I think the "easiest" way to get into USNA is to enlist in the Navy as a nuclear propulsion technician. About 40%-50% of applications from the nuclear propulsion school are accepted in the USNA. First go through Navy boot camp and at the very least finish nuclear propulsion A-school. Make sure you are in the top 20% of you class. If you don't get into the USNA then your sign-on bonus is your consolation price. In 2020 it was $38k, but I heard recently it is $28k. They will pay out the first third of the bonus after you graduate from power school (follows A-school). My son applied during Power School and lost all of his bonus when he was accepted at the USNA. I guess if you wait until after Power School graduation to apply then you can at least get 1/3 of the bonus. It also depends on the USNA application window. By the way my son was interviewed by a retired Navy captain, a graduate from the USNA. I think he "failed" the interview because he did not get a recommendation from the captain. He still got in though. He was 1st in his Power School class, so maybe that helped.

I am amazed that it's only during an interview that a potential appointee discovers that he or she has a service obligation upon graduation. The same thing applies to rank. Does anyone think they graduate as a Major or Commander? I entered Annapolis way back in 1968, so things have likely changed a lot since then, but it sounds like the interview you're discussing is way early in the process, like with a school's guidance counselor. I was under the impression that the interview you were discussing is further along and the candidates' qualifications (SATs, GPA, etc.) have already placed them in a position for a nomination and hopefully an appointment.

I'm currently in the process of applying to the Naval Academy. I have just been accepted to the 2022 USNA Summer Seminar program, so that is the first step (Preliminary Application) completed. After that, you need to begin working on getting your nominations, passing the candidate fitness assessment, and the medical exam. Finally you need to complete a Blue and Gold Officer Interview. If you do all that, they will consider you for an appointment. (Edit: I am a junior in High School right now, the recommended time that you should be doing the first steps, it is required for you to get a nomination the year preceding your desired entry into the application, for most Senators and Representatives at least.)

@@wyatt3145 So my senators and representative all have information on their online website where it provides me to the nomination packets and all information I need to get an interview with them for the nomination. But there are other ways to get nominated: ROTC and JROTC instructors I believe can both nominate people for the Naval Academy (don't take that as fact as it is just a vague memory I have.

Good day sir, I just stumble upon your post since I am helping my son to be accepted at USNA next year. He just finished the 2024 summer seminar last June and he is convinced to pursue this dream. I consider him an average student and consistently getting awards from elementary to middle school , his first 2 years in high school I still consider good but his junior year in not very good since he joined the varsity wrestling team, his focus shifted to wrestling which paid of since be is the inland empire 116 lbs. champion and will be the team captain this coming senior year but he have a D in AP pre calculus, he still has an above 4.0 GPA and is in JROTC with a rank of 1st. lt. and commander of drill team and about to become a squadron commander his senior year . he is also the lead altar server in our church that trains incoming altar servers. can I ask your help , any advice and motivation to have a better chance of being accepted is very much appreciated. I know it’s very competitive and he has other options too as ROTC and pilot school. What is your advice for young kids to pursue dreams of entering the Academy. Thank you

Start him on his path NOW, make sure he does a sport that he likes and sticks with it, make sure he chooses a place to volenteer that he likes, make sure he gets to do leadership stuff asb, camp counselor, any of that. Overland make sure he has all three areas, voulenteering, academics, and athletics. Make sure to help him and make sure to let him choose what he does

Hey sir, thank you very much for this video. I have a 12-year-old son in seventh grade. Do you have any tips or advice that I can share or implement with my son from now to eighth and ninth grade that would help his chances of getting into the naval Academy, for starters, he is joining the Sea cadet program in our area. I personally would tell him to focus on his studies in school, participate in various sports and clubs, try to get leadership in these activities. And pursue service work whether it's volunteer ems or some other form of community service. He has a lot of time to prep for the usna

Pre med isn't a degree, but they do have medicorps after commisioning. Usually, you will get a chemistry degree this way.

I read a book, "Off The Planet", by NASA astronaut Jerry Linenger. He went to Annapolis, and his first-year grades were so good that he went into a special program that put him into medical school, when he graduated from USNA. After getting his MD, he later became an astronaut, doing a tour aboard the ISS.

I think some of this is a little inaccurate (from a cadet at USAFA). 1. Why should a high school student know what they want to study? USAFA has all types of awesome programs in place for students to explore many different fields of study and ask questions. There’s no reason to know in high school what a kid wants to do for their major. The part about them knowing that majors the academy offers is fair. 2. You are incorrect in saying that USAFA does not have premed. Additionally, there are more spots than just 3, and you don’t need to be top 3 to get them.

Thank you for your input. The point of the med school comment is that a very limited number of grads get the opportunity to go to the med corps and there are "easier" ways of becoming a doctor. I disagree with you completely about having an idea about knowing what course of study to pursue. If you're focused enough to pursue a Service Academy education, you should have some idea what you want to major in. I sincerely thank your input and if you're interested in doing a joint video to give your perspective that would be great.
