More About This Video: We are definitely in the rainy season here, so many of my points are very seasonal/weather-specific. It might also be because I am literally cold while writing this post. Although the things I mentioned have made me think twice about my life here in Ecuador, my thoughts have only made me more resilient and excited to continue my journey here. I cannot wait to explore this beautiful place more as things warm up over the coming months.

Living in Cuenca for almost three years, rent is way less expensive here as opposed to Texas (for example). I have a two-year lease on an unfurnished 3/3.5/1 contemporary condo in a building in nice neighborhood with elevator and underground secure garage, for less than $600 including wifi internet, gas, water, condo fee (add electricity $25-30)! Average price around here. In Dallas it would be near $2000!

We pay $2355 rent for a single wide, 800 sf mobile home built in 1985. It's falling apart and has mold and other issues. Your Texas place sounds attractive compared to our place on the Monterey Peninsula, Central Coast ,California. But it's pretty here. The climate here sounds similar to Cuenca and Quito but everything is green here!

I lived in Cuenca for a month many years ago and it was funny listening to the first segment of your video, because I noted the same things: gloomy, constantly changing weather, how cold it was indoors and the need for multiple wool blankets to sleep, and the altitude! Walking up stairs took me out. Wishing y'all all the best!

Scratching my chin about this video. I am surprised that you guys were surprised by the weather. Also, this is the first video I have seen (out of hundreds) that does not indicate it is much cheaper to live Ecuador than the USA. Friends I have living there full time all talk about how inexpensive it is, and while I have only spent a month there I found it to be very inexpensive as well. So, your video was surprising to me. I found that buying things at Mega Maxi was more expensive than I thought - but when we bought at the Mercado or Tias - it was much cheaper. Maybe clothes, shoes and furniture are not very cheap? I bet disposable diapers are more expensive(?). And it is clear that electronics are not cheap. But there are many who leave the US and live on Social Security down there - not an easy feat in the US. Would you consider a video on your monthly expenses?
@TheJazzyNation1

Hey John, thank you so much for watching my video! I appreciate your support. As stated in this video, I had never traveled to Ecuador before. I haven’t even traveled in the region, so I’ve experienced many new things since living here. Honestly, some of the information that was out there concerning the weather wasn’t in a form that was relatable to me, so I did not do as much research as others would have, which is why I made this video for people like me. You mention that you have friends living in Ecuador. Where exactly do they live, or did they live? Where did you live? I live in Quito, somewhat closer to the mountains and some volcanoes, so we are pretty high up in elevation. I assumed the climate in Quito would be similar to that in Cumbaya, about 30 minutes away. But that has not been the case. And although yes, the weather has been surprising to me, I am adjusting, and I am still enjoying my time here in Ecuador, so I don’t see the weather as a negative thing. It’s just something I wish I had known before arriving so I could be better prepared. As I stated in this video, items for my family might be more expensive because we are not drastically changing our habits. This means we are not shopping at local markets for our everyday needs. We are shopping at big box stores where prices are, in fact, standard or a little bit more than what we are used to in Colorado, which is where we are from. We have previously also lived in Washington, DC, and I would say prices in the DC, Virginia area are, in fact, comparable, if not higher, than they are here in Quito, Ecuador. So I would say we would not base our cost of living on more expensive states in the United States; we are going based on what our cost of living is in Colorado. So this is based on my and my family's experience. I wouldn’t say it encompasses the experience of all expats living in Ecuador for a month to many years. I’d be curious to hear more perspectives from other people as well. In regard to sharing our monthly expenses at this time, I probably won’t do a video like that, but you can check out my grocery haul video that I recently put on my channel. It details how much we spend in two weeks at a big box store like Super Maxi, and if you double that, that is about how much we spend on food for a month. Thank you again for stopping by. I hope this was helpful.

Hello there, saludos from Portoviejo! Not sure if I’m the only one who thinks “saludos” sounds so much more normal than “greetings” lol Anyways a few things, first I’ve been hearing a lot about Quito’s weather just being so random. Like a video I saw where it was 1PM and it was sunny, at 3 it got dark, and then like half an hour later it just rained like crazy. The second thing, I’m actually surprised it’s cold, my dad was there when it supposedly was/got cold and he went all prepared and when he came back he was like “it was hoooot”. Maybe that’s due to the randomness of the weather and he just so happened to get the “warmer days” but still something I thought I should say. And third, the cost of living is hit or miss because it depends on your lifestyle and the city you’re in. I kinda feel like Quito is definitely a more expensive city and then depending on where you shop it’ll definitely cost more for some things, that’s why my dad is always bargain hunting in mercados and such and even I look for the sweeter deals in comisariato instead of buying in supermaxi, tho the difference between those two isn’t much compared to mercados. It also depends on what you’re coming with, like if you come with a retirement pension and live in a cheap coastal city then it’s gonna be cheap and paradise but if you come and have to work jobs here then it’s gonna feel equally expensive and maybe worse because the pay isn’t the best here. But yeah too much ranting from my part lol, as for a video idea if you ever want to collab, maybe compare Portoviejo and Quito let me know! 👏🏼

The weather there sounds like Chicago! We often joke that if you don't like the weather just wait, because it's going to change. I am from Quito living in Europe, that is why they say Quito is like women’s character, changing all the time. In one day you have 4 seasons, spring in the morning, summer at noon, autumn in the afternoon and winter at night. I had to come to Europe to know what real cold was, however Quito can be chilly, and don’t forget, Ecuador has 2 seasons, dry and rainy, so in rainy season, rains everyday and it is the biggest rain ever either you are in the Amazon, Sierra or Costa. I think Galapagos has different weather in general. If you like Quito but expect warmer, go to live in the surrounding valleys like Cumbayá few minutes drive. Houses in Quito Dont need heater or a/c, when it is chilly wear warmer. If you use heater you will start to sweat. Any house has heater. When it is warmer open all windows with the breeze it is enough and light clothes.

For us, rent is comparable to what we would pay for an apartment in the U.S. But it is not an expense we calculate monthly because it is covered as a part of my husband's job. We have not had any major medical experiences here. When we've been to the doctor for minor treatments, we've submitted claims to our insurance in the U.S.

I live in the same climate (Seaside, Ca) on the Monterey Peninsula. Except that we can't make it here. In this area 50k is poor. Double that to scrape by. The median rent here is $2600 mo and the median price for a house is 800k.

@TheJazzyNation1 Hola. I do like it here but I don't like the weather a lot of the time. The climate isn't exactly the same as what you mentioned but similar. I should have been more precise. Our temperature is 50-70 degrees Fahrenheit all year round, with some exceptions. September and October frequently have warmer weather. But it is often foggy here and damp and cold in the mornings and foggy nights with biting wind. Usually, it's overcast except for a few hours in the afternoons. Kinda depressing to me, but many people like it here on the coast. Many foreigners like it too since it's well known, with places like Pebble Beach, Carmel, and Big Sur, and one of the reasons why it's so expensive. But we do have microclimates here. And it's not constantly raining like Seattle or even as bad as Portland, but It's still not warm enough for me. I think 75-85 degrees would be perfect every day. At least it never snows! Thanks for your videos and for sharing your life experiences abroad. I find them beneficial as we are planning retirement abroad, but we aren't sure where. I hope you and your family are well and your life is rewarding and prosperous wherever you call home. Best wishes.

Girl I don't know how much money you need to live but ecuador is very inexpensive to live...we live in cuenca ecuador...monthly in the states we spent 3,000 monthly now we spend 1,500 and that gives us extra money to travel. We don't have a car because you don't need one. It is just the 2 of us and we own pur condo. So that saves money too. But ecuador is way cheaper to live comfortably compared to the states.

Take aways so far 1. It rains during rainy season. 2. The sun can give you sunburns. 3. "When it's cold it's cold" 4. Use a space heater when it's cold outside. 5. It's expensive to buy rugs. 6.OMG she doesn't stop talking about cold shit. 7. Walking uphill is harder than not walking up hill. 8. Vehicles that are designed to go up hills easier go up hills easier than vehicles that aren't designed to go up hills. 9. Things cost money to buy. 10. Travel is not as accessible than in the United States.
