Here’s your top 5 favourite home hacks of 2024 so far! ✨ Which one is your favourite? 1. Spray furniture pads with perfume or essential oil and stick them in your drawers. It will keep them smelling fresh. Just add an extra spray when you notice the smell wearing off. Disclaimer: always research your preferred essential oils if you have pets as some can be toxic to animals. 2. Rub candle wax on your taps and buff it in with a cloth to prevent water marks for longer. The water runs straight off! 3. Deodorise and clean your washing machine drum by cutting a lemon in half, removing the seeds and squeezing a swirl of toothpaste on both before throwing them in the washing machine on a quick cycle. 4. Fill a spray bottle half way with water and add 20 drops of peppermint oil. Spiders and insects dislike the smell of peppermint so spray this around windows and doors to keep them out. 5. Deep clean your cloths by adding them to an old saucepan of water (make sure it’s not too full or it will bubble over. Sprinkle in 1/2 cup - 1 cup of bicarbonate of soda (depending on the size of the saucepan. Boil for 15 minutes before letting cool and rinsing with cold water. Wash with your usual detergent on a quick wash cycle and allow to air dry. Disclaimer: this method is for cotton cloths as it can shrink microfibre cloths but I personally didn’t notice this using this method

If you have cats (or other pets), please be very careful which essential oils you use! Great reminder. I used lemongrass-scented floor cleaner and had no idea it could irritate my cat's skin. I boil soapnuts and use that instead.
@_Hollie_5 ай бұрын
@@kathrynjckunfortunately a lot of the nicer smelling/more popular essential oils can be quite harmful to cats, like lavender, peppermint, lemongrass, cedar, eucalyptus. Honestly its pretty much all of them, there is also a lot of contradictory statements online about which ones are good that. Unfortunately i found out the hard way when one of my cats started having issues and i had to look into it. For the most part its safer if dilute, but i still had issues with my cat when i did very very weak concentration. Overall i just decided it wasnt worth it as it can really irritate their systems and at a certain point you cant smell or get the benefits from using them. Its better to be safe than sorry with pet health

learning that lemons are HIGHLY toxic to cats was something I hadn't known and wouldn't have thought of, I only asked about it because checking every damn thing before giving it had become habit since getting a cat for the first time in 20 years, wanted to make sure I was remembering right and not messing something up, so every time the kitten begged for something I was eating I would immediately go "hey Google, can cats eat.....?"

PSA: professional home cleaner here (3yrs) DO NOT under any circumstance use candle wax on taps there are products that are designed for this purpose. All you doing is putting a layer of wax on the tap and making it impossible to remove. Before any one comes at me with the idea of “just put hot water or steam the wax off” trust me it ain’t that easy to do since common household candle wax has so many chemicals and other nasties in it that stains the metal like a black permanent marker pen on a white shirt

Couldn't hear it either. However I learned to add baking soda to wash white towels, sheets etc. Either that or add white vinegar (additional to your laundry detergent.

It's probably better to just use bicarbonate of soda, as baking soda has other ingredients in it as well as the bicarb. I use ordinary 'washing soda' crystals to get stains and grease out of things like tea towels. And to clean tarnished silverware, lay it all on a piece of aluminium foil in a washing up bowl, and add boiling water and a few tablespoons full of washing soda. The foil and soda react together to remove the grime from the silverware, and the foil will go black. But don't leave in the water for more than about half an hour. Rinse well, then wash with soapy water, dry & buff to make the silverware shiny again.

Another tip- do not throw away empty cologne or perfume bottles, stick ‘em in your clothes drawer without the cover. It’ll smell great.

Yeah, don't. Instead, throw some junky bath towels in and soak them with white vinegar. Run a hot cycle. Done.
