Believe it or not, Entrapta was deliberately written to be autistic. The notion that you headcanon her that way (in lieu of this knowledge) must be a testament to how well it was executed. On the other hand, Dana Terrace, creator of The Owl House, only made Luz canonically neurodivergent. No specific diagnosis. I think ADHD tends to be a more popular headcanon for her than autism does. I headcanon her as both because I honestly can't tell them apart. Not telling them apart is one of the things that makes me wonder if I have ADHD on top of my formally diagnosed autism. If you haven't seen it, skulltrot did an excellent video that dives deeper into the way The Owl House writes neurodivergence. Like queerness, it's not just a character or two. It feels like it's more deeply woven into the show's universe and core messages. No wonder the show's one of my special interests.
@lotus.2772 жыл бұрын
i didn’t know that! yes i think entrapta was written very well. to me, making luz canonically neurodivergent meant there was an effort to make her that way rather than the coincidental traits of other headcanons i talked about, which is why i singled her out. but yes i headcanon her as also having adhd.

I remember reading somewhere that so many people were saying Luz was exhibiting signs of ADHD that Dana Terrace did say that was cannon. There is SO much overlap between the two, though, that reading Luz as both also does make a lot of sense.

benedict cumberbatchs comments on autism are interesting (in a bad way). What i gathered from it is he says making autistic characters who are smart or talented are giving "false hope" because there are some autistic people who are cognitively delayed and its not something thats possible for them. but it clearly shows ignorance of the fact that there are many autistic people who are very talented and make efforts to learn and overcome the obstacles of their disability and i honestly struggle to imagine anything more hurtful and messed up to say to them than that. you have to be very ignorant in the first place to make swooping statements about autism, like cmon dude of the first things anyone learns about autism is that its a spectrum.
@mathilda67632 жыл бұрын
I think the problem with the rare characters that are made with the intend to seem autistic...not only that they are often stereotypical white male...autism is also their thing. (except Entrapta and Donnie from rise of the ninja turtles, I like them) autism is not part of their identity it's the only big thing making them different from other characters and often the autistic traits are depicted as a weakness, laughable or a tragedy (like Sheldon for example)...which of course autism can be disability and we have support needs, but if you introduce a character in a story they should have a function in the plot. they should not be there just to be pitied and laughed at. characters that I head canon as autistic are often characters that play a viable role in the story and are integrated in their circle of friends and family. for example the golden trio in Harry potter...I head canon them all as autistic but they are not alone. they have friends that understand them. they can have relationships. they are not ridiculed for their interests most of the time. i want interesting characters that grow and have agency and at least some of them I would like to see being happy and accepted in what ever they choose to do with their life.

Ovens and dryers are the same sex, but different races/species; so are dishwashing machines and clothes washing machines; the oven is married to the dishwasher like how the washer and dryer are married. Also it’s common for laundry machines to be transracial and become a dishwasher/dryer, or vice versa. i remember when i said i thought a character was autistic, and someone replied saying something along the lines of 'she just had a bad childhood'. like. ok. thank you for proving my point even more, she would've been more accepted if she wasn't different. many many characters have autistic traits, more so than average in the real world. my theory is that autistic traits tend to be more conducive to storytelling. for example (stereotypes incoming), being an outcast, being much different from most others, struggling with social interaction, fidgeting, getting really excited about a specific thing. this obviously isn't the case with some characters, but almost every story has at least one character that can be easily headcanoned as autistic. maybe i naturally gravitate towards relatable characters, but i can't think of one example where this isn't the case (if someone thinks otherwise please tell me i'm curious). also apologies for the lack of proper grammar.

On the topic of MLP, Maud Pie has also been a character widely viewed as autistic - you can point to the monotonousness of her voice, her rock-fascination, carrying Boulder around everywhere and personifying him, and of course, her tendency to be literal about everything ("And what is the delightful frock you're wearing now saying?" "It doesn't talk, it's a dress.") And when Mudbriar later came along, comparisons to Sheldon Cooper were made rather quickly by several bronies - he's overall received mixed reactions from the autism crowd and fanbase in general. I see several comments have mentioned Rainbow Dash being autistic, who also came to my mind - though a particular moment I remember was when she wasn't comfortable with having her hooves touched by anyone else, even if just for a "hooficure", which looking back on it seems perfectly understandable as an ASD guy myself. Some people have also speculated Fluttershy as being on the spectrum, though I'm not so sure myself if she'd fit the bill as well as the other ponies mentioned here and in the video. Twilight and Pinkie Pie will always be among my very favourites from the show, autistic or otherwise, and I certainly can't blame anyone for constantly shipping them together! 😂😂

I've seen this in some obscure fandoms as well, and with things such as ADHD and personality disorders too. Or like, people getting offended that you dare say a character with canon abuse trauma and shows CPTSD symptoms in canon has CPTSD. Or people will like a character shown to be "fragile" in ways that are chronic illness symptoms or mimick an irl disability, but get offended the second you mention the words disability or chronic illness. In what way does it hurt you specifically if a character has traits that are relatable to someone on the spectrum and thus they headcanon the character as such, or any other disorder. Like, if I want to headcanon a character I relate to with my experiences as an autistic person with BPD and CPTSD as being autistic or having BPD, how does it harm you? If someone wants to headcanon a character has ADHD because the character has experiences similar to their ADHD experiences, how does that harm you? If someone sees their chronic illness/disability symptoms in a character and wants to headcanon them as having their chronic illness/disability, how does that affect you? (not @ you) Neurodivergent, mentally ill and disabled people exist and are normal people just like everyone else. While my cane gives it away that I'm disabled, and my autism is not masked well, I still have friends who like me, disability and autistic traits and all. And people would not be able to tell I have BPD unless I told them. (CPTSD on the other hand... I sometimes fall into the trap of CPTSD brain oversharing about trauma because it's been so normalized I have trouble seeing how it's different from stuff like when someone fell off a trampoline and broke their leg, or couldn't sleep for days after going to a haunted house as a kid). If it really "ruins" a character for you to learn that they're neurodivergent, mentally ill or disabled, then that's just ableism/saneism/etc. And to add two autistic headcanons of my own, Riddle Rosehearts and Trey Clover from Twisted Wonderland. Riddle - difficulty with humor (such as the oyster sauce incident), special interest is the Queen of Hearts, likes strict order, difficulty making friends, emotional disregulation and very picky with food (I also hc him as having BPD, and CPTSD from his upbringing, and those do affect his autistic traits and his autistic traits do affect his BPD and CPTSD traits) Trey - tries too hard in masking (tries so hard to give "I'm just a normal guy" vibes to avoid attention that other characters don't trust him and think he's a massive creep), special interest in teeth/dentistry, at times overly blunt, socially awkward and very expressive with "weird" facial expressions (such as the creepy ass smirk he does sometimes) (I also hc him as having BPD, and like Riddle, Trey's BPD traits and guilt trauma do affect his autistic traits and his autistic traits do affect his BPD traits and guilt trauma) Basically Riddle and Trey are autistic BPD boyfriends with trauma.

I think we need more special interests that aren't inherently "useful" to the story, or characters with having multiple special Interests! Especially having both hyperfixations and special interests also the funny thing that happens for me as someone with autism is I have high responsiveness to "emotion" as a concept, I can't pick out what the emotion is, if someone changes their tone to be more coarse, my brain just assumes it's bad, which I think is an aspect of low empathy that should be shown more, for me it can even cause panic where I start saying sorry too much to just end the Bad(tm) scenario on another note, I like to think Entrapta's gloves are a comfort item since she wears them even when not doing tech, like at the Princess Ball

On one hand, I understand why a lot of people suspect Wednesday may be autistic. I can imagine a lot of people relate to her not understanding certain social cues and going against the crowd. On the other hand, her portrayal is what many autistic people get stereotyped as: Monotone robots who lack empathy towards others. I’m autistic myself and I had a difficult time relating to her, mostly because her character came across as too mean-spirited at times. I tend to empathize so fully with others, even fictional characters to a fault. So, I ended up feeling too sorry for Enid after being strung along and having her gift tossed aside. Admittedly, I haven’t finished the series yet. So, there’s still a chance for her to turn things around. No spoilers please! Personally, I’d like to see more autistic characters who actually wear their emotions on their sleeves and aren’t afraid to show how much they care for others.

I headcanon Ned the pie maker from Pushing Daisies as autistic. Not a really known show, but a lot of the fans do agree about this. It was one of the main reason why it became one of my comfort shows, that, and because it's basically a feel-good show. I'm autistic myself, and have seen a few traits, that I also have, in him. Also, Ned is basically a himbo and they're my favourite archetype. This is something that Bryan Fuller seems to do relatively often, un/intentionally autsitic-coding his main protagonist, which later happened again for Hannibal with Will Graham.

For Abed (since I'm hyperfixated on this show and he's the best representation of myself in media i've ever seen) Community came out in 2009 Aspergers was still a thing in the first season, They've also used the terms "autistic", "social disorder", "neurodevelopmental disorder" and "on the spectrum" in the show usually it's him describing himself but he also had a friend that said something along the lines of the "neurotypicals don't understand us" I don't think he's diagnosed in the show but it's pretty canon he's self diagnosed at least

It pisses me off that people won't let others headcanon characters as neurodivergent, especially because as an ADHDer myself I saw a lot of traits in Wednesday that made me suspect she was neurodivergent (primarily autistic) and I headcanoned her to be autistic as I watched the series. I'm not finished with the video yet but great content so far! Edit: Hey, no one wants you to shut up. If I did I probably wouldn't have made it to the end of the video but I just did, and that's because I was interested in everything you wanted to say. Don't apologize for oversharing because I really appreciated the intricate details in the explanation behind every autistic character headcanon you had, the highlights helped me understand better (for example, I knew Twlight could be read as autistic but I didn't think of Pinkie Pie that way before- but your explanation made total sense for it!). I understand that living in a dominantly neurotypical society naturally makes us tend to put ourselves down, and that habit may be difficult to break- but I just felt like saying something about it because I felt like you spoke sorta negatively about yourself more than once in this video, and you're not being fair to yourself in that way. I just want you to know you're fine, I don't want you to shut up, and I really appreciate that you made this video. If you can, please try to be easier on yourself, okay? :) Btw, new subscriber lol

As a neurotypical, i actually find it cool that people headcanon certain characters as autistic. It helps for others to see that 1. Not all autistic people are the same and 2. That autism isn't a disease (like brain cancer is lmao?? Are people on tik tok okay???) It's a different way of processing things and seeing the world, and it ends up being a disability because of how the modern world is structured for neurotypical people (specifically the neurotypical people that fit certain criteria). But it's not inherently a bad thing, and i like how headcanons are a way to show that

Ahhh I love autistic hcs, and I'm glad you ended the video with sharing some of your personal headcanons. It got me thinking about some of my own, so I might as well share them now in the same kind of list form!! Emmet (pokemon black and white): Keeps to schedules and routines, difficulty reading his own actions socially, repetitive speech patterns and vocal tics, some hints of low empathy, and special interests in pokemon battles and trains. Ingo (pokemon black and white... And Legends Arceus): A lot of his traits are similar to Emmet's! Keeping to schedules and routines, special interests in pokemon battles and trains, lack of facial expression, and a lack of volume control. Kiyotaka Ishimaru from Danganronpa: INCREDIBLY strong sense of justice, adheres strictly to rules, black and white view on morality, lack of volume control, keeps tightly to schedules and routines, difficulty picking up on social cues, intense emotion and frequently overwhelmed to tears, hyper-expressive, has a self-assigned dress code, incredibly organized, struggles with (and does not see the purpose of) small talk, difficulty making social connections, low empathy, and highly formal speech the majority of the time. Honestly there's probably even more that I'm somehow forgetting (which is crazy because when it comes to this guy in particular I'm a walking encyclopedia)

While I usually hesitate to label anyone (let alone fictional characters whose characteristics can be hard to translate to the real world), I have to say it wouldn't be wild to say Wednesday has many autistic traits. And, I have to disagree incidentally autistic characters are necessarily better; it's just that many that are purposely so feel like a checklist for the diagnostic criteria with their autism beong their entire personality. As others have mentioned, Entrapts was actually deliberately autistic and, damn, do I find her one of the best representations out there. She's far from idealized, and, damn, does her Beast Island arc feel personal.

About the "art is subjective and anyone can interpret it as they want to" i highly agree on this but also it"s important to point out that if a creator states or gives hints a character is what they are that also should be respected, i myself wouldn"t like it if my queer characters would be headcanoned as straight or cis when i already stated or implied in my work they"re not, i"m sorry if this self explanatory or it"s something obvious to say but i still wanted to pointed it out, your video was really great Now that aside, my personal autistic/adhd headcanon character would be Tsukito Totsuka from the kamigami no asobi anime, sadly the anime is pretty short being only 12 episodes long but the few moments we get to see him i have found certain traits that could be on the spectrum such as overfocusing on things to the point he forgets his own physical needs and surroundings (he focused too much on his duties that he overworked himself) and also misreads social cues, i also think he could also be on the aroace spectrum as well coming from an ace person myself

A character i really like to headcanon as just generally neurodivergent is the doctor from doctor who!! Now, a brief explanation before someone comes at me about the whole human vs. alien thing: -the doctor is gallifreyan, and we see the rest of their species quite a lot throughout both the classic and newer series -in these portrayals, most other gallifreyans have so! many! contrasting! personality differences, behaviour, etc, etc. -basically if the gallifreyans were human they would be the neurotypicalest neurotypicals to ever neurotypical (exception is the Master) -and the doctor, if they were human, has so many very noticable neurodivergent traits in every single regeneration! -in conclusion, i think on gallifrey they would be considered neurodivergent :] Some of these traits shown include== impulsiveness, hyperempathy, no empathy, too much eye contact, no sense of rules, doesn't understand social rules (even of their own people), doesn't get gender (though that could be just from regeneration), has trouble hiding/regulating emotions, overstimulation, understimulation, struggles with money, extreme sense of justice, no dress sense (sorry haha), time blindness (even for a time lord), echolalia, hyperfixations, each incarnation seems to have their own special interest, etc., etc. Anyways, maybe you can tell that doctor who is my special interest (lmao), but i would love to discuss ideas about it :]

Also I see why autistic people would have a problem with this, before it became cool to compare yourself to Wednesday Addams that comparison set us back a lot.
