Love the first segment on holding the uke in a good position. It took me a while to figure out that the uke is also angled outward from the body as no one else seems to show the side angle. It relieved a lot of aches and pains on my left arm/wrist/elbow once I did so.

Refreshing to hear someone say there's more than one way to hold a Uke.

This was another great and useful lesson. My hold on my uke was about 80% correct, but never had I caught the importance of keeping the back somewhat free from the body. What a difference in sound! Also, the lack of sleeves was a new tip. Thank you for coming up with topics that make a difference to beginning students! .

I was in Hawaii in 2009 too! I was on my honeymoon with my hubby in February on the island of Oahu. 🌺🌺🌺

I have two questions. 1) Does your strumming arm (where it rests on the uke) hold the uke in position well enough to make complicated or quick chord changes for the other hand? You suggested that holding the neck in the space between the thumb and index finger is for that purpose. 2) As a beginner, I noticed early on that I lean over the uke and tilt the uke more so I can see the fret board because otherwise I wouldn’t know where to place my fingers. I feel the more educated my fingers get, the less I need to see where I put them. I’m assuming this is normal and kinda self-corrects over time, but would like your opinion on this. Thank you Matt for your lessons. You are a very talented instructor.

Hi Eddie! 1) It definitely helps brace and support it. It won't hold it in place for more than a moment, but that moment is usually all you need. 2) Yep, you are exactly right. Over time that will lessen and you'll depend on it less. I think it's important to note that even the best players look down at the fretboard from time to time, and that is ok. :)

I'm coming back to ukulele after a few years of playing guitar and mandolin, I've always just used a strap which makes it a doddle to hold it, just wondering why you don't like them, loving your videos though

Thank you for the kind words! A strap is fine to use, but it can become a crutch, where you have to rely on it.

Where did you get your uke with the numbered frets? Is it a custom job? I'm a middle school music teacher and about to start teaching ukulele to my students (focusing on strumming and chords, not nearly as in depth as Rock Class 101), and this seems like it might be helpful to have to demonstrate (if it's not too expensive). Thanks for the awesome lessons!

Hi Kelby, it's a custom made Kanile'a. They are expensive ukuleles. Reach out to Mike at: www.ukerepublic.com/ He might know of a more affordable brand ukulele that offers numbered fret markers. Tell him RC101 sent ya 😊 And TY for the kind words!

Try to keep your thumb placed slightly above the middle of the neck. Check out this article and video for extra help with proper left hand form: rockclass101.com/proper-left-hand-ukulele-form/
