Makoto Shinkai meant a lot to me as an anime fan. I personally don't share with your views on his other works, and that's fine. However for my case, his worlds are so grounded and realistic yet so fantastical and hard to reach. They have an air of wistfulness and emotion that isn't present in other films, and it's really helped make me fall in love with his works and other romance stories. Thanks to him, I took a step further into who I am and how I love anime, and I thank him for helping me see more beauty in the world. Great vid dude. :3

@@LordZetera00 I haven't seen Lake House. Need to check that out. I do think that reducing Your Name to a tale of body swapping does not do it justice, however, as what makes narrative of Your Name great, in my opinion, is the broader plot of how the priests of Musubi in Itomori devised a plan to save the people of the village 1,200 years in the future, and the mysterious ways in which the plan came together despite the original shrine having been destroyed and the plan itself having been forgotten save for the ties of the Miyamizu family with traditions (the film hints heavily for example that the kumihimo braids carry a message or spiritual connection from the ancient priests of Musubi) and the strange events that seem to afflict members of that family.

When I am having a day, not a bad or a hard day, just one of *those* days. I listen to the soundtrack for this movie. Every single song, not just the one with words. I just ride the the train or am working on something and the music just plays in the background and I feel that in the back of my mind I am visualizing the film. I think if every person on the planet saw this film ( I know this is a ridiculous statement) and I am not saying that every person would like it of course, but if every one did see it, I think the world would be a better place. I'm probably not correct with that, but it just gives me that faith and naive world view and sometimes I think people need that.

I watched this quite late than the rest of my friends. At that point, nothing actually surprises me anymore in storytelling. I got to a point that I've read a lot of books and watched a lot anime/tv shosws/movies... different types of narratives that I have this habit of predicting how it will end so I end up being emotionally detached or if it's good, I'll just be shedding a tear or two. And since Your Name was so popular, I "kinda" predicted how it was going to end (how they're gonna meet at the end because the stairs scene was everywhere) and I thought I was prepared. I thought I expected it and I thought I had my emotions checked. But by the end when the music started playing and the title was displayed, I started bawling my eyes out, with the heavy gasp sobs. I was a mess. I was trying to keep myself intact. I was crying so hard and I can't even understand why I was breaking down that bad. I remember I was asking myself over and over and over "Why are you crying? What made you cry? Was it the general plot?" and I also answer "No it's not that!" and I just keep on asking myself "Why are you crying?" and I just keep on answering " I don't know!". I was just trying to rationalize everything and was trying to understand what hit me, and why I was a mess. And until now, I have no words to explain what this movie made me feel.

I have seen this movie almost 10 times now and every time I see it there is not a shred of boredom that we get when we are rewatching a movie or a show. There's that, now I've had my own views about the movie and I have seen countless other reviews and such but you my friend, are something else entirely too ! The way you went through Shinkai's history before the intro rolled in was just too good. I have been reading the 'underrated' comments here and I couldn't agree more. Kudos to you, for your efforts in making this video, I tried to educate people to make them watch this movie as a 'film' and not just animation but I failed. Thank you so much for Arkada. This is really wonderful as usual, and your passion for the subject material shines through is such a wonderful way that really is heart touching. Giving full disclosure though... I really didn't enjoy this film. I think part of it was my mindset at the time, and how part of it is just that romance isn't my genre, and part of it being that concepts of soul mates (the red string) I hate quite a bit; It's all culminated in just an overwhelming "Meh" towards the movie. That's not to say that there was nothing I enjoyed. Like you pointed out, Shinkai's mastery of just visuals was breathtaking, and his sound design was perfectly on point, but the story itself just was convoluted (I recognize the irony of saying that about a film rooted in both science fiction and mysticism). Spoiler Free. The film to me was incredibly predictable to me until the scene after the comet actually does come around (you know the moment), at which point the film actually really gained my interest for an extended period of time, but then everything from the shrine onward just lost me. It wasn't even the lack of explanation, but the apparent arbitrary rules of how things "worked" and how things faded that grated on me. Again, no spoilers in case someone chooses to actually read this long winded comment. I think in the end I must be one of the few people in the world that walked out of the theater feeling worse than I had going in, and haven't seen it since. Sorry for the long winded comment. I just have strong, slightly acid tinged feelings towards the film and the amount of praise it does get for things I do not always feel it has earned. Thank you for the beautiful review and for all the work that you do, and thank you for letting me post this.

I watched “Voice of a Distant Star” when I was a child as well and was so moved by the emotions so-well executed in a very first effort of a genius. The art was beautiful, the music pulled at everything heart string, the narrative poetic. I could tell he still has to gain more experience, but the potential is so visible. Thereafter, I never watched any other films of his until “Your Name.” I even forgot to notice it was his film; I was simply intrigued by the description. I also underestimated the film and what it could be. It was so beautifully, meticulously, thoroughly created - truly an art piece, a sci-fi pondering, a wondrous exploration few have achieved in films (not just anime films). "Your Name" is a movie I almost saw by accident with absolutely no clue about Makoto Shinkai nor about his previous work, a couple of months ago. With my friend, we were immediatly struck at first by the depth of the mystery and the relationship the two youngsters are buidling, not only between themselves, but also, within their own life to make it more enjoyable. The twists which occurred during the second part made us totally breathless and more and more lost, until we were about to lose hope about the two and stopping wondering what the issue would be, because it had become impossible to predict. All in all, it is a movie what I did not expect which totally put me in, with a lot of depth and intricate themas, like the new Japan versus the old Japan which is more embodied by the village girl dreaming about Tokyo, very easthetics and dary all the same. I was happy to see your review of it because not everyone seems to be happy about this movie and I was curious to see a real analysis.

I don't know why I'm writing this really, maybe just thinking out loud.. I'm just glad other people like this too I guess? Idfk, thank you for making this video though.

I mean, it is, but it doesn't always have to be. It's quite refreshing to be reminded of this movie after all the hype has died down. It reminded me of how the movie, as well as other Shinkai movies, made me feel. I'm not sure I'd have liked this as much, had it come out sooner. Like, "oh, another Your Name video........"

Lol, so he recommends A Silent Voice, which is infinitely harder to get in the U.S. than your name. Thankfully there are some rental options for your name. You can rent and stream it from Amazon for a semi-reasonable fee. But good luck watching A Silent Voice without pirating (or importing and dealing with potential region lock issues).

@@SyrianSoaper I guess you missed the point of the original post. There is still no company with distribution or streaming rights for a popular 2016 anime movie in the US, which is ludicrous. Honestly though I found Your Name to be pretty much everything you were describing about his other works - pretty but ultimately hollow and devoid of a cohesive plot. Not sure why so many people seem to think Your Name is that different but hey, to each their own I guess.

Exactly how I felt as well. The male character was also very weak in my eyes, he wasn't fleshed out at all except for the fact that he wanted to be an architect or something. It only vaguely tied into the plot at the point where he was looking for the town and he had made a drawing of it. Also, how many times did they have to do the "I'm touching my boobs hehe" -joke, jesus christ just leave it at one. And at the end, writing "I love you" instead of, I don't know, a name on the hand would've probably made more sense. Don't really remember the details, close to 2 years since I saw the movie.

This is my first Makoto Shinkai film I've ever seen, but I have to say: This is my new favorite movie/anime period. I dont have a long history with anime, japanese culture, etc... hell I just got done watching the original Naruto a few days ago for the first time. Call me uncultured and I'll agree with you, but this anime hit my feels harder than any death scene of any of my favorite characters in any other anime. The hand drawn art and animations are better than any other I've seen before it, and the music is just as hard hitting as the story itself even though I don't know Japanese (which is why I'm currently learning it)! Seeing the culture of these characters and Japan itself, and experiencing them going through this nail-biting, heartwarming, tear-jerking journey made me appreciate anime in a way I never have before. Absolutely amazing. I'd recommend this to anyone whether they are an anime lover or not. Also this is the first "review?" I've done like this, hopefully it's not too bad. Reply with your thoughts on "your name." if you want!

You explained this perfectly! While watching your name there was this emotion/feeling throughout my viewing that I’ve never felt from just watching a movie. Quite frankly I’m sad that I will never be able to experience that feeling again (well anytime soon at least). My mind was boggled and I was in tears afterwards. It’s really difficult to find good movies which are able to transition between two totally different moods (you’ll understand if you watch it) and that’s what I really admire about the film. If you have any spare time I suggest you go and watch it! As said in this review it sticks with you.

I actually saw this when it premiered in Tokyo, and was completely blown away... that being said, I absolutely love 'your name.' when i get done watching it... i always want to watch it again. it is 100% a masterpiece that many in Hollywood have tried to create, yet fail miserably and don't even get close. Shinkai-san has set his bar so high that it's going to be extremely difficult for him to top it himself. 'your name.' will long be a favorite of mine.

Diving into the soundtrack, "Kataware Doki" for me is the one non-vocal track that is the peak representation of the film. The strings encompass the deep nuances and the orchestral track wraps the sound together in a well-done mix. One can listen to it without knowing the film and still experience a subtle feeling of what the film and the soundtrack album conveys and expresses. Best GR video to date!

I’ve now seen this movie twice and my god, the second time through (in Japanese by the way) I cried at the ending and when both Tachibana, Taki and Miyamizu, Mitsuha go out of their way to find each other. The moment Mitsuha looks at her hand and sees that Taki wrote “I love you” oh my god I was crying, I felt that. I listened to the whole deluxe album (English versions of the songs with lyrics) from this movie and I cried only because I vividly remember what song is for which part of the movie. The theme of Mitsuha pulls on my heartstrings too. The pianist for Radwimps is just so good. He’s so good. I can just watch this movie many more times (like I did with Weathering with You lol which also gets me balling my eyes out. I guess I’m a sucker for heartfelt anime movies lol) bottom line, I love this movie so much n I can’t wait to watch it again.

you have such a soothing narrating voice! I can tell a lot of work went into this. For me, Shinkai and his 5 Cm. Per Second was one of the first anime I ever watched, and man I loved it and it made me cry. I almost had no clue what anime was at that point, but he was one of my enter-ways into this incredible medium. Many years later this comes out and I wondered, 'will this director be as good as I remember?" Thank goodness he was; this film is marvelous. It made me VERY happy to realize he was still talented and could still make me cry; I love the narratives in almost all his works. I am so glad you finally saw a Shinkai film you utterly enjoyed :D

I had never heard of Makoto Shinkai and didn't really think much of it.....Until the film started playing. Then I was 100% all-in. I still remember how the entire audience was at the edge of their seats during the film's climax and during the final scene how everyone was going Yes! No! Yes! No! YES!!!!! First of all, awesome video! As with some others here, though, I personally don't entirely agree on all your views regarding his other works. Though I do agree that a lot of his other works were like paintings in art museums that most people can only immediately see the surface (in this case, the animation). I've only watched several of Shinkai's works and I honestly find it difficult to choose the best one. I first watched your name. two years after it was released (yes, I was VERY late). But seeing how beautiful, magical, touching, suspenseful (running out of adjectives to describe it here) it was, I decided to check out his other films. And, boy, what a world I discovered. I fell in love with his works and I especially fell in love with the ideas, themes, and messages he had in those films. They're in reality but at the same time it sort of feels like they're detached from it. My personal favourites are your name. and The Garden of Words. Since the video already covers the former, I want to explain why the latter is also my favourite. Much like other works of art in other media, a lot of the elements of the movie represent concepts and ideas as well. Although I love the animation (the best I have ever seen), what struck me was the story. To truly understand the film, one needs to know what Shinkai wanted to explore with it: loneliness. SPOILER WARNING! Takao and Yukino were not socially isolated or loners, but they felt lonely nonetheless. They didn't connect with other people. The relationships they already had were just on the surface, they couldn't emotionally connect with them. They only connected with each other. He wanted to explore the concept of the original kanji for love in Japanese: 孤悲 - "lonely sadness," can also be translated as "longing for someone in solitude." This is the original meaning of "love" in Japanese, not the modern conception of romance. It shows that lonely sadness but in the modern world, and Shinkai made the movie in part to cheer people who feel lonely or socially incomplete in their lives. It treats loneliness as something that doesn't need to be fixed, something that's not wrong. People need someone to connect to, and that someone may be a few people or a lot of people. Not everyone we meet in life, everyone we work and hang out with, even our family, necessarily connects with us. But that's what a lot of people are looking for, a real connection. And above that, it's a touching love story between the two protagonists, who fall in love not through accidents or through romantic gestures, but by TALKING. In the Garden, they spoke Words which connected them. That's what I think at least! For anyone interested, I really understood the film after reading this: beneaththetangles.com/2013/06/13/kotonoha-no-niwa-lonely-sadness/. Thanks for making this video and reminding me that I need to go watch your name. yet again for the sixth time! Awesome work :)
