About "Pretty Women", if we check the credits of the album, it was mentioned there that this song is inspired by the American Song "Oh Pretty Women". They have given the credits for it properly. I think this was mentioned on their Wikipedia page as well. Infact, even if you check the credits of the official song on KZbin, they have very clearly mentioned Roy Obrinson's name as the music composer as well as the lyricist. So no, "Pretty Women" from Kal Ho Naa Ho is not copied, instead is rightfully inspired. And besides, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy are just so true to their art and are sooo amazing with their work, it would be absolutely unbelievable if they ever did any such thing. The songs they have given to the industry are just pure gold. It would have been better if Schoop Whoop did their research properly.

An entire song's structure doesn't need to be 'sampled' for it to have the title of 'copied'. Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice had sampled just the bassline of Queen & David Bowie's hit song "Under Pressure", and also changed a note in the baseline. But still, considering the significance of the bassline(maybe), Queen sued Vanilla Ice and the court passed the judgment in their favor.

Nope I dont agree with you brother sometimes artists unknowingly “copy” songs because they listen to world music and it gets embeded into their subconscious. Even Tarantino blatantly steals the scenes of other movies and not from a single source and he has accepted it but he will not go around to mention each filmmaker’s name because he adds his creativity to it and takes the “copied “scene to another level. People like you will call that creativity but when some cues and tunes are “copied” from other songs but the arrangement, instrumentation and singing is different then too people will disregard the artists completely. Also I am not justifying blatant plagiarism of songs in Bollywood and I am not naive to the fact that this happens but the whole point of the video was to say that not all the songs that sound a bit similar are copied.

I would disagree with your take on "inspired songs". If a director lifts even a single tune or a section as it is without giving the original creator any credit, then the song shouldn't be considered as his/her "original work" even if the rest of the song is originally composed or another instrument is used. I would call it an "inspiration" only when a director makes at least some alterations to the tune he/she is inspired from. If a composer wants to lift the tune as it is, then he/she should do so by giving credits or obtaining permission (as Shankar- Ehsaan - Loy and Vishal-Shekhar did for Pretty Woman and Dildaara, respectively). I think the main issue is not blatantly lifting the songs or sections, but not giving credits to the original creator. On the other hand, some people do get carried away and call similar sounding lines or sections as "copied" even though they're not blatant lifts. Love your content though...

Regarding Pretty Woman, Dharma Productions actually bought rights of the original song so that they could use the tune. Nothing wrong there and the context is bang on what you said. It seems like SRK's character took Pretty WOman as an inspiration and remoulded a hindi song around it, comes off much more realistic. Regarding Dedi, the song you heard is not the original, this song or rather that hook part has been used and reused multiple times and is a common trope to establish an Arabic theme. It was used in a Govinda film as well, where he was changing his disguise behind a TV monitor (hilarious scene btw)

Rahul, the issue is not the chord progression but the blatant theft of melodies. There can be hundreds of songs with the same chord progression and each can have a different melody built on it. So copying melodies is still copying. All the examples highlighted in the video were melodies and not chord progressions. Of course there's only a limited number of scales and chord progressions. Melodies on the other hand can be endless

I agree with your distinction of Copy v Inspired but at the same time, have to admit a lot of songs have been sued for even less than this. Two incidents that come to my mind are 'Bittersweet Symphony' for it's prelude orchestra sued by Rolling Stones, Verve lost the battle and now all the royalty from that song goes to Rolling Stones rather than Verve and they never had a similar success ever. Second is Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice which uses the same hook tune in the beginning as that of Under Pressure by Queen ft David Bowie, rest of the songs are very different but that starting was straight up lifted by Vanilla Ice (there is a hilarious interview where he tries to prove that the tunes are different because he changed the key in one note)

Excelllent video. Finally someone points out the obvious. To those who are resisting I have a few things to say: 1> A simple question: A bullock-cart uses a wheel. A car uses wheel. An aeroplane uses wheel. Does that mean an aeroplane is a copy of bullock-cart? 2> Another question: How many of you critics can actually write down the notes of the song? Just because your brain registers similarity between 2 songs do not mean they are identical copies. 3> Imagination depends on memory. A person who has no experience of colour blue cannot imagine a painting with blue. A person who doesn't know french cannot write poetry in french. Every word that you guys are writing is in dictionary. So I guess your replies are a copy of the English dictionary. 4> Almost all great composers and artists have identifiable inspirations. Just because you are not aware of it, doesn't make it non-existant. The western classical music era was copyright free and full of liberal inspirations Bach freely used themes from Vivaldi and such. Mozart in a letter said about using a "memory bag of tunes" which his ears had picked up. Indeed Mozart has been accused of plagiarism many times. But his countrymen have always defendd him. Beethoven has remarked about making symphony movements based on something he heard being sung somewhere. Madan Mohan was accused by Sajjad of lifting his tune. Which Madan Mohan accepted and wittily replied "who can i copy but a genius like you". There used to be a 3 part video of both ARR and Ilayaraja and their inspirations by CineMafia/TamilMafia. Their fans got offended and took down those videos. Very few of Shakespeare's works are actually "original". Most of his works are remexis/remakes. For example, 'Romeo and Juliet' was based on an Irish poem which in turn was based on an Italian story. 5> Pritam did some blantant copies. He was naive. But he only did this kind of lifts till 2009. He has plenty of great works that are more or less original. Similar things can also be said about Anu Malik. Both Anu Malik and Pritam are great composers.

Almost all of the songs on this list are indeed copied. It would even classify as a copy even if directors are picking parts of the song. Most of the directors would take a catchy tune from a famous song and then build a song around it or change the tempo, change instruments or arrange musix slightly differently but having original parts in a song doesn't change the fact the copied parts were blatantly used without giving credits. Also it's not just rhythm that is common between these songs. Most of the chords progression are exactly the same.

@@bipra6032 If that's the hook of the song, or the most prominent portion, then the song is identified based on that. Of course, the whole song is not copied exactly, but that may have been the first part of the song to be made. The law is also clear on the same. Even if a part of the song is copied, it's illegal. When someone uploads a video saying that if some portions are copied it shouldn't be a big deal, it's an insult to the original creator who isn't credited with it. Whole heartedly agree. Inspite of I like him for analysis; sometimes it is flawed. For example he says that only two lines of Pal Pal appears copied. But it is ditto same, and for majority of listeners those lines are the identifier. And If out of 100; if 90 feels that it is copied, and then it is copied. second example. I have grown up with Didi of Khaled. When I heard Didi of Airlift; the first thing strike me was Khaled. And these are big musician [who has copied or got inspired], with this one flick of inspiration; they can make the whole song.
