The judge in Young Thug's RICO trial punished a woman for taking a trip to the Dominican Republic instead of showing up for jury selection. Rather than hold the woman in contempt, Judge Ural Glanville assigned her a 30-page essay on the importance of jury duty that is due in three weeks.

@@ra2186 That you hate writing is irrelevant. Most folks hate the idea of going to jail so they do what they can to avoid it even if it means doing something else they don't like to do. It's called compromise. Going to jail could result in even more negative things occurring such as losing your employment, losing your residence because you didn't pay the rent on time because you'd rather go to jail than to be the responsible adult and take your lumps like a grown up. If you do nothing wrong there's no recompense. Those who would give up a little liberty (freedom) for a little safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. --Ben Franklin

@@myobdatt That's the thing about the public record. His ego would have demanded either she retract what she wrote or he hold her in contempt for essentially following his directions. Either way she could have exposed his dim-witted sentence. There are too many people who will willingly serve jury duty to have to resort to punishing those who clearly don't want to be there and would probably undermine an accused person's defense (or disregard evidence of guilt) by resenting the expectation. Either way, the essay would have had to be documented, whether he liked it or not.

WOW I once ignored a jury duty to appear because I have anxiety and panic attacks - well I got a notice to appear in person to explain why I didn’t show up. I brought a doctors note and the judge called me up to the bench and asked why I didn’t show up and I burst into tears and couldn’t talk just handed him the note. He was so nice and said don’t cry young lady I’m gonna put you on the permanent no jury list so I won’t have to go through this again… EDIT: THE JUDGE IN THIS CASE IS INSANE… I was blessed to have an understanding judge - at the time I barely left my house - I didn’t cry on purpose I am a very emotional person…

First, you never have a right to ignore a Jury Notice, young lady. Second, ppl make lame excuses ALL the time so, Judges are usually skeptical and rightfully so. Finally, if you have anxiety and panic attacks as bad as you claim. Where a simple question a ten year old could answer makes you cry. Then how do you have the courage to tell the Whole world on the internet? Which will always open you up to criticism. Makes zero sense to me.

I get the importance of jury duty, but this seems kinda extreme considering she did try to take the proper steps to notify the court. When there is no punishment for people looting, carjacking, or stealing up to $1,000 of someone else's private property but if you miss jury duty you have to go through this? Nah

It's punishable of up to $1,000 and around a month in jail, this most certainly will go on the females criminal record as well, which is why the judge asked if the juror went to college. If your a nurse, teacher etc. with jail of that sort on your record that will prohibit you from progressing in that field or completely seize your career in that field all together. This was a great and fair deal.

A good citizen would have been willing to do her duty like all the rest of us who are called upon to serve on a jury. What would happen if everyone called for jury service decided they had something more important to do? If you go to court, wouldn't you want to be judged by a jury of your peers, not a jury of ne'er do wells that they can get to show up to court because they had nothing better to do with their time. I am not meaning to sound harsh or anything, just explaining that it is important for all of us that our system of justice be taken seriously and not break down. Regards!

@@BeeVan-YT On the contrary, she was not being treated like a criminal. The very fact that the judge did not send her to jail for 30 days and fine her $1000, which would have been the sentence for a crime but rather gave her the opportunity to redress her wrongdoing in a much more dignified way without anything going on her record, proves my point. What would you have had the judge do in order to set an example that reminds people how important jury duty is and that skipping it is not without penalty? To address your other remark, I rarely comment on KZbin videos, and I certainly don't comment on a video without watching it first in its entirety. Again...regards!
