Yeah, fellow metalhead here. Literally only one of my top five Wrapped artists was a metal band: Avenged Sevenfold. And even ignoring the whole "oh they aren't metal" crowd, their new record was more of a Prog album if anything. So I basically had no metal artists in mine. Which was super weird, considering I literally have a channel about metal music, and 90% of my taste is metal or metal adjacent (i.e: Grunge, harder Classic Rock, etc.) but my wrapped was... not that. It's interesting though, I felt that same vibe, that people just want to be a stereotype. I think I deliberately forced myself to listen to other genres this year to escape that stereotyping. Exactly! My liked stylist ranges from classical, to goth, weirdcore Lemon Demon-esque, to meme remixes and a sprinkle of pop, game soundtracks, etc. Some of my friends get musical whiplash but the most of us do the same thing. My Wrapped actually did suck, but for an actual reason: I listened to one game's OST on repeat for a week or two after finishing it, then just added some of the tracks to my Liked. But that period of repeating skewed my Wrapped to hell and back, so much that my Top 4 of the Top 5 songs were just from that OST! Not the end of the world, most of the people I would share it to know what I listen to, but still silly.

Another reason why wrapped sucks is that spotify recommendations suck nowadays. I listen a lot to daily mixes, and they were great like 5 years ago, good variety, a lot good bands that i haven't heard before. Now it's just the same 10 songs in different order. 4 out of 6 of my daily mixes are exactly the same now (black metal + some melodic death metal, same bands in all playlists). That's the problem with Spotify.

The only thing that pissed me off about wrapped this year was that they had POV: Indie as a top genre for so many people. It's not a genre. The term indie originated from whether or not musicians and bands were signed to large labels and record companies, rather than being a type of music. Because of this logic, of course people are going to have indie as a "top genre", because of the sheer amount of musicians and groups that have build themselves up rather than being bought out or advertised by a large company.

I actually quite like my wrapped this year. My top genres were progressive and alternative metal, but my top artists were this Finnish rapper who came in second in Eurovision this year and Maneskin. I don't care if people don't care for them, because I love their music, which is why I listened to it that much. I do admit that I've had other years, where I would listen to some songs I'm indifferent to just because they came on, so it was annoying seeing those in my wrapped, but this year I think I listened to more music I actually liked, which is why I'm rather content. Also I hate the people saying "Nobody cares about your spotify wrapped". I CARE! I ask all my friends to share their stats with me. It's so fun to compare and seeing that me and all my friends are something like the top 0,5% of listeners of our top artists is so fun! (Top 0,1% of Kaarija listeners here lol).

I got Spotify only because KZbin playlists started glitching and too many times and started playing totally random videos outside the playlist. And after I got Spotify over 90% time I have listened various podcasts. 😅 And also with Spotify it is that when a playlist ends it may start playing something crap. Most frustrating thing is that you can't block podcasts in Spotify so if you have found a podcast that you don't like or a podcast that you have already listened completely you can't prevent Spotify to play them again.

So, given your script here, I kinda expect you to broaden the styles you cover. You are absolutely right, music is super diverse, and I'd argue there is music to find that can be appealing to you in pretty much any genre. E.g. Baroque, Classical, Acid(core), Grime, (psy/hard)trance, jungle, EBM, industrial, hiphop, RBB, rap, glitchhop, shranz, (imo) pre-2006-2008 hardstyle, pop that's at least 10-20 years old as to filter the gems from the crap (tho neoliberalism might've ruined pop now, particularly as the social media age kicked off, with it's massive data-collecting on individual consumer behaviour). Etc.

People's preoccupation about their music listening doesn't just come down to concerns about being a bad judge of the 'objective' parts of quality but the perceived implications of their subjective judgments on their personality and the implications of their tastes on their scene/cultural affiliations. E.g., if you listened mainly to top-40 charting artists, you may worry that you'll be perceived as basic, that people may assume you don't expose yourself to many experiences, etc. - that you're uninteresting. If you listened to mostly black metal, that would demonstrate strong affiliation to that scene and give the impression that you can be assumed to somewhat fit the (largely unwelcoming) cultural stereotypes of that scene, furthering your credibility within it but alienating you from everyone outside it. These assumptions usually aren't fair, but because (especially for more specific tastes) the associations often bear out to some degree, it's hard to stop yourself from making them altogether, which is why it's hard not to worry about others making them as well.

By day, I listen mostly to metal and hardcore punk like Hatebreed, Slaughter To Prevail, Knocked Loose, Will Haven (extremely underrated band all hardcore fans should check out), Sunami, DRAIN, Pain Of Truth, Mindforce, Infant Annihilator, and etc...but then i go to bed and sleep every night while Gospel bluegrass plays for six-eight hours straight at low volume on my Echo Dot on the headboard of my bed. My ex girlfriend that I have known and been friends with for over 20 years started one of those shared Spotify playlists with me. When she did, I started laughing and said "okay! be prepared to worship Satan and find Jesus simultaneously." 😂 Love you channel! been a fan for a good number of months.
