wilhelm as been acting in Swedish TV and film since he was five, and, most particularly, Omar Rudberg who plays Simon as this was his acting debut (although he is a quite famous Swedish singer/dancer). Of no particular consequence, my opinion of the moral of this piece (and I think Sara's behavior proves it) is that privilege corrupts everything.

I've been waiting for this reaction! This whole series, I think the theme of each episode was... "it can't get any worse!" narration: it got worse. I totally agree that the chemistry between WIlhelm and Simon is some of the best ever between any couple, especially portraying a young, new couple. Both Young Royals and Heartstopper (perfect comparison/contrast btw) utilize intimacy coaches, and I love that they 1. go through day by day what the scene will entail, 2. ensure consents as that can change daily and even if it's for work/acting, and 3. help portray realistic feelings. Emotionally for Wilhelm, there is so much. He's lived so many years in a royal family, with expectations, responsibilities, and restrictions. Living his entire life in this comfort/shackle, he subconsciously expected for everything to work out without much effort or sacrifice, and he got a real dose of reality when Simon challenged this expectation. I was getting really concerned when he was dealing with losing Simon, then finding out about August, then finding out about his mother. The silence when he hung up as his mother continued talking about royalty, monarchy, and legacy was DEAFENING! ::applause:: And then you could feel his hopelessness and then it cut to a church with candles... I WAS DEAD. I think US and maybe UK based shows are used to happy endings, wrapped up seasons, sometimes with a cliffhanger, but there is closure, and shows like this are turning heads because it's not the norm. For Simon, I was in tears at the end for him. He spent this season fighting for and back against many things but when he met up with Wilhelm this episode he sounded so defeated and with not wanting to be anyone's secret. And when Wilhelm said I love you, he made a big statement not saying it back but wishing a nice Christmas. And I want to just mention that in their POV, August doesn't know that Felice figured out it was his phone, and he still may think it's Sara, which will contribute to the drama next season! Thanks for your reactions for this show! I love finding content with you guys or just before you guys because you guys are wonderful to watch!

I’ve been checking for this video daily! Im so glad you both loved this series. I can not wait for season 2. I think the fact that they used the same song for the final scene that was used in the soccer field scene was perfection and the fact that Wilhelm looks at the camera exactly when it says “revolution” in the song makes me think he is going to be exactly who he wants in season 2 and he won’t care about how it effects the monarchy! At least I hope that’s the case!!

When I first watched this finale, I was terrified Wilhelm was going to try to hurt himself. Throughout the entire first season he seems to be in a near constant state of distress to the point where he's in physical pain, but when everything was at its worst, he was uncharacteristically calm and collected. The moment with Simon at the very end seemed to carry a finality with it. He essentially lost everyone within the span of a few months, Erik's death, August's betrayal, and his parents' decision to protect their image (AND AUGUST!!!) over their son.

@@82evene Breaking the 4th wall like that is always on purpose. One angle is that the looks serve to make us feel like we are a no better than the hungry mass invading his privacy forcing him to lie, to live a fake life - we also watched his intimate moments, we also stole his privacy, now when he stares at us how does it feel to be watched like that? Another dimension is the purpose of each stare vs his personal growth. The first was a look of I know you see me. But he has no agency, he was forced by his parents to tell us a bunch of lies. The second look was a look with a purpose, like, I know you see me and I'm taking back the narrative, the power, I'll write my own story now. He is no longer reacting to events, he is taking control: He chose to hug Simon. He probs hoped tha semi public event was enough to win Simon but nope. So he's even more heartbroken and ANGRY, an anger that he shares while staring right back at us giving us a taste of our own medicine, while REVOLUTION is revealing his own intentions. He wants a revolution in how we see him, so he can be his authentic self, free to love whoever he wants. There now you can write an essay about it lol.

I love so much this series. Even thought the show is about a gay male couple, as a straight girl I could relate to Willhem ansiety, and in general, first love, young love, which is universal. I confess, I put off watching this because I didn’t want your watch videos to be over. But I had to come watch it when I saw they released the open of season 2 today. (!!!) I agree that I’m hopeful about the ending - his look at the camera reads ‘burn the world down’ to me and I really hope we see that strength and belief in himself (and simon) in season 2. The head writer/creator has talked about the transition between Wilhelm hanging up on his mom and the candles being lit in the church as him having that fire lit within him. I’m sure a million other comments mention having queer folks in the production - there were many, both in front of and behind the camera. And the intimacy coordinator they worked with was SO AMAZING at getting those intimate scenes down solid. I’m so so glad you watched it, and can’t wait for season 2 to come out!

You are right they deserve a bit of happiness. They are the victims of a privacy violation, and the queen makes Wille feels he has to apologize for it. She has no empathy at all, and just deny him as a person. The locker scene is precious. I feel as you say, they are mature for 16, I feel because of the family weight both of them carry....they grew faster. But unfortunately your thought about adult advise is foreshadowing the one that will be followed by Wille, wrongly I feel. Oh your "snake sound" towards August should be part of a best off! Hilarious. In the car I believe she makes him understand it would be a betray towards his family to expose his "unfortunate romance"...because well Wille is not allowed to Love, love doesn't matter for his royal life.Sad... For me, the final hug was Wille's promise to find a way to be together in both of them terms. I agree for the look of revolution. But if the series is still realistic, a 16 years old boy won't realistically fight the monarchy! With time and patience he can update it eventually when he will be adult and in charge. But now I don't see a simple solution. A bitter sweet ending true. I feel the privacy-public issue for Wille was rushed by the cruel exposure, but the subject would have happened at one point anyway. He is not allowed to have this relation ship. He has to confront the fact that his desires being in opposition to his duties, as you said he realized it. I confirm, part of the team is queer (trans, gay). Also the series portrays a lost teen (at its extreme), and this topic of being lost is quite universal right. For me, the show is recognized for the intimacy, the emotion and authenticity. They have just won the Swedish award of the series of the year, they won the couple on screen and the script at the Swedish gay gala too, and the best show in Brazil. Yeah I remember viewers telling that they were heart broken by Young royals, then were healed by heart stopper just after. Sort of complementary maybe. What I feel about the ending? I feel Wille and Simon need to team up more, to share information to solve issues. And they also need to stop listening to the bad advises from their families, Sara for Simon, and Kristina for Wille. I feel that Wille should only come out at his own rhythm (if he is allowed to...), and that Simon is in right to refuse a relation with a closet person. Still they care for each other, but have a very different life in terms of freedom. I feel just a bit hopeful for a season 2 "resolution" as you call it, but not too much. For 3 reasons, it is a bittersweet/realistic series, the writer said we will hate her, and the main actor said reading the script / his Wille character part "why why?" about Wille future decisions/actions...so not very hopeful, but we'll see I guess. Watch you in November with pleasure, thanks a lot for the very funny and thoughtful ride.

They went out in the streets interviewing teenagers to figure out how they talk, what they do, how they socialize and most of the script is improvised.
@erikperhs_2 жыл бұрын
Look at the situation through the Queen's eyes. Your 16 year old son has a crush and he wants to threaten the whole monarchy because of that crush. He wants to come out as a gay prince, when in reality he can't handle even that little bit of attention he got from the leaked video. On top of that, you also had a crush like that when you were a teen and it quickly faded away, as it happens with 99% of teenage romances. "Is it worthy it?" was the question she asked him. Meaning, "will you really follow this route and face international controversy for a crush you may forget about next month?" and I think that's a very valid question in this situation! As the queen AND as a mother, she can't just encourage him to do whatever he wants without considering if he's gonna be able to handle the backlash, specially knowing he already suffers from anxiety.
