When an experienced runner decides to train for a 100-mile ultramarathon in a hostile desert, he must face the daunting task of doing something that seems impossible.
Like the runner, we on Earth must face our own great adventures, traversing a seemingly endless array of life’s peaks and valleys, in our journey back to God. But as we do so, pushing through the darkest trials and obstacles, we gain perspective about why we are here and how to ultimately succeed.
In his 2019 general conference address, “Your Great Adventure,” (bit.ly/3avDWrc) Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf explains that “as you remain on the path and trust in God, you will eventually find the way to your glorious destiny and back to your heavenly home.”

As a long distance runner myself, I learned this - at the moment that you first think “I’m done”, you’re only about 15% done. Just put one foot in front of the other, one stride at a time. You’ll be amazed how far you can actually travel. A lesson that applies to life in general.

Same principle in labor and childbirth... I've been thru it 8 times, 6 completely natural. I get to several points of "I'm done", but just when I think I absolutely cannot go thru one more contraction, the baby comes. Amazing.

I watch this over and over again.. I am a father of two and have been unemployed for about 1 year. I've tried many things but been failed every time. I studied come follow me and watched this video with my wife this morning. Now I watch this alone again. God, it is way too hard for me unfulfilling a duty as a dad and husband. It is a real pain. I want to give up sometimes, honestly. My prayers do not seem to be heard. But this video teaches me to keep going. Will this ever be done..

I hope you're feeling better by now, man. I just wanted to say that even though it might not feel like it, simply being a loving, caring dad is, in many ways, enough. Even in times when you (or anyone else in need of this message right now) can't provide in terms of putting food on the table, you can always put on a smile, lend an ear or give a hand. The power love has to transmute and transform is like nothing else.

It reminds me of Harry Potter and The Order of The Phoenix (well I haven't read that book, but this is in the movie) when Harry is questioning whether or not he is a good person because at times he has wanted to do bad things and he can hear Voldemort's voice and knows that part of Voldemort is inside of him. He tells this to Sirus who responds with a quote that is similar to what it said in the video about how "it's your choices that show who you truly are, far more than your abilities".

This video means a lot. It definitely resonates with me. As a small business owner who was feeling the stress of business ownership in January 2020, I thought that that was the toughest I was going to have it. Turned out God had lessons for me to learn. But as I have had to traverse this crazy road, I have come closer to Him than I ever have been, and am a stronger person than I ever thought I would be. I too have learned the importance of life being a marathon and not a sprint. I'm still pushing forward, and bit by bit I see my business moving in the direction I always believed that it would. He has truly blessed me in the storm. Thanks for the video.

But what if your business didn't move in the direction you always believed it would? Or what if, for a time, you believed it should move in a different direction? I have goals too; and more than ten years taking paths others or I thought were right for me. I feel the Lord pushing me in a direction, yet nothing seems to arise from my efforts. I pray for a miracle every day, for loaves and fish. I know I'm no where near Joseph Smith or Christ, in terms of trials and tribulations. But they knew their purpose, and I'm not doubting you. I'm just struggling with mine.

After my divorce this is my life now just without the running in the desert. That is all i can do now is to just not give up on Christ and the things he wants me to do to return to our Heavenly Father. Some days it is so hard to not give in to the negative thoughts. But the lord has been there for me even when i do not feel worthy of his attention.

I thought I could not handle it after two divorces and losing my membership. I didn't know why it was taking so many years to get back but when I finally gave up everything that was my own efforts (not truly relying on Christ), I have everything restored and all is falling into place again. May you and everyone going through it be blessed, and when you don't give up on Jesus Christ to the end, that is the best thing you could ever accomplish in mortal life!

I’m in the process of a divorce right now. All the advice I can give is when life seems completely wrong and everything is falling apart, tell God what you are thankful for. Ask for strength, ask to see his hand in your life, ask for forgiveness, and then list at least 10 things you are grateful for. If you can’t think of 10, think of 5. If you can’t think of 5, think of 1. I understand the feelings completely so I know how dumb it might sound to look for things to be grateful for, but I promise it will bring you peace if you rely on the lord. Choose one bad habit and work to give it up in return for that peace. The sheer amount of blessings will astonish you if you’re watching. Much love brother

This video reminds me of who we are as spirits having a human experience. At the beginning we choose to come down and experience it all, and at first it’s so beautiful and exciting! We can go through many trials and setbacks and even fall away sometimes. But, we must choose to keep running. Keep going. Keep running home to Him.

A lot of my minor issues spring from the major one. I'm in this whole situation by being obedient to the answer to prayer. To the LDS media team: Thank you for your uplifting content (I know these kinds of projects take a great deal of planning and work). It seems like any other media these days has a political agenda or has content that is not conducive to feeling the spirit. I look forward to your messages because I know they have one purpose - to inspire us to be better - to be like Jesus Christ. Keep up the great work! P.s. I know someone who used to be an intern for the New Era (or one of the other magazines). She told me that most of the letters her team received were, more often than not, negative/complaints. I'm sure you know this, but I like to think most of us are extremely grateful for what you all produce.

Hi Tyler. Did you ever receive revelation as to why you had to go through the difficulties? Are you on the other side of it and can see where He was leading you? I often find myself pondering on things past and I see Him in it and it makes more sense in hindsight. Right now I just can't see and then I saw your post and I wrote down your revelation and I hope to have one of my own. I pray Heavenly Father blesses you and keeps you and shines His face upon you and gives you peace. Love, Your sister in Christ

@@l.a.howard1800 I just saw this post (been four months). Sorry I haven't responded till now! Right now I'm in the thick of the trial again and have been through this cycle of wondering why again do I have this trial again and why is it so hard... but I always circle back to that feeling that I had. That this isn't meant to be easy, "but I'm with you if you look for me." The more I look to Him and trust Him and give this trial to Him, the more I find Him lifting me. The way he has been lifting me is with connection to good people. Recognizing I can't do it a lone. I've been amazed at the people God has put in my life to help me get through tough times. If you are ever feeling alone or down. Reach out to Him and trust Him and then start putting one foot in front of the other. He will start putting people in your life that will have significant impact and will help you improve. Trust Him and live.

For me, life has always been a struggle, the family I was born into had issues. As I have grown up with out my real Dad in my life had been something of a heartache for me,never feeling whole and completely loved. I rarely spoke as a child, and was put in special education because of it and other factors! For me I have always wondered if I wasn't who I needed to be in the pre mortal life, and the Lord sent me to a family that barely had the gospel in it! But my heritage is one of great importance to me, though my family had only one active member ,my grandmother's the one who put the gospel in my life, and for that I will be forever greatful ! My family history is one that starts with the beginning of the church, having family that knew the prophet Joseph Smith, but with ancestry in the church dosent mean it will keep you on the straight and narrow and give you a testimony! A testimony is something you must have a desire to have and work for! I feel the church is the most perfect part of my life, and perfection is important to me,though it's impossible to ubtain in this mortal life, I continuely strive to push myself to do better, to do more of those things that are pleasing my Heavenly Father! I feel he has sent me to my family to be a spiritual example and that I'm the one that has done there Temple work for them!

I could not love this more. Any who have trained for marathons or ultras have likely experienced many of these same extremes. It is exhilarating and painful. Some days you are on top of the world and on others you seem to barely be able to put one foot in front of the other and you have know idea why. Prayer becomes an integral and reflexive part of your life during the rough phases. Gradual conditioning, varying your exposure, continuity, training partners, measured and intentional exertion, and a thick skin to ward off the doubts of the naysayers are all beautiful commonalities between distance running and our mortal probation.

your comment made me smile! For two reasons, I'm the opposite so it is running find hard! But I also like that you flipped around the most obvious struggle, we can do that with most of the things we initially see as a struggle, just by looking at the opposite -eg. half full glass!!! thanks

I ran long distance in high school. I NEVER placed in the top, but I finished ✅️ every race I started. I struggle with depression (especially feeling self worth). I have soo many times thought it was too overwhelming & want to give up or just get off the roller-coaster! One of those times the spirit helped me remember something I told myself on those runs "Just focus on 1 foot & another. U can do the next step". I finished races I wasn't sure I was able to do back then & since the prompting have used it for some of Life's problems too!

With faith in Jesus Christ just put one foot I front of the other. Man...that’s how I feel right now. And that is how I am achieving things I never thought I could. This video is so on point. Thank you God, Heavenly Father for inspiring others to help people like me.

That’s amazing! And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” ‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭12:2-3‬ ‭NIV‬‬

"I could spend a lifetime waiting for a moment when everything lines up perfectly, waiting for everything to fall into place. But now I know I don't have to. Now I know that all I have to do is take courage, and with faith in Jesus Christ, just put one foot in front of the other." This was a message I really needed to hear, since - as a perfectionist - I also tend to treat life as a sprint, giving and pushing until I feel like there's nothing left. But that's not what it is. Life is a marathon. 💙

Stop praying for a flat, easy path. That's not what life is about. I've been dealing a ton of problems lately. It sucks because I don't have somebody to confide with. But Heavenly Father listens to me. He validates me. He is the ultimate Friend we all need.

As long as you put one foot ahead of the other ( like walking ) you’ll always Go as far as you want. Even when people doubt you just ignore them. When you believe in your self and push your self you can shoe those people that you can do anything you put your mind to. I love this because he believed in him self. But when times get tough you need to keep going. Not everything is going to go the way you want it to go. I love it when he said not everything in the world is meant to be perfect. I love this because it shows reality. And it shows that not everybody is perfect. Even if you start to doubt yourself and lose faith in your self. Find the faith you have left on your self and go for it so you make more. If everything was perfect and fell into place you wouldn’t have challenges.

This message is exactly what my heart was longing for. I am so very thankful for a God who loves us, knows us and will always be there for us. There will always be a way, you have everything you need because God believes in you and you are His and that's enough. Find your courage press forward and rise up; that's the great test of the journey

Wonderful message. My long distance running has taught me more about God than most anything else in my life. Each of us can access the divinity within us, when we just keep trying, putting one foot in front of the other, reaching for our unique potential, That is enough. That is what He wants for his children - our progress. It's not about the destination - that was Satan's plan. It's about the journey and our individual growth. That was His plan. We need more messages like this, and less messages about toxic unreachable perfectionism in our Church culture. These are the messages that will inspire, uplift, and help more people stay in the Church. Well done.

This is such a great and true message wether you are religious or not. I just want to say that I know that the Lord gives us trials so that we can be stronger and so that we can have experiences. I know that he has a plan for us and that if we have trust in him he will lift us up and we can accomplish things that we thought were never possible and I say these things in our Lord and savior Jesus Christ amen

This was amazing! I had a huge need to hear this today. No matter how many times I fail in my life I know that God will somehow help me to turn my life into something magnificent and beautiful. He can and will do that for each of us in turn. When we don't think we can go on he will give us the strength we need.

Interestingly enough, this video came out on the day I completed the Mountain Phase of U.S. Army Ranger School, as well as the day my son was born. It was an extremely bitter-sweet day, to say the least. Yet, as this so powerfully illustrates, we can find a tremendous amount of meaning in our suffering. And, as we learn to endure greater amounts of suffering, we are better able to help other 'runners' along the way.
