My brain is flooded with memories. This tour started at the corner of Hazelwood and Mahoning. I know that because I grew up a block away on Hazelwood near Oakwood. I haven’t lived in Youngstown since 1975. By 1986, my parents, siblings and in-laws had all joined us in Ariz., so our visits to town have been rare. I was able to recognize some streets and some buildings. As the car drove down a couple of the streets, my thought was that I didn’t know exactly which street it was, but it was like so many of the streets between Meridian Rd. and Steel St, they all looked like home. Certainly the area has changed considerably since my days on the west side, but time and a shrinking city will do that. I watched several videos and drone flights of Youngstown, Mill Creek Park, YSU, downtown, etc. The thing that strikes me most is not the changes on the ground, but the change in the AIR. The clean air I see in this and other videos is something we couldn’t imagine when I grew up.

I was born in industrial northern New Jersey in 1946 so I know what you mean about the air. I don't think I ever saw an actual blue sky until we moved to Connecticut in 1953. Everything was overlaid with either a grayish or yellowish haze.

@@miriambucholtz9315 Miriam, the steel mills around the Youngstown area produced the grayish, the yellowish, the orangey skies and the smell of sulphur and coal. Ironically, when I left in 1975, I moved to northern New Jersey for two years before heading west.

@@robertcampbell8027 Jersey was full of chemical factories belching their pollution around. It completely stopped my nose up and I actually learned to taste odors instead of smell them. What a horrible place to have to do that. Where did you live in NJ?

These are exactly the streets I traveled on hundreds of times growing up on the West Side. Left in 1979 and rarely get back. I truly enjoyed and appreciated this trip down memory lane. Thank you for this thoughtful post.

Some parts of the Westside is considered the hood. I hear about a lot of shootings and drug activity on that side of town. The Westside definitely has changed. Not the whole Westside, but some of the neighborhoods are 👎🏾

Kevin is right for the most part. Aside from a couple side streets and parts of Mahoning Avenue, most of the west side is okay. But the north side still isn't the worst hood in Youngstown. That designation would probably go to La La Land on the east side and probably all of the south side.

That's really true. Most of the west side isn't too bad. There's a couple parts of it that are a little rough, but nothing like the south side or the east side. There's parts of Mahoning Avenue I probably wouldn't hang out at night, but if I was moving to Youngstown and buying a house in the city limits, it would be on the west side for sure.

It depends on what part of Youngstown you're in.

The saying "the west side is the best side" is actually true in Youngstown. Aside from a few streets, it's nowhere near as dangerous as the south side, the east side, and almost all of the north side that isn't YSU-owned.
