My favorite Memphis song(s)? Lyle Lovett "I've Been To Memphis" and "Memphis Midnight/ Memphis Morning" (Eric Taylor). I have a soft spot for Texas songwriters. Not much of a movie guy, lately... Thanks, Otis!

Chuck Berry's Memphis Tennessee is one of the songs that (indirectly) had the most impact my life. I've wanted to be a singer as long as I can remember, but didn't think I was any good. Then one time when I was 14 I got bored and recorded myself singing Memphis Tennessee. I listened back to it and went huh...that's not awful I guess...and now I annoy everyone who lives near me with constant singing and guitar playing!

Walking in Memphis would be a close second to Memphis in the meantime. Back in late 80’s / early 90’s when Walking in Memphis came out, Marc Cohn came through Minneapolis and performed a free concert at an outdoor park. It was early September and as the concert started a heavy fog set in. Was a beautiful night and the fog just added such a great moody feeling to the concert. An added treat was that accompanying Marc Cohn was John Leventhal on guitar. Those two spun some magic that night. Probably in my top two list of concerts I’ve attended.

I was just listening to "Carl Perkins' Cadillac" by the Drive-By Truckers. Almost forgot how much I liked that one. Among filmmakers, Jarmusch is hard to beat - but My Blueberry Nights, Wong Kar-Wai's first English language feature, was set in Memphis and stars Norah Jones. I'll be streaming it later today.

All the way from Memphis from Mott the Hoople has been one of my favorite songs since I was a toddler but after discovering Tom T. Hall when I was 12, That's how I got to Memphis was his first song I heard and it's a great one. I was lucky enough to find Tom's first album Homecoming at the flea market for $3 last weekend too. He's definitely gotta be one of my favorite songwriters. Have a nice day Otis!

A couple of more mainstream studio films where Memphis is an important setting: The Firm and, more recently, Elvis. As for fave versions of “That’s How I Got to Memphis,” three come to mind: Rosanne Cash (w/ Rodney Crowell doing a spot on impression of her Daddy on the “I haven’t eaten a bite line), Jeff Daniels on the series finale of HBO’s “The Newsroom,” and Austin songster Karen Abrahams.

Hey Otis. You make my days better in every way. Thanks for sharing your life. My pick for my favorite "Memphis" song goes way back to the '50s when I was a teenager and heard the astonishing guitar instrumental "Memphis, Tennessee" by Lonnie Mack (all credit to Chuck, but he couldn't play like this). I think Lonnie was one of the first rock'n'roll guitar virtuosos, and surely my favorite. Thanks again! Iggy in Oregon

While I'm thinking about it, Buddy Miller would be a good interview. He has played with everyone, and is also a great singer, songwriter and musician. His wife, Julie is also a great songwriter and they both would be interesting to talk to.

I love Walking in Memphis (Marc Cohn) and also Memphis Groove Thing (Rob Jungklas). I visited there 14 years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Started a lyric in my head: I GOTTA GET BACK TO MEMPHIS/THE VERY NEXT CHANCE I GET, WHY I'D JUMP IN MY CAR AND GO THERE TODAY/BUT MY CREDIT CARD STATEMENT AIN'T PAID OFF YET;...heh, if I do go back one day I'll be motivated to finish it And so glad you got to The Arcade, good eatin'! I still have their T-shirt but it doesn't fit me anymore. And right across the street was the Amtrak station - there was nothing modern about it, it literally smelled like the 1800s, as best as I could imagine...

Hey Otis, I just wanted to applaud your photography. I’ve been with your channel for ages, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching your visuals get better and better. I remember when you first started making videos in color. And the apparent camera or lens upgrade a while back. This shot today is so pleasing. And I like what you say here about cutting people some slack for mispronouncing a word, because it means they probably read it, so you know they’re a reader. My brother and I discuss that often, when one of us encounters that situation. I know I’m sometimes guilty of it. There are certain words that I’ve only read. I’ve never heard anyone use them. So I’m always hesitant to use them myself. Anyway, it’s a subtle point you’ve made, and I appreciate it. You have such a knack for nuance. Drinking my morning coffee with you has been a gift over the years. A constant companion, and I just wanted to say thanks, and tell you how much I appreciate your aesthetic. Have a great day.
