Hi, Robb. My fan makes a loud buzzing noise which stops instantly if I turn the fan off, so I'm guessing it's a capacitor issue. However, it also stops if I pull the chain (not all the way, just put a tiny bit of tension on it). Does this mean it's actually a different issue, or would you still say it's the capacitor?

So I determined my fan has a buzzing noise when powered on. High, med, or low the sound doesn't change. Therefore if it's the capacitor, what should I do? The switch cannot be changed, and it is not a dimming type. Do I need to change the capacitor? If yes, to what kind? Or is it just a defective capacitor in general?
@RobbsHomemadeLifeАй бұрын
Based on the description, the buzzing noise could indeed be related to the capacitor. Ceiling fan capacitors are essential for proper motor function and speed regulation, and a faulty capacitor can cause buzzing. Here's how to address the issue: Steps to Diagnose and Fix: Confirm the Issue: A consistent buzzing noise across all speeds typically points to an electrical issue, often involving the capacitor. Ensure the buzzing isn't caused by loose screws, housing vibrations, or a dirty fan. Inspect the Capacitor: Location: The capacitor is usually inside the fan housing near the motor or switch assembly. Symptoms of Failure: Look for bulges, leaks, or burns on the capacitor. If it's physically damaged, it needs to be replaced. Determine the Specifications: Ceiling fan capacitors have specific ratings, usually in microfarads (μF). These should match the motor's requirements for proper function. The exact rating will be printed on the capacitor or listed in the fan's manual. Replace the Capacitor: Buy the Correct Type: Get a replacement capacitor with the same μF rating. Commonly, ceiling fan capacitors are dual-run capacitors with ratings like 4.5μF, 5μF, or similar. Installation: Disconnect the power to the fan, remove the housing, and carefully replace the capacitor, ensuring the wiring matches the original configuration. Take a photo of the wiring before removal if needed. Test the Fan: Once replaced, reassemble the fan and power it on to check if the buzzing is resolved. If the Problem Persists: If replacing the capacitor doesn't fix the noise, the issue might lie with the motor windings or electrical connections. At this point, it may be best to consult a professional or consider replacing the fan. Safety Note: Always turn off the power at the circuit breaker before working on the fan, and use a multimeter to confirm no power is present in the wires. If you're not comfortable with electrical repairs, it's safer to call a qualified electrician.

Also… another reason for buzzing on a ceiling fan is the glass shades on the light kit. Usually when they are loose, the vibrating motor vibrates the shades causing them to make an annoying buzzing. To fix this, you can tighten the thumbscrews or tighten the washer that holds the shade.

Sir, recently installed a brand new ceiling fan. Pretty nice. Started to notice a clickickty click noise coming from motor. Almost like something is loose rattling around in there. It's most certainly coming from the brand new motor. I tried to shine a flashlight into it to find something, to no avail. There are holes on the top. Do you think its possible maybe a piece from the popcorn ceiling could have fallen inside the motor and is going round and round when its turned on? Or maybe just a faulty motor? Any advice would be much appreciated. If I took the motor apart to further inspect would it harm it? Someone told me it could be tight because its brand new and needs to break in. 🤷🏻♂️

What about a surging noise from the motor? When on High speed?
@RobbsHomemadeLife8 ай бұрын
If the noise continues even after you turn off the fan it could be a large amount of things however if the noise stops as soon as you turn off the switch it's likely one of four problems Motor Issues: The motor itself may be failing or experiencing electrical problems. When the motor runs at high speed, these issues can manifest as surging noises. Overheating, worn bearings, or internal electrical faults could be to blame. Capacitor Problems: the capacitor helps regulate the fan's speed. A faulty capacitor can cause the motor to operate irregularly, leading to surging noises at high speeds. Electrical Wiring: Loose or faulty wiring connections within the fan or in the switch housing could cause intermittent power delivery to the motor, resulting in the surging noise. Switch Issues: The switch itself could be faulty, especially if it is a variable speed switch or has dimmer capabilities. Inconsistent power delivery from a faulty switch could cause the surging noise. Usually it's the dimmer switch or capacitor

@RobbsHomemadeLife7 ай бұрын
Hi Don here's what I would do first Start with the Simple Fixes: Tighten all screws and check for loose parts. Ensure the blades are balanced. Move to Electrical Checks: Test the capacitor with a multimeter and replace it if needed. Inspect the remote receiver and ensure it is properly isolated and securely connected. Motor and Bearings: Lubricate the motor bearings if accessible. Consider replacing the bearings if lubrication does not help.

Can running a fan with a thermostat control and a remote on 24/7 cause the buzzing electric sound. Mines on low almost all day long because i wanted it to be automatic. But now it has a buzzing noise like you described as the capacitor on high and medium and none on low except when going from medium to low. I just got the ceiling fan a few months ago, but have been running it nearly 24/7 because the room doesn't quite get down to tempeture for the thermostat remote. I bought the thermostat remote as a replacement for a basic remote that you turn on and off. All of them are hampton bay parts. I was hoping there would not be a problem.

My fan started being noisy after my brother shot it with bug spray last winter. Is there any way to fix it or would I just need to replace it?
@RobbsHomemadeLife2 жыл бұрын
Just a guess, but perhaps the bug spray removed some lubrication. try adding some fan oil. amzn.to/3vxOaUh

Just a bought a brand new fan, we put it up yesterday to test it out and noticed it was kind of loose but had no humming noise. We put new screws on the bracket and it’s nice and tight, but when we turned the fan on it’s making a humming sound and we haven’t even installed the blades. Any suggestions to what’s causing the humming sound?
@RobbsHomemadeLife3 жыл бұрын
if you are using a dimmer switch on a wall that can do it. Also you can have something loose or be unlucky and have a bad capacitor.

What about a squealing noise. It’s a light, high pitched noise almost like when the belt on a car squeals but it’s light. Just enough to be super annoying… we have looked at it and can’t find anything loose.
@RobbsHomemadeLife7 ай бұрын
hello jeri, To address the squealing noise in the ceiling fan, here are some steps you can follow: Check for Dust and Dirt: Dust and dirt can accumulate in the motor and bearings, causing a squealing noise. Cleaning the fan, especially around the motor and bearings, can sometimes resolve the issue. Lubricate the Bearings: Ceiling fan bearings can dry out over time, leading to squealing. Applying a few drops of light machine oil to the bearings may help. Ensure the fan is turned off and the blades are stationary before doing this. Tighten All Screws and Bolts: Even though they have checked for loose parts, it's worth going over all screws and bolts again to ensure they are securely tightened. Check the Blade Balance: Imbalanced blades can cause unusual noises. They should ensure all blades are evenly weighted and aligned. Blade balancing kits are available for this purpose. Inspect the Mounting: Ensure the fan is securely mounted to the ceiling and there are no loose parts in the mounting bracket. Examine the Capacitor: Sometimes, a faulty capacitor can cause noises. If they are comfortable, they can check the capacitor for any signs of damage or wear and replace it if necessary. Motor Inspection: If none of the above solutions work, the issue might be with the motor itself. It might require professional inspection or replacement if it's a motor problem.

My ceiling fan was making a clicking noise so I checked all the screws on the blades and there were a few loose. While I was working on it anyway, I decided to take the blades down and give them a cleaning. I took the light globes down and cleaned them too. The blades do not appear to be warped. When I assembled it all back together, there was a buzzing/vibrating noise. The fan turns ok (no hesitations) and there is a definite wobble but the noise is concerning. The noise is there regardless of fan speed and is still there even if power is turned off. So, not electrical and likely mechanical. Did I push dust into the motor and now have a motor issue? I don’t want to spend a bunch of time trying to balance the wobble if the motor is shot and I have to replace it anyway. There is no oil hole and the manual says that, “The motor has permanently lubricated bearings. There is no need to oil.” The fan did not make this noise before I cleaned it. It is a 20 year old Harbor Breeze model CHT52WW5LK. I don’t want to replace it if I don’t have to because it is in the bedroom of a high risk individual so I can’t have anyone in to install it and I’m not capable of doing it myself. Here is a link to a video of the noise. The video isn’t the greatest but it is kind of like the buzzing of an insect caught in there. (It’s not that though.) Did I kill it by cleaning it?kzbin.info/www/bejne/on-yp3mFr7Bqj9E

Hi Debbie. You are right I think, if the noise continues after the power is turned off it should be mechanical. Something may be loose or out of balance. You can add washers to the blade fasteners and check other parts to make sure they are tight. if the blades are bent or out of balance there are small weights you can add to balance them. Just work on one thing at a time until you find out what is causing the noise.

Robb's Homemade Life Thanks for the response. Hi, thanks for the response. Is it safe to remove the blades and run the fan to see if it makes the noise without the blades? All the blades have washers and I still makes the noise at a slow speed. The sound didn’t start until after I removed the blades to clean them and then put them back.
@debbiekleinberg4 жыл бұрын
Robb's Homemade Life The blades already had and still have the washers.
@RobbsHomemadeLife4 жыл бұрын
@@debbiekleinberg I don't see a problem doing that. If it turns out there is a problem with the blades you can buy a blade balancing kit for a few dollars at Home depot or Loews. The only thing I would do is probably what you are already doing which is to check and make sure everything is tight and not loose.
@mzunnurain Жыл бұрын
It's likely because of the disturbance that caused the noise. Just let it run and the centrifugal force will help put everything back in place. My husband got overzealous in cleaning and it made all kinds of noise when he was done. It eventually quieted.

My fan does not make buzzing sound immediately after it's turned on. It takes around a couple of minutes for it to start making a buzzing sound. What could be the problem?
@RobbsHomemadeLife4 жыл бұрын
Check to see everything is tight. In particular the bolts that attach the blades. If that does not help check your capacitor as mentioned in the video.

Hey I listen to your fan noise on your channel it sounds like the noise fans get if you are using a dimmer switch or sometimes the capacitor is starting to go bad. It did not sound like anything was rubbing or loose it sounded like it was something electrical. If the noise stops immediately when you turn the power off I think it's electrical and probably the dimmer switch or capacitor

You forgot the 6th noise... squeaking! That's what my fan is doing and I'm desperately trying to figure out why and how to stop it 😭
@RobbsHomemadeLife6 ай бұрын
Does the squeaking go away if you turn the power off
@dreadfairy69636 ай бұрын
@RobbsHomemadeLife yes it is slightly rocking when it's on medium speed, which is my preferred speed. I've cleaned the blades and tightened every bolt on the thing! It's just a tiny rocking and only squeaks a tiny bit every minute or so. But it's enough to wake us up each time 😩
@RobbsHomemadeLife6 ай бұрын
A ceiling fan that squeaks and rocks intermittently at medium speed might have a few underlying issues. Here's a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and potentially fix the problem: 1. Check for Loose Screws and Connections Blade Screws: Ensure all screws connecting the fan blades to the motor are tight. Loose screws can cause the blades to wobble and create noise. Motor Housing Screws: Check the screws securing the motor housing to the ceiling bracket. Tighten if necessary. Downrod Screws: If your fan uses a downrod, make sure the screws connecting the downrod to the motor and ceiling bracket are secure. 2. Inspect the Blades Warped or Damaged Blades: Inspect the blades for warping or damage. A warped blade can throw the fan off balance, leading to noise and rocking. Replace any damaged blades. Blade Alignment: Measure the distance from the tip of each blade to the ceiling. The distance should be the same for all blades. If not, the blades may need to be realigned. 3. Balance the Blades Blade Balancing Kit: Use a blade balancing kit (often included with the fan or available at hardware stores) to identify and balance any blades that are out of balance. This can help eliminate both noise and rocking. Penny Test: Tape a penny to the top of one blade, then run the fan. If the noise stops, try the penny on other blades to find the unbalanced one. Adjust as needed. 4. Lubricate the Motor Bearings Oil or Lubricant: If the fan has accessible bearings, add a few drops of oil specifically designed for ceiling fans to the bearings. This can reduce squeaking caused by dry bearings. Check your fan's manual for recommended lubrication points and oil type. 5. Check the Fan Mounting Loose Mounting Bracket: Ensure the ceiling fan mounting bracket is securely attached to the electrical box in the ceiling. A loose bracket can cause the fan to wobble and squeak. Electrical Box: Confirm that the electrical box is firmly attached to the ceiling joist and is rated to support a ceiling fan. 6. Examine the Capacitor Capacitor Issues: Sometimes, a faulty capacitor can cause speed-specific issues. If your fan consistently rocks or squeaks only at medium speed, consider having the capacitor checked or replaced by a professional. 7. Verify Installation and Fan Type Check Installation: Review the installation to ensure that all components are correctly assembled according to the manufacturer's instructions. Fan Type: Some ceiling fans may not perform well on certain speed settings due to design or motor quality. If the problem persists despite the above steps, it could be related to the specific model of the fan.
