I got a copy of this movie and made a cast mold of my hand and wrote the same message for my ex as a birthday gift. It was a long distance relationship, and it was my way to keep our connection close at the time. She never bothered to watch the film but kept the mold close to her. Was probably the last I ever gave a homemade gift like that to anyone.

Yes, it is implied that the grandma had experienced the same body switching dreams, just like mitsuha and taki. That's why she can recognise if Taki is in Mitsuha's body or not. But the sad part about the grandma is that she never found the person she was body switching with in real life😔

⁠@@MeisterdiebKidyes, it's heavily implied that at least one women from each generation of Mitsuha's family were body swapping with another person when they were teenagers, but just like how Mitsuha and Taki were originally never meant to meet each other in real life, all of them eventually stopped swapping bodies with their counterparts, and over time they forgot about their counterparts entirely and the whole experience were chucked up as a dream, Taki were the first one to broke this cycle by drinking Mitsuha's Sake and forcing a swap one last time to alter history

@@ariqsyafwan4987 I don't know if taki was the first. Watching the movie i really felt that Mitsuha's father actually is the one guy who swaped bodies with her mom. He don't get this backstory but, assuming the women on her family experience that in every generation. I think Mitsuha's father actually experienced the body swapping but, as everyone, forgot mostly of it. But, in that scene where Taki confronts him in her boty, i was under the impression that he actually recognized that Mitsuha wasn't acting "Mitsuha like". He ask directly "who are you?" and we get a shot of Taki being surprised, just as the grandma scene. Like, Whem the movie ends, isn't implied that they remember all, just that they as sparkled by each other faces and knew they should meet each other. It's like, the remember the feeling, but not the history. It kinda makes sense, since Mitsuha's father "don't cared about Myamizu temple, just her mom".

I love the subtleties that indicate when the two switch like how they sit, rolling off the bed because she's used to a futon and even the difference in feminine and masculine forms of address. And it blows my mind how they recreated Tokyo in an animated movie. It's one thing to film an actual location but the effort to draw the details of a location in different angles is a different challenge altogether

It's realistic enough that there are tours in Tokyo of the areas that are recreated in the film.

It helps to keep track of the timeline. The dates appearing on calendars, wall posters, etc. show that the comet hit in 2013 and Taki experienced the body-swapping in 2016 (the year of the film's release) with Mitsuha from 2013. In the meeting on the crater rim, Taki-in-Mitsuha was in 2013 while Mitsuha-in-Taki was in 2016 as indicated by the background art with one lake (2013) or the double lake (2016). Through some magic they could hear each other through that 3-year gap. Then at twilight Mitsha-in-Taki is transported back in time (bodily) to 2013 so they can see each other and interact. At the same time they are returned to their own bodies for the physical meeting, which we must infer from the dialog. When twilight ends, Taki is transported back to 2016 and Mitsuha is left to fix everything on her own. When she tells Tessie "I saw it with my own eyes" (referring to the comet striking the town), she is correct. At this point her mind remembers everything that happened in that first timeline, including her own death, and everything going forward through the magic of Musubi. Then, 8 (or 5) years later, it is 2021 and Taki is looking for a job. It is the anniversary of the destruction of Itomori, therefore October 2021 as he takes a walk with Okudera. Then we see rain (typical of early winter, 2021) and Tessie and Sayaka planning their wedding. Then snow and the near meeting of Taki and Mitsha on the bridge. In the following montage, we see winter melt into spring (so now it i s 2022) and cherry blossoms on the ground. Yotsuha is in high school now and we se her still in her pigtails. Finally we have the meeting of Taki and Mitsuha on the staircase, presumably in the late spring or early summer of 2022. Makoto Shinkai says that we may assume they get married in 2023. The only thing this movie failed to predict was the pandemic. In 2021 Japan when Tessie and Sayaka were planning their wedding, they both would have been wearing masks. The opening musical montage of the movie spoils the ending if you think about it. It shows both Taki and Mitsuha transforming into adults. Also the opening narration ("Sometimes I wake up crying...") would not make sense if Mitsuha was irrevocably dead from when the comet hit. Of course that only establishes that she lives. It says nothing about whether they will ever meet.

Most of Makoto Shinkai's previous 5 movies were variations on the same theme; a longing for a past romantic relationship that is never consummated. This was his first movie with a happy ending, where the girl and boy end up together.

"Your Name" is one of my most favorite films. I dragged so many friends to watch it in theaters back then. I'm glad you enjoyed it! I've probably seen it a couple dozen times now, but it still makes me tear up watching it. If you get a chance, check out "Suzume" which is the latest film by the same director. I really enjoy that one, too.

It is suggested that the switching is something that happened in that family, so it’s possible that Mitsuha’d parents had swapped, which is why he felt the connection to her when they met which was enough for him to abandon his academic life.

Absolutely a piece of art, the whole movie is a mix of emotions, unbelieveble sceneries, details and a great plot. When anime is good, it's REALLY good :) Excellent choise :) They had to forget each other, as grandma said at the shrine that to return they had to leave something precious there and their memory of each other was that.

Makoto Shinkai's projects are always visually stunning.. Go back as far as hie earliest works and you can see his style and the development as it goes.. The first I encountered was "The Place Promised In Our Early Days" and it became a creative bromance from that point on.. lol. This film has a special place for all the amazing heartfelt moments, things I aspire to capturing in any writing I might attempt, but beyond his art style Shinkai is a creative who's very much in touch with the heartbeat of any story he goes for. More tidbits.. Taki and Mitsuha make cameo appearances in Shinkai's following anime "Weathering With You". A brave effort trying not to cry, but only a tiny, tiny minority go untouched by this flick..

As far as Easter eggs and clues in this movie Easter Eggs: Mitsuha’s teacher is from the same director’s short film “The Garden of Words” which is also the name of the Italian restaurant in this movie. Clues: In various moments we can see in the background or at least not centered that they are out of time such as looking at the day of the week when they’re both scrolling through their journal apps, the models of the iPhones, calendars in the background, and Taki dressing for school when it’s the weekend when they go to the shrine.

There's also something I saw mentioned somewhere about feelings of love being protected by the god of the moon which is why Taki's I love you didn't disappear Mitsuha was going to also write I love you on Taki's hand. She started writing it with the same horizontal line that he had done and her name doesn't have that line starting it

I don't really understand why in the final scene on the stairs Taki and Mitsuha at first walk past each other without recognition, when they were frantically searching for each other. Was it that they forgot again what each other looked like?

In the scene where Mitsuha grabs her father by the tie and he asks, “Who are you?”, it’s not that the father knew about the body swaps; it’s more of a cultural issue: In Japan, especially in smaller and more traditional towns, the paternal figure is extremely respected, and it is inconceivable for a young person to act with violence or hostility towards an adult, not even verbally, much less physically. In this case, not only is it a young person, but it is a woman, his own daughter, and none other than the sweet and very well-mannered Mitsuha. That is why such an attitude is SO disconcerting for her father. Simply put, that was not Mitsuha.

I don't really know any easter eggs or anything about this film. Just that the director (Makoto Shinkai I believe) makes these types of films. They are usually romance dramas and are always visually gorgeous. This one got really famous and it deserves it as it just a gorgeous romance thats great to experience. A great anime movie to show a non-anime fan to. I would recommend "A Silent Voice" after this. They get conpared a lot because they not only are really great drama's and both are not onlyvisually gorgeous but they even came out the same year lol. Out of the two I prefer "A silent Voice" a bit more as I think its a bit more emotionally powerful but both are fantastic. Chances are if you like one you will like the other. You could also check out some of Makoto Shinkai's other films too for more gorgeous films like "Voices in a distant past" (I think thats what its called) or "5cm per second" just to name a few.

I love this movie so much! Whenever someone asks me for recommendations, this is usually the first or second one I say. Makoto Shinkai is a master of his craft! This is the first in what people have dubbed his natural disaster trilogy, romances set around a natural disaster with magical realism. I highly recommend the other two Weathering With You and Suzume, although this is certainly the best of the three. I loved the time-travel twist of this movie. The scene at twilight on top of the crater ridge never fails to make me cry. Taki and Mitsuha are wonderful characters who feel real and outside the mold of what a lot of romantic, high school-aged kids are like. And a really great detail is the line Mitsha drew on Taki's hand was not any part of her name. So she was going to write "I love you " too. God, I love this movie so much!
