Hey Steve what are you thoughts on another extensive work of history, the Civilization series by the Durants?

It's unfortunate they never got to finish them and that they are no longer in print as far as I know. There should be cheap paperbacks of them available but all I ever found were expensive old hardback sets. I've only ever got through the first volume and a little of the second volume as audiobooks (which does not count as reading, obviously, though strangely some people claim it does).
