I journal every day. Not only because I used to do it as a kid when I would write my cringe little stories/ideas, I soon gained the muscle memory of *needing* to do so and with my ADHD it’s also how I stim. Also helps with memory management and time blindness. I struggle a lot with that. ❤

I'm a very outgoing person, but, life being life, I haven't always been able to be the same level of outgoing and have close friends in every phase of my life. I ended up journaling the most when I'm lonely and don't have someone close I can confide in. This has led to the unfortunate consequence that now, when I read my journals, they're often a collection of my sad, lonely moments - because when I'm happy, I'm used to sharing that happiness with someone real, not a journal. So yeah, in my view, "not being able to journal" is not necessarily a bad thing. It could be a sign that everything is going okay right now and you don't need an additional support system. :)

yes!!! don’t set any crazy rules for yourself, it’s just going to be chaotic if you do. do it when you enjoy it, there are no guides or rules to journaling! ALSO THANKS!!! He’s my OC named Asteroid!

Yeahhh especially those that try to start out with making all the cute aesthetic journaling spreads etc. That can be overwhelming real quick or just end up doing a few art collages and leave it at that. Not that it isn’t effective at all but for many beginners that can be too much

What are your thoughts on common place books, and how they interact and affect how you and others journal? I know in your video titled, "you don't want to make art as badly as you say you do." you discuss using the journal to find and look for inspiration, and I know a lot of people who use common place books do the same kind of thing. I think there is a lot of interesting intersectionality between all the different methods for journaling, ie, common place, scrapbooking, visual journal, art journals, traditional diary type journaling.

i consider my journal right now to be a commonplace book! i use it as a traditional commonplace book and also as a journal, sketchbook and planner. i think for me commonplacing is just gather any information about me and my life and it works well for me. i think commonplace books are a good place to start if you don’t know what kind of book you want to keep.

I recently watched a video of a creator going over how they structured their common place book and I found the way they documented their events, thoughts and general ideas very interesting. I think a lot of people are so hesitant to actually develop a solid journaling habit because they're trying to do what they see other people doing and it isn't working for them, and it can be really difficult to find what works if you're only letting yourself do what works and fits into someone else's life. The video I watched was "☾ a commonplace book flipthrough and system update!" by dandelion
