100% wrong Stephen A!!!!! First and foremost it's the coach's responsibility to create and uphold team culture. Tomlin has allowed that to slip away and from that, he's losing control of his team. That's 100% on the coach. Second, they're called the Pittsburgh Steelers, not the Ben Roethlisberger Steelers. TEAMS win and lose. You can have (personally) a phenomenal year...have great individual stats but your team can still fall short. You can totally give it your all and put forth 110% effort and still lose out - after all only 1 team gets to hold the Lombardi Trophy - which means 31 teams fell short or failed. Ben's final 2 years as a "statue?" 2020: 33 TD, 10 INT....2021: 22 TD, 10 INT for a combined, 55 TD, 20 INT. Nearly a 3:1 ratio of TD/INT. Any QB (EVER) would take that, especially in their last 2 years as a "statue." The fact that the Steelers playoff record wasn't as good in Ben's second half of his career as it was in his first half had nothing to do with Ben. No one ever accused Ben of taking a play off or slacking or not playing "the Steeler way."

Stephen A. couldn't be more wrong on this. Ben was very vocal in passing the torch and the local media covered it often. Maybe he didn't have the best relationship with Mason Rudolph but he went to great lengths to make sure guys like Cam Heyward and Najee Harris took that torch and kept it going, and he has been in touch closely with Pickett. There is almost no one else left from Ben's tenure in that offense currently. The Steeler way started to fade when they hired a guy who didn't understand as head coach in Mike Tomlin and every player from Cowher's team that left took a little of the culture with them. This is not on Ben, he is one of the few the kept it as long as he did.

Stephen A is saying Ben was very selfish & put his own ego above the culture of the Steelers. Ben REFUSED to help Mason Rudolph at all in Ben’s last years. Ben HATED on Kenny P and wanted him to fail most of his rookie season because Ben didn’t want the Steelers to win without him. Ben was so selfish, according to former teammate Max Starks, he demanded Arians change the SB game plan to a pass heavy scheme even though the Packers were the worst run defense that year, all because selfish Ben wanted the SB MVP award. As the greatest QB in franchise history, Ben is partly responsible for “passing on” the tradition to QBs that followed him which he REFUSED to do.

There's nothing wrong with his take. Let's go to another sport for a comparable situation: the NBA. Specifically, Kobe Bryant. Hall of Fame credentials, the closest to Jordan we have experienced since Jordan...no one is challenging his greatness. The reason I bring up Kobe is because, like Ben, stayed too long for about as long. His last three seasons with the Lakers, in order: 25-57, 21-61, 17-67. Am I suggesting they both should have retired when their skills diminished? Only if they are unwilling to actively participate in the transitions necessary to keep the franchise competitive, such as mentoring and facilitating for the less-experienced personnel. They have their success, they have their accolades, they have their accomplishments. What they needed to do was pass it forward, and neither of them did a great job doing that. So, yes, they both should have just retired when it was clear they didn't have it any more, because the hole they created when they finally did retire makes for that much more work to be done to get back to the level when they were simply good.
@rc8330 Жыл бұрын

Smith Steven A Praises Tomlin nonstop but has notoriously repeatedly bashed Mike McCarthy over the years. Newsflash, McCarthy's career stats as HC are almost identical to Tomlin's. AND, McCarthy's playoff record over the last 10 years is better than Tomlin's. Wonder why Steven A bashes one coach and not the other. Hmm. Gee, almost seems like Steven A doesnt know anything unless it serves his agenda. Who would have guessed. SMH.

This is a good take by SAS. Ben used to always throw shade at the coaches. He was never held accountable because fans accepted anything from him. I'm glad SAS listed his stats. Fans complain about those stats for Tomlin, but they don't hold Ben to the same standards. Let's not act like the offense didn't used to stall in the red zone, under Ben's leadership. Ben is right that a leader is needed on offense. However, Ben is throwing stones from a glass house. #HereWeGo

He's right! Once a player leaves. Influence leaves. Ben could come even do a pep talk, wouldn't help.
