This is a video on attention grabbing (particularly on KZbin) and how it harms what would we consider "high quality content."
I have no dogs, so I'm not saying that I'm right on this topic by any means, but I have seen a lot more discussion surrounding social media platforms manipulating our attention more than I've seen discussions on the content that is on those social media platforms.
From TikTok to Mr. Beast, to the channels that try to emulate him, what we see time and time again is that the content we consume is incredibly attention grabbing, and there are some tricks that are constantly being used, like rapid cutting or rapidly revealing text.

Some Housekeeping: First: Please check out the exclusive NordVPN deal here: nordvpn.com/hoog. It helps me, it's a really great service, and it's also risk- free with Nord’s 30-day money back guarantee. Secondly, I'm still figuring out how to coordinate my sources correctly for the audience, including the Barcelona video. But once my website is launched, the source documents will be updated in turn. Thirdly, I understand that this video isn't necessarily 'European,' but it's a topic I feel passionate about it and that's why I made it. I make videos for myself after all, but my videos will always stay primarily focused on European stories. Fourthly, I've been messing around with colorgrading a bit, imperfectly, so make sure the video is high resolution, and it will be a bit weird looking at times. Lastly, I will be focusing on making much longer videos from now on. Not only does that prevent me from producing noise (time constrains me on the amount of quantity I can produce), but it also justifies having large segments of advertising when the video is twenty minutes as opposed to, like, eight minutes.

For the last 6 months I’ve manipulated my KZbin feed to only contain scientific subjects. This has been great for me because I watch KZbin less than before and every time I do I learn something and thereby after after watching 2-3 videos I feel like I’ve accomplished something and I’m ready to do something else. This has had a direct effect on my grades in school because I study more and at the same time I learn things that I have use of. Thx for the great video! Instead of getting my frustration towards the world sorted out, I'll take my anger out at random people on the internet who are just as clueless as I am. But I'll keep being cynical towards everything because that's more comforting than truly letting go to the insanity of being anything at all. But forget that. I remember reading about very old studies showing that long distance runners are more motivated and achieve faster times if there are more corners in their run. Short sight lines with clear goals you can reach allow you to handle things one part at a time while long stretches can seem daunting. Maybe the fact that a lot of things online had trained people to want things instantly but I think the desire to break things down into manageable chunks has always been there.

You’re on the precipice of success on this platform, you’re just in that lull experienced by channels just before they pop off. What happens is you’ll keep plugging away for a while, could be months, could be a year or 2, and then once one video pops, your whole backlog will start being recommended. Because your backlog is so high quality already, it’ll captivate the viewers who trigger the algorithm, leading to the algorithm identifying your channel as a high quality one, further boosting the recommendations in a virtuous cycle. You’ll come out the other side in the low millions for subs, and 1mm+ views on each video. This will be a massive windfall, as the bigger the backlog before the blowup, the more ad revenue you’ll get flooded with. Think of it as a prosperity timebomb you’re building, and the longer it ticks before blowing, the bigger the explosion. Just keep churning out high quality content like this, and you’ll be sitting pretty.

This is what I've been thinking about for a while... It seems people are just going for quick cuts, having as much stuff on screen as possible, and making sure you DON'T take your eyes off. Not even for a split second. I get it, it works for them and gets them a higher Average View Duration but I can't help but feel that we'll be seeing more and more of these videos. My problem with it is that in the near future, taking your time to develop a story, and experimenting with different aesthetic choices won't be rewarded. Allowing less room for creativity.

I'm wondering, it's always framed as us having "bad attention", but really we're figuring out that we are capable of consuming more information a second than we previously were able to with older media forms. Sure, when we go back to older forms of media, we're seemingly unable to concentrate. Same would be the case for the previous generations if we drastically slowed down the storytelling in books and movies. It's just a matter of comparison and that's why I have my phone or computer turn text to speech, turn up the speech by 200% and then read along as it is being narrated to be, flying through (non-fiction) books way faster than if I had to read them without assistance. The lack of pauses keep my attention and I'm perfectly capable of understanding what is being read to me while I'm browsing over the same text with my eyes. I'm even experimenting right now with having the text appear in the center of my screen, word for word, at the same time. I remove the physical barriers and allow my brain to go as fast as it actually is capable of going. Not a recommendation, just me using technology to my advantage after realizing by brain is super fast and capable of so much more. Now, there might be a counter argument when it comes to things you can't speed up and sure, you can make an argument for the anxiousness people feel when they put away the screen. But from my experience, these are separate issues. If you can't enjoy the slower paced things and you get anxious not consuming streams of content, you're most likely doing that in the first place because you're not comfortable with your own thoughts and the confrontation with reality and all its challenges. I personally realized this after getting my business in order and setting up good habits, as well as clear goals. Now I race through handpicked content when possible, but because I am in line with my purpose and reality, I can also accept the quiet moments and enjoy them without music, podcasts, social media or random videos. All because I'm not ignoring my personal responsibilities and even getting them done a lot faster, giving me room for more breaks. Our attention span is, I think, doing fine. Better yet, it's finally being tested to its limits and I'm amazed at how little training we need to adapt to the consuming of all this high speed information. But if you don't actively choose what you consume and you don't actively have an expressive output in the form of a (creative) hobby or project or... then you're just consuming to fill the time and logically you'll get anxious, depressed and dependent on it. Its like any other drug, combine it with a way of expressing yourself and do it purposefully and in the right amounts, and you'll be able to enhance and enlighten your understanding and how to communicate your deeper thoughts and feelings. Do it just for the sake of doing it and in high doses and you'll end up dependent on it and/or broken by it. Moreover, you'll end up confused, because you don't have a way of linking it to anything. You didn't start with a question or concept, you started with consuming. Of course you'll end up wondering how to process it and feeling overwhelmed. You have no manual output related to personal growth or expression. How to get anxiety 101. So yeah, personally I truly belief that it is the individual that needs to take up the responsibility. And I personally also belief it's the job of the educational system to integrate in their curriculum advanced techniques on how to properly ask questions and form answers, how to consume information and process it and how to translate your inner ideas and thoughts by expressing yourself one way or another. This is so extremely important for any human living in this modern society and it applies to everything you consume, not just online content. That's where we'll make a difference, not online by pushing for more limitations and restrictions and premade, invisible filters that "protect" us from our stupid selves, but in reality limit our search results to what the algorithms think we want. It's the whole "teach a man how to fish" concept. But the educational system is currently focusing on comparing students to standards and with others through a grading system, as well as teaching them to mindlessly consume, regurgitate and vomit out the same content as presented as if retaining information you don't readily need and spewing it out on commend is equal to intelligence. So yeah, we're basically being taught to consume the wrong way and it shows. If you want your attention back, don't detach from the system, but make the system work for you.

@@itsohaya4096 Cute. But I have also been diagnosed with ADHD and ASD as well. The difference between us must lie elsewhere, maybe it's that I don't let those things define me, yet figured out and still continue to figure out (with a lot of effort and struggling) how to make it all work for me. Also, if you don't read full comments, yet still reply, you probably are the perfect example of my previous statement that some people don't even know why they are online, but just are because they avoid responsibilities or refuse to translate what they learn to improve their work or themselves. It's also hard to belief that you aren't capable of more, seeing my initial comment had 16 likes and I highly doubt you didn't read a lot of other comments before you arrived at mine. You might think you're smart, but you're just a smartass. Weaponizing your challenges to make yourself belief you can't overcome them is not a trait of ASD, I figured that out by working hard. It takes one to recognize one. Maybe don't hide behind ASD and lie to others online, making other people with ASD look bad. But more importantly, stop lying to yourself. I can see you're lying to yourself, because I've been there. But do you still notice the difference? Or did you start believing it? Wake up. Take control.

Original poster, you really did not need to recount your stories nor did you have to self-indulge with your fascination because the main point of your comment is contained with the last two sentences. Such self-indulgence is rather egotistic; if you want to tell other people something, avoid being verbose and be succinct. Most of the time, we are verbose not because we cannot communicate directly but because we are being vain.
@laurensdesmet70
@laurensdesmet70 Жыл бұрын
@@john3260 I agree. I'm too verbose. I try to notice this, especially coming back to comments on later dates and you're right that my conclusion and point can be found in those last sentences. Seeing that time is precious and my goal is to give people my two cents, I should consider scrapping the part that leads to my conclusion or make (answer) videos myself where I go more in depth. It's not because I'm vain, though. At least, I don't think it is if I'm trying to be honest with myself. I don't care too much for praise of any sort, I truly get my satisfaction from sharing insights in the hopes these offer some value to others. I just tend to write my thoughts down as I think, a habit I have from personal journaling. But you're right that it would be good practice to learn to be more succinct on online platforms so that I don't waste peoples time for something that could be said with a lot less words. Thanks for the honest feedback, much appreciated.

Hey! I am really enjoying your content, you touch on a lot of interesting topics and convey them in a very dense yet comprehensible way. I would like to just give one feedback regarding the visualization: (At least for me) It is very hard to grasp the connection between a good portion of the graphs and what you are actually trying to convey. E.g., you talk about reduced attention span across Twitter/Reddit every year but the graphs shows longer bars year after year. A nice step in the right direction for clear communication was the legend for the retention graph while explaining cutting videos into smaller segments (even though I think it could have been more prominent rather than just being some kind of foot note). I definitely like the style of your visualizations so I would be very happy if you'll aim for even more clear imagery in the future!

I think you're ignoring a major element to all this, that being that children make up a large part of KZbin's audience, and that that percentage of overall people grows everyday. This is just simply due to the fact that kids have far more free time, and therefore far more hours of overall watch time for people to try and cater to. It's very obvious when watching some of the biggest channels that this is who they cater to, even Mr. Beast himself has made it clear that that's his strategy. Therefore, it's inevitable that this would get to this point, kids have the attention spans of goldfish. This isn't to say that this content doesn't do any harm to their attention spans at all, but it's also probably not far off to how their brains are anyways. It's important to not be too alarmist about this, I'm doubtful that many full grown adults are being corrupted to this extent.

Looking at the videos in question from a certain succesful youtuber, the cuts are that frequent that there are often a dozen different sets/locations filmed for what is frequently only a 10 minute video. Whilst people might prefer this type of content, surely at some point recording all those different locations won't be worth it..

Noticed this in action when channels started making quick 30 sec videos sometimes with a sudden ending at the end (War Thunder for example) and then channels including 30 second clips which tell you to watch the full video if the shorter one had you interested.... KZbin shorts of course, KZbin is going the way of TikTok

Obvously thumbnails are also crucial to grab viewers' attention. For that reaason I think you should change yours, it's much darker compared even to your previous thumbnails and has very little contrast. It is stylish and tells a lot about the content but it does not grab attention I think. Besides that AWESOME video as always, I enjoyed the analysis and the beautiful animations, thanks for the hard work

Feedback: 7:30 It would help for the ease of access (readability) to make the text more thicker, larger or maybe use a color that gives more contrast. But my theory is that it's simply not enough pixels to be easily readable. I am watching through a 40" 4K TV. Video was OK, maybe a little thin information wise. But yeah, maybe that was also your intention - playing game with monke brain.

That's likely because online video everywhere is encoded in YUV420 pixel format (probably YCbCr420 actually, but the 420 is the important part), which means that the color information is at half the resolution of the actual video resolution. This makes stark red or blue text especially blurry and difficult to see, even if it looked great for Hoog in the video editor. The only thing Hoog can do about it is stop using stark red text, which he should.

if major video platforms stuck to promoting longer form content, I think we could have gotten to a position where the rise in video quality driven by competition would actually increase viewer's attention spans. sadly, I think now that the decline has started it will only get worse from here
@johan_r59

long video's can be bad for someone's attention span too. Just look at video's like those from mrbeast, where every 20 seconds the stakes are risen and challenges are changing, just to keep someone's attention. I also don't see how social media is increasing their focus on shorter content. KZbin made the switch from views to watchtime years ago, and we are seeing more and more multiple hour long video's being successful. Instagram is increasing their focus on video content compared to pictures. Tiktok increased their video length cap to 3 minutes, and is currently extending it to 8 minutes. On top of that, more people are binge-watching shows on Netflix or competitors than ever, and most Netflix originals are shows instead of movies.

Quick feedback: Why so desaturated/dark/lowish contrast? I typically watch in 480p so that the 3x speed I watch at is easier to process, and found I had to crank the quality quite a bit more than usual. Could also be that my monitor just has crap contrast which is true, but very very few "professionally" produced videos have this problem. My suggestion, increase the brightness and saturation of your videos. You can keep the clean black background aesthetic, but just increase the brightness/contrast of your visuals. Edit: Just went through and while my contrast/brightness complain still stands, the overall low resolution of font/images is actually to blame. Not exactly sure what the issue is. Watched some of your other videos and 480p was fine. Maybe increase font size by ~10%?

I feel there is another metric to consider - video length. I have started to watch (some) videos at 1.25 or 1.5 depending on the speed at which the person is speaking. And that is because most videos are 10+ minutes to favour the youtube algorithm which sometimes requires the creator to put a lot of b-roll of "fluff" in the middle. I value my time but I also want to hear the message of the video. I guess that is also a symptom of a lowered attention span? Though, don't notice it in other areas of life. Anyway. Please, monkey. Keep doing what you are doing.

It's can become a problem in real life, because people can't speak 1.5x or 2x faster in real life, so we become impatient. That's my theory.

I like things that stand out and so does your thumbail (minimalistic if i may say so) and i liked it i wanted to watch more and saw that you only had like 8 other videos to watch. Seen everyone since then and i like to share them with friends and my parents because the subjects are interesting. MrBeast claims that his success is purely a result of his hard work and knowledge of the platform, but I disagree since I know there are thousands upon thousands of creators who put out videos that are just as “quality.” I do believe there’s a certain aspect of luck in getting picked up by the algorithm and becoming huge like that, like on any social media platform. In my opinion, it’s along the same lines of billionaires believing they got where they did purely through hard work as well, and not connections, preexisting wealth, or pure luck. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure billionaires and MrBeast did work very hard, but so do a lot of people. What are your thoughts on this?

Mr Beat also invests a lot of money into his videos, there's only so much production quality can do, but considering most youtubers are of limited means it allows him to do things others cannot. I think there's an issue of saturation, there's ton of channels like Hoog's with good graphics and content, but there are fewer like Mr. Beast who can cover topics and make sets because of his money. I'm sure if Hoog was able to purchase another editor he would be able to make more/faster videos or improve quality through more specialization of labor. You can say luck accounts for everything, but as the saying goes, fate tends to favor the better prepared army.

No my attention doesn't suck. My patience has matured. We as a society are getting smarter and we're starting to realize an 8 minute video by some random dude explaining information we already know does literally NOTHING for us and we've come to understand that. My life was not made better from clicking this video, the same can be said for the myriad of content on the internet. The correlation between video cuts and attention spans is curious but doesn't mean what you want it to mean.
