People here have selective memories about this movie because Michael declares his undying love for Kay after this sequence and tells her she’s the one he “loved and valued most in the world” and proceeds to tell her he still loves her. But because it doesn’t suit the fantasies of the fans, they only remember the scene where an Italian song reminds him of Apollonia unlike the time he tells Kay that he “dreams of her every night here in Sicily”. The only way for them to cope is by cherry-picking scenes so they can wrongly claim Apollonia was his one true love even though Michael, Al Pacino and Coppola have said over and over that it is Kay who was the love of Michael’s life and not Apollonia.
@AdamWest1290 Жыл бұрын
My opinion he just says that because appollonia is dead, plain and simple, if she never would've died he would've moved on with her because not only because she was beautiful and way more beautiful than kay but because she was Sicilian, she was perfect for Michael and I'm sure his mother, father, and his brothers would've loved her, but because she died he had no choice to go back to Kay because of course he still loved her and he needed someone to go to, I get Kay and Michael were in love but I always say him and appollonia were a match made in heaven

Raja Pamungkas: I agree. You can only truly love one of your own kind, it’s just something about your own kind that makes you fell that special unique type of love. That love which is genuine and makes you want to protect your wife and treat her like a queen. Western wives aren’t conservative and don’t know much (or even really care) about your culture and heritage.
@HiThere-tv2bd4 жыл бұрын
I think it was the opposite. Appollonia was lust but we got to see their courtship and her unfortunate demise so she's the more sympathic to the audience. But it's strange that people think the young, inexperienced, whiny Appollonia would have made a better wife. Away from her homeland and family I think she would have suffered.

1:43 - 2:04 I think this is one of the most pivotal moments in the movie, I dare say even the Corleone saga. Why? Michael is seeking a powerful advocate within the Vatican to help overcome resistance from the board members of Imobiliare. And technically, he was right and smart to do this to further his legitimate interest. What Michael didn't count on was opening his heart to God in deep sorrow and regret for a life of great sins. I think Don Tomasina knew this and was counting on it. Just the way he speaks to Michael with assuredness. Yes, Don Tomasina supported the business venture to help a beloved family friend acting in good faith against bad actors. But I think the Don (whom Michael lamented was loved in his society rather than feared) had in mind to help guide Michael to redemption for his own soul. Michael already showed he was seeking a path of redemption and honor for himself and for the name of his family in his divestments from illicit enterprises, re-investing in legitimate enterprise, generous giving to charity, and his slow exodus from the underworld. In meeting Cardinal Lamberto, though, Michael's worldly concerns and resistance gave way. One of the most powerful and feared men in the world faced his sins for the first time in his life and was broken before God. All this hinged on the word of a friend, who turned out to be more friend to Michael than he knew. As a caveat, personally I don't see that men, whether clergy or judge, have the power, much less the right, to forgive sins on behalf of the injured, never mind the slain. I'm referring to the rite of confession before a priest. It's in the power and the right of those injured (physically or otherwise) to forgive those who injured them. It does bring up issues of ability (what about the slain?) and trust (victims of repeated deception, cheating, theft, abuse) to forgive the wrongdoer and that's another discussion. There’s a great video by a UCLA psychiatrist that talks about this. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKnWh4CVnMljisU&ab_channel=PragerU In the context of this story, though, the main thrust was seeing a powerful and hardened man humble himself and begin a path of genuine repentance the rest of his days. Yes, the saga ends in great tragedy and loneliness. I see that as Coppola and Puzo’s own Ecclesiastes-like comment on the travail and ultimate vanity of seeking power. And it’s poetic. Regardless, they crafted this story to bring to the fore the need and reality of repentance and redemption. A lot of words for a seconds of dialogue, but that’s what impresses me with Don’s advice to Michael. A great scene. Thanks for sharing this clip.

1:10 One of the best lines in cinematic history 'Our Ships must all sail in the same direction'. Sounds so gritty , when Don Michael sardonically mimics Don Lucchesi after Don Tommasino makes this earth shattering revelation to him. But why does he praise Don Altobello when in reality Altobello turns out to be the 'hidden enemy'?
@Damian_19892 жыл бұрын
Technically speaking, Tommassino's words don't conflict with the idea of Altobello being a traitor. It is "reasonable" from his point of view to try and get rid of Michael, and being deceptive in his betrayal requires him to be talented and present himself as a negotiator between Sicilian and American interests.

How is that loveable moment. Michael came to Sicily, he is having meeting in front of her monument he didn't even remember her. Song Bruccia T reminded him. Michael didn't like the song but it reminded him of her..... song isn't a love song, romantic song or sad song. Bruccia T is a lust song. It is a song that speaks about man who is lonely and horney. He can't sleep at night bc " His body is thirsty for love " and " she is thirsty for water ". Body thirsty for love....means he is horny She is thirsty for water....means she is young. Michael takes off the glasses and puts his face in a hand which is a gesture he made throughout entire trilogy, especially gf3 every time he face something shamfull, something wrong. That is how he reacted when Kay told him Anthony knows that he killed Fredo ( who he killed bc Kay), that is how he reacted in a kitchen after attempt of assassination, in an office when he saw Vincent and Zaza fight. He has sad look on his face.....sadden remembering what he had done. He betrayed his wife with a child. He is looking at his child remembering how he married a child . Mary storms out .... Michael puts on the glasses and goes to face " ugly truth"... Scene is one of many proofs that the only love that existed between them was physical act of love, sexual Conversation he had with his children wasn't an emotional moment. He is worried about Mary and is trying to convince her to leave Vincent. He took Kay ,later in a movie, to a same room where he had sex with Apollonia just to tell her he was thinking about her after he married Apollonia. Michael:" I spent many nights in this room thinking of you " Kay :" Than you got married " Michael:" I still thought about you "... Final proof it was just sex.

Apollonia was a thunderbolt. That is biological manifestation of arousal, sexual eraction. He loved her sexually. Physical act of love was the only thing between them. We call that sex or fu**king but that would be too vulgare for movie or the book. That is how it was described in a book, shown in a movie. That is how it was commented by Coppola who at the moment when Michael spoke to Vitelli and mentioned marriage said:" This is NOT the case of a prince asking for a princess " And that is how it was portrayed through music of the trilogy.....all songs that speak about love of the heart are about Kay and songs that speak about love of the body are about Apollonia. Like Bruccia T.... it's not a love song or romantic song. It's a lust song that speaks about man who is lonely and horney. He can't sleep at night bc " His body is thirsty for love " and " she is thirsty for water ".. She is thirsty for water ...meaning she is young Body thirsty for love.....meaning he is horny. Such a dissapointment.. from the stern, somber man who ordered his brother killed to a little more than a mafia clown.. such a dissapointment

Bruccia T? It's a lust song. It's not a sad song. It's not a love song or romantic song. It's a song that speaks about man who is lonely and horney. He can't sleep at night bc his " body thirsty for love " and " she is thirsty for water " Body thirsty for love...means he is horny. She is thirsty for water...means she is young. Song is a yet another proof that the only thing that existed between them was physical act of love. We call that sex or fu **ing but that would be too vulgare for movie or the book. That is how it was described in a book, shown in a movie and commented by Coppola, confirmed by every song in trilogy. While commenting godfather moment when Michael spoke to old Vitteli and mentions marriage Coppola said " This is NOT the case of a prince asking for a princess " Compare that with the song To each its own by Livingston performed by Johhny Fontana at the beginning of the movie. It's a love song that speaks about man who loves with the heart. " Rose must remain rose in sun and rain, can't let you go your touch means too much to me, key to my dreams, one and only you".

By the way Apollonia was a manipulative goldigger who he conned into marrying him at the hight of the danger and practically killed.
