That's an awesome insight Mikey into the massive system. As a new comer that's not fished this country being based in now Darwin. What is the best time for the big Barra to achieve my dream of a metery with perfect sea conditions and stay at Ashes King Ash Bay Lodge Please ?
@MikeyCunninghamFishing Жыл бұрын
Best chance for a metery... I'm not the best person to ask that. Haha. I'm not exactly qualified. Best chance would be the mouth of Shady Camp late in the buildup I reckon. But locally at King Ash Bay... it's not really known as a BIG Barra spot. Although plenty of big fish get caught every year. I'd say October and November would be best mate.

Hey mate love your videos. Would you recommend My 7mtr plate boat at kab? As I am a bit concerned about the ramp( how long after low tide can this be launched) and access out to reef. Thanks
@MikeyCunninghamFishing Жыл бұрын
Hi mate. No stress with the boat. King Ash Bay doesn’t get massive tides like Darwin does. There will only be a few hours a day you would struggle when the tide is at its lowest. For reference, my boat is 4.75m and I have been able to use the ramp at all tides this year. Although a bit trickier when it’s low. Hope this helps mate.

@MikeyCunninghamFishing4 жыл бұрын
Val was my next door neighbour. She would go out to Mac Mountain in a little tinny before she got her big boat. Haha. I’ve never been there myself, but Ash goes out there occasionally if the weather is good. (Ash, in his big boat from some of my other videos)
@frankgrima4014 жыл бұрын
Mikey Cunningham your videos have opened a lot of memories. Yes I can see that she lived next door to where you use to live. Most would think we were crazy traveling 4850 klms annually to go fishing from Victoria. I left an old Ute up there, in the care of some of the committee members to use. A grey colored Toyota tray Ute. I believe the guy right down the end towards Batten Point has it at his place. Val was tough as, sorry to hear that she passed away. Was also a regular user of the lodge with the previous owners, when we would fly in to Darwin hire a car and drive out there. Great place,if it’s too rough to fish outside we always had many klms of rivers to fish, The McAuthur, Crooked and Johnson along with the entry to the Battern always yielded an adventure great Barra with heaps of fun. We have over many years supported the bar, the crabbers, the petrol station, the accommodation, ( house boats, the lodge, caravan camping and the units) I would hate to think how much money we had spent but the beers were always cold and the meals were always of great value. The kids that were took there are now all men with dailies of there own and with the passing of time it’s great to see the place still going. This mongrel virus is is extremely damaging issue for both health and the economy. Enjoy your life. Keep the King Ash vids going they are great.

Thanks for the info re King Ash Bay. My wife and I (old timers) would like to get there one day with our caravan. We dont have a boat. Is there any good land based areas to fish there, cheers, Bob
@MikeyCunninghamFishing4 жыл бұрын
G'day Bob. It's not the best for land-based fishing. Every now and then you hear of a Barra being caught off the bank at Jenny Flats. But it doesn't happen often. My dad actually caught a 90-something Barra off the bank at Jenny Flats once. Do yourself a favour and play around with your budget to pay for a fishing charter from Ash at NT Coastal Fishing Charters. He will take you out all around the islands in his 9 - 10 metre boat. It's not cheap, but it is always an awesome day. Even if you don't do much fishing while you are there, you will find yourself amongst loads of other people like yourself in caravans simply loving the King Ash Bay lifestyle of happy hour beers, golf, line dancing, bush bingo, live music at the bar (sometimes) and other stuff like that. It's an awesome spot. Cheers, Mikey.

Mikey Cunningham cheers mate. We plan to go anyway, getting some fish is just a bonus. We are from SA and catching a barra is on my bucket list. Any info on a land based spot somewhere in NT would be a bonus. Rgds, Bob.

Hundreds of grey nomads come to KAB every year with car toppers. If you wanted to fish outside around the islands I’d recommend a bigger boat.

Heading up next month. Is it true it takes three hours to get to the islands from the KAB boat ramp? My mates are saying I should bring a swag to camp on one of the islands because we won’t have time to get out there and back before dark.
@MikeyCunninghamFishing3 жыл бұрын
Depends on your boat mate. In good weather with a decent boat you should be able to get to Paradice Bay in under 2 hours I reckon. If the weather is average, then it will take longer. Check out one of my videos from Wiyibi Fishing and Wilderness Lodge. It’s on North Island. If you want to fish the islands you would be mad not to stay out there for a few nights.

Hey mate how big of a steam is it from king ash bay out to West Island?
@MikeyCunninghamFishing3 жыл бұрын
In my boat in perfect conditions I reckon I'd be at Crocodile Point (South Western tip of West Island) in about 45 - 50 minutes. If the weather is good, send it straight up the top of West Island and find yourself some reef. There is loads of it.

Hi Mikey Love your vids. Mate can i ask you for kind ash bay is it possible to leave my tinnie in water overnight near genny flats??? Thanks for any help need to work all my systems before going
@MikeyCunninghamFishing4 жыл бұрын
Hi mate. Yes, people do it all the time. They setup an “endless rope” I think they call it. It’s where you use a rope on a loop to pull your boat out about 10 metres from the shore. And pull the loop the other way to pull the boat back out. I haven’t done it myself, but as I said, people do it all the time there.

How are the tides compared to central island
@MikeyCunninghamFishing3 жыл бұрын
Hi mate. Late reply. It always varies depending on the size of the tide and the wind. However if it’s low tide at Centre Island, there is a fair chance it is somewhere near high tide at King Ash Bay.
