To make holes like this, I use edge loops, Press them to the edge then precisely move them over. then you can just Extrude inwards. Way less convoluted.
@Keep-Making3 жыл бұрын
Hey Joseph that would add extra topology to the design which would make the over all shape unachievable without then having to go back and remove edges and then add more edges in the right place to define the chamfers and of course keep in mind that this is part of a tutorial series i'm teaching tools and techniques for MUCH more complicated designs, I doubt you would use an edge loop for a round hole or for adding more that 10+ holes in one time. I'm not saying that your method is wrong at all, as I do exactly what you are saying all the time. Just keep in mind the context of where this information is presented.

This is a really well done and informative tutorial and series. You have done a great job showing how blender can be usable for precision modeling. What I don’t get though, is why this is better than using Fusion360. Is it just that some people think this is more intuitive, or do you think there are use cases where this is a better tool?
@qupation72962 жыл бұрын
I think the whole thing with Blender is it's a long term Open Source proj that will eventually provide the whole 3D creative pipeline. Like from sculpting to this. I'm not familiar with Fusion, but I'm willing to bet it's way better than this. But Blender users stomach it because the future is bright.

I don't know what the deal is with CTL SHF RMB, but it does things TOTALLY different than what you're showing. IN face mode, it creates new faces. In vertex mode, it creates new vertices. I don't know Blender broke itself (again) or if there is some strange setting folks need to be aware of.

@kathleendunlap4373 жыл бұрын
Nice video as are all of the others previous to this one in your series. Thanks very much. I have a seemingly DUMB problem with this one that I can't seem to solve, however. After creating the 12x4.5 mm plane on top of the rectangular cube, you choose face selection and then move the small plane (using the G key and shift Z) away from the corner of the cube (and 2:56 or so). When I do that, the corner of the cube moves right along with the small plane even though I have selected only the small plane. Huh?
@Keep-Making3 жыл бұрын
hmmmm, sounds to be that you might have merged the reference vertex to the main body.
@bupp2912 жыл бұрын
I also had this problem and couldn't figure it out. I made sure all of my auto-merge options were turned off and, after two hours of googling things, my wife (who has about 3 hours of Blender experience) said, "have you tried pressing that button?" "What? No, that doesn't make sense." "Just try it." "Alright, I'll try it." Yup. My proportional editing was turned on just the -right- _wrong_ way to imitate the auto-merging of the vertices... My wife was very proud of herself 😏

@nicolasbassano36973 жыл бұрын
Hi Angela........thats because you probably have contiguous faces with flipped normals. Then the common edge for those faces doesnt know what to do. Checking "face orientation" on the overlay should help you see wich one is flipped.

Excellent video. Never used boolean from the face menu in edit mode. Very kool. I was forever making new object to then cut into my main object. Why do you start with a vertex and build your cube/rectangle? Is it to get the object origin on 0,0,0?
@Keep-Making3 жыл бұрын
Ya i was quite shocked when I first learnt about face boolean 😂 As for the manual face creation. I only do it so that I did not have to add a whole much a geo by doing loop cuts all over the mesh. Main reason why is because I wanted to show off / use a boolean operation for the first time to have some to reference back to when I show the boolean modifier in a bout 2 videos time.

Hey bro don't quads are used by 3D printing machines? Can you explain?
@Keep-Making2 жыл бұрын
For a 3D printering slicer, mesh is mesh... The first thing it's going to do is triangulate it and then check if it's manifold. SO the long and the short of it... for 3d printing the topology does not really matter it all matters is that it's defined through edges as you want it to be triangulated.

I thought the purpose of the new Extrude Manifold tool was to make pushing those hole faces into the base easy...similar to the Sketchup Push-Pull tool? But it doesn't seem to work like that.
@bill3923 жыл бұрын
I've found that the biggest problem with that tool is that it creates all sorts of duplicate vertices and non-joined geo. To solve the problems that exist after using it, I select the entire model and apply "merge by distance" and it fuses everything together the way you originally intended it to be. I use push/pull in SketchUp all the time and never have issues with it. My first time using it in Blender was a bit of a nightmare. Now, not so bad, but I've found that I tend to fall back to vanilla methods, like in this video, out of habit because I know what I'm going to end up with. Add-ons Meshmachine/MachineTools/HardOps mesh cleanup tools also work to fix things pretty well.
@Keep-Making3 жыл бұрын
I'll be showing how to use the Extrude Manifold tool soon. In a nutshell many people are misusing the tool and creating more problems than solutions in the long run. In reality the extrude manifold is actually quite a niche tool as it really destroys geometry and can make the use of any loop operations impossible after use.
@markcole45463 жыл бұрын
@@Keep-Making OK Thank you. I finally got the holes in and the part made even though the center loop cut refused to work for me as shown in the instructions. It would not follow the hole sides and instead made the loop directly across the top of the holes as if they weren't even there. Then Blender would create some messy extra faces over the holes. Eventually I just made manual cuts with the knife tool and everything worked properly. Thanks for another clear, informative tutorial.

Watching this made me sad. I'm a longtime Lightwave 3D and Sketchup user and have dabbled in Fusion 360. I've installed Blender every 5 years or so to check in on it and It's become quite a capable package but it still seems to be more of a digital art platform than something for makers. It's basic tools are weird - bevel is a bevel and a chamfering tool all in one (which is infuriating), loop cut/drag offers no precision at all (making boolean operations the only way to do this), there are no guides (even buying construction tools, which promises Sketchup-like workflow, doesn't work when you leave construction mode so snapping). There are a lot of great things about Blender but precision modeling doesn't seem to be one of them. Watching you model such a simple piece seemed really clunky and i kept thinking about how doing I would do it in the other packages that i know and it it seemed like it would require fewer clicks and would be faster. Sketchup would have been the fastest with no addons required,, Lightwave a close second (no addons required) and Fusion 360 would have been the most difficult (but not by much if using 3 sketches). I don't know... maybe i just haven't learned enough about modeling in Blender yet, but this workflow seemed really complicated to me.
