I am a drummer, born in the 70s. I have honestly never seen any drummer as good as this man. This video is ten years old. I know the world is full of millions of people, and there is no way you can see them all, but I have literally seen and heard thousands of percussionists. The tricks he did with the spinning of the sticks, although this is not necessary to play, is extraordinary. The way he played and did not miss a beat or a lick, and how fast he was going. using shallow travel type drums that can enable you to play faster, more freely, and more crisp, is what it is all about in these settings anywhere. I admire and respect him. I actually have incorporated some of what he does, because I believe when you play, you are a melody, a song, not just an instrument. He really took over and commanded the drums. If I had even 30 percent of his talent. To me he is the most amazing drummer I have ever witnessed. I say that when I first saw him, and I still say that now. I also believe because of his younger age at the time, he is most definitely a prodigy to be able to play beyond anything you can fathom.
@onetriple42503 жыл бұрын
Couldn't have said it better myself. I've played all kinds of places and seen all kinds of musicians, but this was legitimately jaw-dropping not just because of how fast he plays, but how consistent and accurate he is. Any pro could play maybe any 4 consecutive bars without mistakes after practice, but this guy just keeps GOING and it's clearly just freestyle. He seems to know exactly what every hit is gonna do, something that I think most drummers can only work towards at speeds like this.
@benvanzanten3792 жыл бұрын
Yoni Madar even better.
@informanti2 жыл бұрын
While I agree he is definitely an amazingly talented drummer, you should check out some of larnell lewis' work. Not only does he have the chops and is always in the pocket, but he can learn and remember some of the most complicated music in an inconceivably short amount of time. If you haven't heard of it, I'd highly suggest checking out some of the stuff he played with "snarky puppy". He learned their setlist, while on a flight to fill in for their regular drummer, and when you listen to what they play, you'll see exactly what I mean. It's insane 😂 It never ceases to amaze me how many amazing musicians there are, and somehow, the bar just keeps getting raised.
@ernies88282 жыл бұрын
@@informanti -this is why I never got involved in competition. There is always better drummers or musicians than me, or others, somewhere in the world. That is never why we should play. Yes, I have watched Larnell Lewis. I am familiar with him. He is still not better than this guy.
@informanti2 жыл бұрын
@@ernies8828 What about his drumming makes him the best? What can he do that no one else can? I mean, based on the video, the only attribute that's shown is his chops, and if thats what you think makes him the best, well, Thomas Lang definitely takes the cake in that department. Pretty sure he could do everything this guy did but on his kick drum lol it's absolutely insane what that guy can do. Greyson Nekrutman is also an amazing up and coming drummer. He's probably the closest drummer to emulating buddy rich that I've ever heard, who is the all time greatest drummer. Me personally, I look for more than just chops and flashy stick tricks. Carter Beauford for example has insane chops, but has mastered the ability to keep the underlying groove constant, never out of pocket. How a drummer plays with a band is important, but Carter is probably the best at blending it all together. I don't know, in my opinion, It would be a bit irresponsible to call someone the greatest drummer in the world based on a 7 minute KZbin video when there are guys like Carter, Lang, and Larnell walking around lol

Christopher Holst I think when you're drumming you're not really "putting yourself out there" as in showing your personality. You hit a drum, and it sounds good. The key is he is a prodigy. He practices and plays. He does not need big drums. He uses shallow drums and tight heads because of that. But you still need extraordinary skill to do what he did, in the way he played. Now I am not saying you need to spin your sticks and do tricks to be a good player, but the fact he did that, and played as he was doing it, so fast without missing a beat and a lick, is beyond amazing. I have never seen anyone who can be like that.

He's definitely a very *athletic* drummer, I'll say that, even if he gets a little sloppy towards the end, there (but considering what he's doing, it's still pretty amazing). And a good juggler, as well- a very good showman.
